by Nicholas Blake

They garaged the car and went indoors. There were a few bills and letters lying on the table. Georgia began opening them.

“Nigel, come here. The worst has happened,” she cried tragically.

  “What’s that?”

“Look, a notice from the Council. It starts off, ‘Inasmuch as . . .’ There’s a nasty ring about that phrase. Yes, we’ve failed to cut our hedge, we have to appear before a Justice of the Peace, we are to be prosecuted. D’you think they’ll put us in prison?”

“I’m afraid so,” said Nigel solemnly. “We have broken the law. We must pay.”

Georgia waved the official notice in the air. “The Thanks of a Grateful Country,” she declaimed. “I shall wear it next my heart for ever.”
