She clasped his outstretched hand and they strolled behind Colt who waved and chatted to everyone they passed. The good folks of Aurora continued to go out of their way to give a warm welcome to Sheriff Boone and the schoolmarm.

Beau Blackwell had tried to make a stink over it, and had gotten an earful, with everyone from the barber to the small nesters making sure he knew they didn’t take kindly to Buck and Sally Goodman almost getting hanged. Since then the owner of the Double B Ranch had kept to Cheyenne, undoubtedly planning his next move with help of his fellow cattle barons.

Maggie lifted her face to the yellow petals of the sun. “I love summer.”

Boone’s hand tightened around hers. “The winters can be long.”

The magnificent fury of Boone entering her life, then losing him, then learning he was alive had armed her for the worst Wyoming could throw her way. She pictured the snow piled outside and her and Colt and Boone snuggled up together on the couch, reading stories from her small library. “I’m sure we’ll find a way to keep warm.”

His mouth brushed her ear. “Margaret Haven, you keep talking like that and you’ll have me wishing for a passel of blizzards.”

“Mama, Daddy, watch me,” Colt called, as Wyatt coaxed Snowball into a slow trot. Jack barked in excitement.

She and Boone waved, and shared smiles of joy and pride.

Her life in St. Louis seemed a distant memory. “After searching and searching for happiness, I feel like I’ve finally reached home.”

Boone kissed her hand. “You and Colt are my home.”

A lovely fizz tingled through her. “We were crazy for each other upon first sight.”

His smile was magnificent. “Jack liked you. That settled it for me.”

“And I knew a man who loved his dog couldn’t be all bad.”

Laughs mingling, they shared a kiss.

Hope had won out over fear. The future beckoned like an endless prairie alive with buzzing bees and waving flowers. A life brimming with trust, goodness, and love awaited the gunslinger and his lady bounty hunter.
