“Until next time, when you are hard enough” Dan chuckles before blurring away and I frown, I should go after him.
“Just leave it, he will be back and you can sort it then” Jake places his hand on my shoulder.
“He wanted a fight so why did he run off?” I mutter.
“He is trying to scare you” Maddie smiles and I sigh.
“Let’s get out of here before I go chasing after shadows” I rub my weary eyes.
Chapter Twenty-One
I growl again for the fourth time, the wolf within me demanding we stop the van and go after my brother.
I shake my head and glance out of the window. I frown as shadows follow us. I let the vampires side of me take over and I gasp as I feel vampire presence all around us.
“We are surrounded” I yelp out, Jake jerks the van to a stop and I jump out. The other vans stop just in time otherwise they would pile up into a crash.
“Maybe next time give the others some warning you are stopping” I raise my eyebrows at Jake.
“Keeps em on their toes” He chuckles before shifting.
I let the wolf and vampire become one, I shift into my monster form and chuckle at the name I have given it.
Reece does the same and we wait for the vampires to show themselves.
“I think Gath is trying to get rid of us, we are the ones who could change which way the war goes” Reece grumbles.
“You might be right” I nod.
I hiss as two vampires step out of the shadows. My senses tell me others lurk in waiting and I tense. I don’t want my new pack getting hurt.
“Give up now and we will come to some arrangements” One of them sneers and I shake my head.
The vampire sighs before flicking his wrist. The others jump from the shadows and I gulp, we have no chance.
I see all the wolves have shifted and I hold my hand up, they wait for my signal but I don’t plan on giving them one.
I launch myself at the leader who meets me, I slice his shoulders with my claws and he gives his army a signal. I hear my pack barking and I sigh before giving them a signal.
I snap and snarl at the leader, we clash together in a vicious fight to the death. I manage to snap his neck and he howls in pain, I grip his throat in my claws and clench, the leader drops the floor and I turn to help the others.
“Jax!” My heart leaps into my throat as Maddie’s scream echoes through my head. Her howls echoing through the night and my mind slows as I turn to see her body falling to the floor.
I see red as Jake protects her. The beast takes over and I bellows as fury takes hold of me. I hear someone trying to get my attention but all I can focus on is killing these people who hurt everyone I care about.
I slash, duck, claw and bite my way through bodies. The red tint in my eyes unwilling to go away.
Vampires fall faster than I can keep up as I unleash my emotions on them.
“They are dead!” I hear Reece shout.
I turn in a circle as the anger and fear fade, I gasp at the carnage. A member of my pack wearily comes towards me and I sigh. Pain explodes all over my body as the adrenaline fades.
I collapse to the floor and I feel someone pick me up and place me on the back seats of the van.
“Maddie” I mutter.
“She’s going to be fine,” Reece says as he slips into the seat next to me.
“You need blood” Reece mutters and I hiss as I smell his blood.
“No, I can’t be like them” I growl, trying to stop the vampire within me from taking what Reece is offering.
He rolls his eyes and shoves his arm in my face, I groan as the vampire wins and I sink my fangs into his arm.
I sigh as the warm liquid fills my mouth and trickles down my throat.
I pull away just before the vampire tells me to, not wanting Reece to be knocked out from blood loss.
“See? Feeling better?” He chuckles as I gingerly sit up.
“Yeah” I grin.
I sigh as my eyes close, I frown as Maddie’s body falls in my mind again and again.
“She will be fine” I hear Reece repeat and I nod.
“Get some sleep, Percy is already back home” I hear Jake say and I huff in answer, not even having the strength to reply with words.
The steady hum of the van rocks me to sleep with thoughts of a better world to live in.
Chapter Twenty-Two
I groan as I feel someone picking me up. I try to open my eyes however they will not obey.
“You are fine, just relax” I hear Percy mutter in my ear and I let myself be carried to god knows where.
I feel myself being placed on a bed and I sigh as the dream world tries to claim me again.
A tickle of hair makes me sneeze and I force my eyes open to see Maddie smiling at me, her pale face the only indication that she nearly died.
“I love you” I smile and she kisses me gently.
“Love you too mate” I see her eyes glowing and I know her wolf is in control.
“Mine” I simply reply.
“Mate” Her wolf replies and I pull her close to me.
We lay entwined together for hours, just enjoying the fact we are both still alive. Percy checks on us every hour and I roll my eyes every time he comes in.
“Don’t want you dying on us” He chuckles as he leaves for the fifth time.
I sigh and shuffle from under Maddie, she mumbles in her sleep and I smile. I carefully walk to the door and throw it open before shutting it behind me.
Percy looks up from what he is doing and I smile at him.
“We have seven vampires closing in around this place, you able to fight?” He says and I nod at him.
“I have no choice, we fight and win or fight and die” I shrug.
“Let’s do this” Percy sighs and I follow him outside. Rain thunders down to the ground, making the grass soaked.
A flash of lightning makes me yelp and Nat gives me a scared smile.
“Storms are worse for our kind,” She says and cringes as thunder rumbles.
I sense the vampires nearby and I tense, I see Reece doing the same and I grin at him. The thrill of a fight making the wolf want to shift.
My pack come to stand behind me and I nod to the wolves, half in human form and the other as wolves.
“To win or die!” I yell as the vampires come at us.
The wolves howl as the humans yell, I roar as my body shifts into my monster form.
The first vampire falls easily by my hand. I look up to see more coming out of the woods.
“Go!” I yell to the wolves who jump ahead to take them down.
I bite down on a vampire's neck and he hisses while stabbing my side. I growl at the pain but ignore it as I dispatch him.
The rain starts to let up and I rush to the aid of my pack mates, vampires attack in hordes and I shiver as they mercilessly take out my wolves.
“That one!” I hear a vampire hiss and I turn to see the vampire pointing at Jake who grapples with three vampires.
I see one of the vampires raise a bat and hit Jake over the head. I snarl and charge, using my vampire speed to get to them.
I see Jakes eyes grow dim as his body falls to the floor. I howl and wolves join my flanks, together we take down the vampires.
I grunt as a bullet hits my back, shock waves race along my body and I collapse to the ground as they get stronger.
“Take that one and leave the rest” I hear Dan’s voice above me.
“You lose brother” He snarls before my world goes dark.
*************
“Jax?” I hear through the fog in my mind. I groan as my eyes open, pain makes me want to curl up and stay asleep however I remember the fight.
“Jake” I yell as I bolt up.
“They took him” My eyes focus on Nat whose tears fall freely.
“We will get him back I promise” I growl as I get up form the bed.
I hold my side as I pull the door open. Percy scowls at me a
nd rushes to help me.
“I’m fine” I shake off his help.
I slump down in a chair and place my head in my hands, I couldn’t protect him. I recall the memory over and over, the way he fell to the ground before I could get there and the way Dan had taken me down before I could get to him.
“We are trying to track him but I can’t find him,” Percy says and I nod.
“I’m so sorry” I mutter as Reece sits next to me.
“It’s not your fault, you nearly died trying to get to him” Reece replies.
“We have to find him” I narrow my eyes.
“And we will” Percy nods, I see the un-shed tears glistening in his eyes and I wonder just how hard it is for him. He has known Jake since he was very young. Maddie hands me a plate and I pick at the food on it. I sigh and place it on the table, I’m not eating when we need to be finding Jake.
I get up and slowly pace the floor, I feel Percy watching me but I ignore him.
“How many did we lose?” I ask no one.
“From your pack, you lost five wolves, from Percy's we lost ten wolves and from mum’s pack we lost seven wolves” Nat replies and I squeeze my eyes shut, so much death for no reason.
“How many vampires are dead?” I ask.
“Twenty” Reece replies.
“This time we hit hard and fast, I don't care about mercy. The vampires don't deserve it” I growl before going outside.
I sit down on the grass and tilt my head towards the sun, it warms my face and I sigh.
“We will end this soon” Maddie snarls.
“Yes, we will” I reply, vengeance clear in my mind.
