He’d expected to return to a dark room, the others preparing for bed. The fact that Cassidy was willing and eager made his dick instantly tent in the track pants he’d found in public donation box down the street. It was more than sex driving him. He had yet to mark his woman, to taste her, join with her on the deepest level. It was all finally happening, and his number was up.
Without thought, he brushed Travis aside and joined the ménage à trois on the bed. Garret and Patrick had her stuffed with cock, leaving only her pretty little mouth untouched. He’d experienced her lips around him on numerous occasions, and it was always something to remember.
Tonight she was greedy, willingly opening her mouth and swallowing half his dick within seconds. His eyes rolled back in his head, and he let out a satisfied groan. The little human could work magic with her tongue. She suckled and licked as her body was jostled between the two males pumping their bodies against her. Her eyes were closed. She was the essence of sexuality, her scent raw lust. The passion in the room was overwhelming. The pheromones and the sound of flesh on flesh aroused Matthew’s wolf.
His fangs lengthened. There was nothing standing in his way. Even Garret wouldn’t be able to dispute his actions now. He was the only one besides Evan left to mark Cassidy for the pack. It had to be done, like the signing of a contract in blood.
Garret began to fuck her harder, his hand tightening in her hair. She released Matthew’s cock, moaning as his alpha gave his final thrusts. He hadn’t pulled away from her body for a minute when Matthew took his place, immediately penetrating her slick pussy with his dick. He slid right in, her body already filled with hot cum. It was heaven to be inside her, her hot cunt hugging his erection.
“I’ve missed you, baby,” he whispered against her neck. He could hear her blood rushing in her veins, calling to him like a siren’s song.
Patrick’s pace increased. He wouldn’t last much longer. Truthfully, Matthew couldn’t wait to get Cassidy to himself. Although he loved sharing her with his pack mates, the first love bite was special, something uniquely sensual.
“I need you, Matthew. I need your bite.”
She sounded desperate, a woman on the verge of orgasm and unable to attain it. He knew full well that Cassidy had no trouble meeting her peak, so she had to be craving the bite itself. It excited him that she had no fear, no reservations. Accepting his wolfen side was the ultimate act of love, in his opinion.
“You’ll have it.” He kissed her lips as Patrick rolled away, settling on his back next to them. “You understand there’s no turning back?”
“I wasn’t really living until I moved to Climax. I’ve found my place.”
He smiled, smoothing his palm along the side of her head, looking as deep into her eyes as he could manage. Mine. Matthew had flashbacks of his captivity but pushed them away. Cassidy was like fresh snow, covering old hurts with her sweet innocence. This was their moment.
“It’ll hurt for a minute,” he said as he painted a trail along her neck with his fingertip.
She shook her head, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. “No. It won’t.”
Matthew ran his tongue over his teeth, his fangs ready with needle-sharp tips. He lowered his head, kissing the point of contact on her lower neck. She smelled sweet and delicious, the ultimate temptation. When he poised his mouth over her pale skin, she tilted her neck to give him better access. His cock swelled inside her.
He bit down, the instant rush of blood shocking him with its potency. The bonding was instantaneous, filling him with warmth, love, and intense protectiveness. He kept his fangs locked in place longer than necessary, not willing to break the connection just yet. Matthew began to fuck her, keeping her pinned with his fangs. She mewled and arched her back to meet his thrusts.
Now she’s mine. When he finally retracted his fangs, he felt like howling to the moon in celebration. But he was a human in the city, not enjoying the chill against his fur as he raced through the pine trees. As their bodies continued to stay locked together in the act of lovemaking, he pondered the future. Was the city the best place for a human girl? Were all the dangers in Climax worth the risk? As much as he wanted to return home, he had to consider the needs of his mate. She had to come first.
His balls pulled up tight and his cock swelled just before the beautiful moment of release. The lights seemed to dim, sounds became magnified, and a rush of heat and energy surged to his groin. Blood and sex—such a wicked combination. Her pussy clamped down around his cock. So tight. He thrust into her a few final times, exhaustion immediately pulling at him. His woman was sated and he had finally cemented their bond.
Chapter Nine
“Garret wouldn’t approve of this,” said Travis.
“I don’t care. I refuse to stay cooped up in that hotel room another minute.”
She walked along the sidewalk the next evening, the streetlights shimmering off the black asphalt of the roadway. One day felt like ten years when she had so many unanswered questions. Was Evan okay? Was the new Scott really her brother? Would Corbin and Peter ever leave her alone? And was it only a matter of time until she spontaneously turned into a wolf herself?
Cassidy had no regrets regarding her decision to initially leave the city. She’d only had a small apartment and dead-end job. It held memories of loneliness and little more. She had continually sought meaning in the concrete jungle and never found it. In the last couple years she’d put all her focus on finding her half brother, convinced her life would have somewhat more substance if she found some roots. But she’d failed to find him over and over again. If Scott was really the shifter she’d met in Climax, he was probably long gone, assuming she wanted no part of him. She wondered if he’d shown up in the morning at the mine. Or was he yet another crazed shifter trying to mate with her?
Even though the hour was late, the streets were alive with evening shoppers and shift workers returning home. It seemed every female in a ten-mile radius, young and old, had their sights set on her cowboy. What else could she expect? He brought no clothes with him to the city. He wore a borrowed pair of jogging pants low on his hips and no shirt. The man wasn’t an ordinary male specimen by anyone’s standards. He was a fantasy on two legs, his upper body molded from any woman’s idea of perfection. It made her feel proud knowing he was hers and that his mark was permanently displayed on her body. She also felt safe, even at the late hour. Her men were like no others.
“You couldn’t have found a shirt along with those pants?” she asked, cocking one brow.
He looked at her sideways. “You’re jealous? I’m ready to rip out the throat of the next male that looks at you.”
She giggled. “Nobody’s looking at me, Travis.”
“A man knows these things. And I don’t like it. I want to return to Climax before I harm one of these city boys.”
None of her men were crazy about humans. She couldn’t blame them for the injustices they’d had to live through. It was important for her to prove not all humans were created equal.
Cassidy held Travis’s arm, leaning against him as they walked. It was nice to stroll the streets together as a couple, showing off her man to people rather than just wildlife. Climax was another world, and being in public with her men made their relationship feel somehow more real.
“When are we going home?” she asked. And Climax was home. For the first time in her life, she knew where she belonged. As crazy as her life could get in the far north, it was branded on her soul no less than her miners. She had to go back.
“That’s Garret’s call.”
“What do you say?”
“I can’t say I like the city, but I also don’t want Corbin pulling another dangerous stunt. We nearly lost the forest. Nearly lost you.”
She sighed. “I only need Evan’s mark and then everyone will leave us alone, right?”
“That’s what they say.”
There was a chill in the air. Travis wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close to his body. Even
with the lower temperature, his bare skin was still warm, almost hot. It was soothing. He steered them around, heading back the way they came.
“Do you think he’s okay?”
“Can’t say. It’s times like these I wish Garret would upgrade to the twenty-first century. A cell phone would come in handy about now.”
“We should have left a note…something.”
“No sense worrying yourself sick for nothing,” he said before kissing her atop the head. “It’ll all happen the way it’s meant to.”
She didn’t want an outcome that didn’t include all five men. Just the thought made her feel hollow inside.
“Please convince Garret. We’ll go home, find Evan, and live happily ever after.”
Travis chuckled loudly, not caring who heard. People made a wide arch around them as they passed.
“What?” she demanded, not finding the humor.
“You believe in fairy tales now, darlin’?”
“I believe in love.” Then she scowled. “If werewolves are real, then I say anything is possible.”

That evening, Travis approached him in private around the side of the hotel. Garret felt the need to patrol the area just as he always did at home. Sitting around idly was driving him mad.
He knew what his pack mate was feeling even before he spoke. It was part of his gift as alpha. Travis was irrevocably in love, and worry plagued his thoughts.
“If you have something to say, come out with it.”
“You already know. Cassidy wants to go home,” said Travis.
“And I suspect you agree with her?”
Travis leaned against the brick building, arms crossed, briefly looking up into a sky void of stars. “Then tell me, boss, what’s the plan? Are we going to hide out in this shithole forever? Rockford isn’t going anywhere, so hiding doesn’t make sense. Whether we go home today or in a year, he’ll still be waiting for her.”
If anyone wanted to go home, it was Garret. He felt his land in Climax was the best place for him to watch over his woman. He knew every rock, stump, and hideaway. His remote cabin had long been his private sanctuary. But lately he hadn’t been successful at keeping enemies off his property. His No Trespassing signs may as well have said Welcome. Cassie’s pull was too strong. It was frustrating and dangerous dealing with other shifters, a combination that could lead to a pack war.
All his friends wanted to return home. They couldn’t run scared forever. And like Patrick said, one day or a year, it wouldn’t make a difference to Corbin Rockford. If only Garret had the luxury of living off the grid in Climax. But he had a mine to run and employees who counted on him for their paychecks. He’d have to find balance if they returned home.
“Fine. We’ll return to the mine, but we keep a constant watch on Cassidy. I don’t want her alone for a minute.”
It wasn’t much of a way to live, always watching over their shoulders, but it was worth the sacrifice to keep Cassie safe. Hopefully once Evan marked her, the drama would be left behind. He craved his simple life, overseeing Gregor mining, and running through the woods under the light of the moon. Garret already missed the nightly display of countless stars and northern lights. It was unnatural for a wolf to live in the city.
“There’re four of us. We’ll manage. We always do.”
It seemed Travis and the others were purposely not mentioning Evan, the fifth member of their pack. Had they already given him up for dead? Garret had just gotten over the near loss of Matthew. His heart wouldn’t survive another tragedy. He had to believe his right-hand man was back home waiting for their return. If he was closer, he may be able to feel his presence, giving him a sense of reassurance. But they were a world away from their old-growth forest in the north. Garret had called the office at the mine from a gas station, hoping his pack mate would answer—no such luck. With no other way to contact Evan, Garret had to hold on to the hope that all was well.
They arrived at the hotel suite, the florescent lights flickering after the door closed behind them. The dive was no place for his mate. Although he couldn’t provide every human luxury, at the very least he wanted her surrounded by majestic oaks and rich evergreens.
Cassidy was lounging on the bed playing cards with Matthew and Patrick. She turned to look at him when he entered the room.
“You want to go home, little one?”
She immediately sat up straight in the bed, her legs crossed. Her eyes carried the excitement of a young child. “Of course.”
“You know the risks. Climax isn’t for the faint of heart.”
She nodded.
“Leave us,” he said. The other three men left the suite without protest. The door closing behind them signaled they were alone.
He walked around the bed and back, wondering what to think, to feel, to say. Should he apologize for failing as her mate and protector? He felt the shame of being a substandard alpha. First he failed Matthew, now Evan. He couldn’t even keep fucking shifters off his woman. This was not how he planned his future.
“When you first came to Climax, you were my little toy. You piqued my interest, and I wasn’t sure what to think about you. But each day you wore down the walls guarding my heart. Now it’s bare and defenseless.” He sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand in his. “If I lose you to another male, I won’t just lose the only woman I’ve ever loved. I’ll lose myself. You’ve filtered so deep inside me, I won’t be able to function without you.”
She offered a gentle smile. “I’m not going anywhere, Garret. They can try to take me from you, but they can never inspire me to love them or stay loyal. I know where I belong.”
“You may just have a higher calling than a bunch of low-class miners.”
She shook her head, a scowl marring her pretty features. “You’re everything to me. All five of you are perfectly imperfect and I wouldn’t change a single thing—fur and all.”
He dropped down on the bed beside her, pulling her close. Garret needed to feel her, smell her, and hear the beat of her heart. She was his fuel, his purpose, and also his weakness. He nipped her side playfully.
Cassie squealed and slapped him on the shoulder. “If you start something, be prepared to finish it.”
“Not tonight, sweetheart. But I promise to make things right for you and my pack. And when I do, you’ll know what it feels like to have five men claim you at once.”
The mere thought of marking her again during sex was enough to make his fangs prick his gums. But he maintained his strict control. He still hadn’t figured out the significance of Cassie’s blood. Was he wrong when he tasted wolf? Three of his pack mates only tasted human, and that was exactly what she claimed to be. If she was unique and special in design, why would the gods bring her to him? He didn’t deserve such a treasure.
“When do we leave?”
“We leave tonight.”

While Cassidy felt more confident in the light of day, her wolf-shifting men preferred the cover of night. So, rather than wait for morning to make the long trek back to Climax, they started out immediately, only the light of the moon keeping them company on their long journey.
One hour rolled into the next. The truck jolted and jostled along the rough roads once they exited the last stretch of northern highway. They were so close to home. Any minute and they’d pass the sign welcoming them into Climax. It had been months since she’d first seen that ominous sign. She’d left everything behind in search of a better life and a link to her past.
Now she was in no better shape. Although she’d found love, something far greater than she could have ever imagined, her life was still in flux. Finding a better life was only half the battle. Maintaining it wasn’t so easy. Everyone wanted to steal a piece of her happiness, and the mystery behind her half brother had been complicated by Corbin and Peter. The mysterious wolf claimed to be Scott. She’d love for his declaration to be true, but she wouldn’t hold her breath.
“The guys will be
happy to get back to work,” she said, hoping to start up some conversation. The inside of the truck had been so quiet the last few hours, all four men remaining uncomfortably silent. There was so much that needed to be said. Keeping quiet wouldn’t make all their problems disappear.
“I’m sure they will,” said Garret. Not long afterward, he pulled into the mine.
“Why are we here?” she asked. All Cassidy wanted was to return to their home in the woods. She missed the warmth of the cast iron woodstove and their big, wooden bed. It was the place she called home. “It’s the middle of the night.”
“It’s the best place for now. Until I find out exactly what’s lurking on my property, you’re safest here.”
“Would a fence keep you out if you wanted to get in?”
Garret said nothing in return, only confirming he’d go to hell and back for her. How far would Peter or Corbin go? Stalking and forest fires could be only the tip of the iceberg when it came to their madness. She didn’t want to discover the full extent of such obsession.
They ushered her through the cool darkness to Garret’s private trailer. Crickets chirped in the shadows, the soft glow of stars offering minimal lighting. The men were like an entourage, crowding her as they walked. When they got to the door, Patrick entered first, inspecting the room before she was allowed to enter.
“Matthew, you’re with me.” Garret nodded to his friend.
“You’re leaving me?”
“Patrick and Travis will be with you. I need to find out what’s happening in the forest.” He kissed her hand, his lips lingering on her skin as he looked at her with his wolfen eyes.
She dared not ask about Evan now. The look in Garret’s eyes told her all she needed to know. He was just as worried and determined to find out where his pack mate was. But watching Garret and Matthew leave, knowing they could potentially never come back, was terrifying.
