About the Author
Kata Čuić grew up in the northern part of Appalachia that most people (even its own residents) would not consider Appalachian at all. (She’s looking at you, Mom.) Her dialect is a curious combination of Ohio Valley, Pittsburghese, Oklahoma City, and northern Appalachian.
The only reason she knows this is because she has a degree in Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh. She still lives in the ‘burbs of the ‘Burgh with her husband and three insolent teens, who believe she is old enough to have experienced outdoor plumbing and dirt floors in her childhood home.
They’re not entirely wrong. Her great-grandparents’ farm actually did have an outhouse. Sometimes, she visited there. She happily reports she held it the entire duration of said visits. Standards, y’all.
