I was asked to write this book by Sam Jackson, Managing Editor of Classic FM. When I pointed out to him that there were already very many biographies of Mozart in existence, he said he believed that a new account of the great composer’s life, written in an accessible and readable style, would appeal to Classic FM’s five and a half million listeners. I hope the result meets his expectations.

As with my Beethoven and Strauss biographies, it was a joy to work with Elliott & Thompson, Classic FM’s publisher. Lorne Forsyth, Chairman, and his team have become friends. Olivia Bays, Director, was once again my editor. I was about halfway into the book, when the decision was made to bring publication forward by a whole year to meet the 225th anniversary of Mozart’s death in December 2016. This made huge demands on all aspects of production and resulted in a period of intensive writing, with the manuscript being completed in a matter of weeks. I am thus more than ever grateful to Olivia, as well as Pippa Crane and Jill Burrows, for spotting many repetitions and inconsistencies, as well as highlighting passages that needed clarification or expansion. The book is immeasurably better for their careful work. Pippa also sourced the illustrations, while designer James Collins worked at great speed to prepare the book for publication, and cover designer Tash Weber created a beautiful jacket. My thanks to them, and to the entire team at Elliott & Thompson.

Classic FM is the UK’s only 100 per cent classical music radio station, and the largest classical station in the world. Since it began broadcasting in September 1992, it has brought classical music to many millions of people. If you’ve yet to discover for yourself the delights of being able to listen to classical music twenty-four hours a day, you can find Classic FM on 101–102 FM, on Digital Radio, online at ClassicFM.com, on Sky channel 0106, on Virgin Media channel 922, on Freeview channel 731 and on FreeSat channel 721. You can also download the free Classic FM app, which will enable you to listen to Classic FM on your iPhone, iPod, iPad, Blackberry or Android device.

John Suchet hosts Classic FM’s flagship weekday morning show, regularly broadcasting to just under three million people every week. Other members of the Classic FM family include Bill Turnbull, Myleene Klass, Alan Titchmarsh, Charlotte Green, Aled Jones, Alexander Armstrong and Margherita Taylor. ClassicFM.com, meanwhile, is the world’s most popular classical music website, and offers a wealth of information about the works of the great composers.

Classic FM has a long history of working to develop the next generation of classical music lovers, supporting organisations such as Music for Youth, which runs the annual Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts, which has worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra to deliver an annual orchestral music education project to thousands of children across the UK, thanks to funding from the radio station’s charity appeal.

Classic FM is owned by Global, the company behind the UK’s three biggest commercial radio brands, Heart, Capital and Smooth, and the country’s leading commercial talk station, LBC. Together Global’s brands reach 30 million people across the UK every week. Global also houses an entertainment division with expertise across talent management, publishing and live touring and festivals.
