Recover Me

“I own a mine?” Though she had no reason not to believe Bishop spoke the truth, disbelief tinged the question.

  “Yes. Well, you and Chris.”

“Wow. What do you think we should do about it?” The brief excitement she’d felt blossomed into hope and displaced any doubts to his research’s validity.

“Eventually you need to figure out if you want to have it checked to see if there’s any gold in there. But right now, I just want to hold you.”

She curled happily against his side, putting thoughts about the past, mines, and gold out of her head and concentrating, finally, on the present. “You can hold me forever.”

“Hopefully, I can do just that.”

  Epilogue

Summer had finally lost its grip on the Nevada desert and Evie shivered a little as a cold breeze blew. It had been four months since she’d last been in front of the Recovery mine. Four months of being interrogated, of worrying what would happen to Bishop if the Feds decided they wanted to prosecute him as well. When they’d come back with the offer of dropping all charges as long as he testified against his former boss, Bishop reluctantly agreed. She knew he didn’t like being labeled a snitch, but he also didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in jail.

It would be a long, drawn-out road for him, but she vowed to stand by his side and take every step together. For now, however, they were focused on what lay inside the mine.

“No matter what is in here, this is officially the coolest thing ever,” Chris said with a broad smile. He rubbed his hands together and took off to the entrance as the men began to get ready to open the Recovery.

The bolts of the door were snapped off before a crowbar helped break away the thick wood that had covered the entrance for over a hundred years. As the dark interior was revealed, the stale air from inside rushed out, the musty faint smell of rot causing her to wrinkle her nose.

One miner entered the tunnel, using a high-powered flashlight and carrying a pick axe, disappearing almost immediately into the inky blackness. She couldn’t help but reach down and grip Bishop’s hand. She had no idea what they’d find, if they’d find anything at all, but the anticipation had her heart thumping wildly.

Seconds turned to minutes and by the time the miner returned, she was ready to bite all her fingernails down to the quick. The man conferred with his partners for a moment before they all walked toward her and Bishop, Chris following behind them. The miner didn’t say anything as he held up his hand. Evie blinked, not sure if she was hallucinating.

“Holy shit,” Chris said, eyes wide.

The gold nugget almost filled the man’s palm.

“The vein that’s in there is one of the largest I’ve seen,” he told her.

She wanted to faint. She took the nugget, admiring how heavy it weighed, and held it up to the sunlight. The dull golden color seemed to pulse with an internal flame.

“You want to become a miner?” Bishop asked her.

“You bet your sweet ass!” Chris exclaimed.

Evie ignored him. Her gaze locked with Bishop’s. “Only if you’re my partner.”

  “Forever,” he murmured.

Chris whooped as Bishop lowered his head and kissed her, sealing their love and their future.
