FiveFan stays anonymous because he wants to. He is clever. He’s a talented artist. Beyond creative. And self-taught in Photoshop. I’ve never known anyone so exceedingly humble. He’s also very generous. He’ll willingly make a custom Photoshop for me if I get a wild idea. For example, one year I had an idea of giving out nice bottles of wine for Christmas, and I asked if he could make a label of Jasper as James Bond. About thirty-five minutes later, he sent a finished product.
“Something like this?” he asked.
Peter and I were amazed.
“How does he do that?”
I asked him how it all started, and he said it was in 2012, on the final night of the Republican National Convention. A big “mystery speaker” was set to talk, and on The Five, we kicked it around the table, wondering who it should be.
“When it came to Dana, she said the Republican who would really bring down the house was… Jasper! Greg groaned, and he asked how she knew he was a Republican. “I told him so.”
That’s when FiveFan said the image of Jasper speaking onstage at the RNC immediately started forming in his mind, so he opened Photoshop and started putting it together. He placed Jasper behind the lectern, changed the signs in the crowd to read “Jasper!” switched out the Teleprompters for tennis balls, and added Greg protesting that he should have been the speaker.
“It was a lot of fun to make,” he said.
The quality of FiveFan’s work is impressive, even to experts of the software program. I asked him how he became so proficient.
“I had been using Photoshop for about ten years, doing graphic design and making websites. I never had any formal training, just learned how to use it over time,” he said. He added that there’s always something more to learn and to improve. Isn’t that true for all of us?
So how did he become FiveFanPhotoshop?
“You can tell I didn’t put too much thought into my Twitter name: ‘Hmm, I’m a fan of this show called The Five, and I’ll probably be doing some Photoshops…’” So he’s logical, too. “From there I kept up doing Photoshops revolving around things said on The Five, or my other favorite show, Red Eye, with plenty of Jasper adventures thrown in the mix. It was fun to interact with the shows that way, and I was amazed when Dana started showing some of my little Photoshops as her One More Thing feature on the show.”
When I decided to do this book, I wanted to do something more than just write my story. I wanted to show it. I wanted to make people chuckle and get a real kick out of these pictures. FiveFan agreed to partner with me, and this book is a product of our friendship. I’m honored to know him. Readers and Jasper fans, the real treat of this book follows. Featured here is the talented work of @FiveFanPhotoshops: pictures that will make you smile, even laugh out loud. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Melanie Dunea did the cover shot for both of my books. I’m sure you can guess why we keep calling her back.
Friends deserving of special mention are Tim and Michelle Chase and their boys, Ryan, Benjamin, and William. They love Jasper like a brother. Nicolle and Mark Wallace are Vizsla enthusiasts who give us a chance to visit their home, where Jasper runs wild with Lilly and Honey (Lilly was Henry’s first love during the White House days). Megyn Kelly and Doug Brunt share their considerable talents and care for their friends in special ways. Ingrid Henrichsen, my “sister-friend,” and Ward Marsh have known Jasper since he was a puppy and were there for his disastrous first swim, yet they keep inviting us back! Jeff and Tracy Schyberg and their daughter, Macy English, bring us so much joy. Grady is their Brittany Spaniel, and we met when our dogs pulled toward each other at a crab cake social in South Carolina. Grady and Jasper are a unit we call “Grasper.”
