  “What?” Thea asked.

  “It was you. You’re the one that convinced Jane Rollins to vote for my vision.”

  “Do you mean Jane Rollins, your mother’s friend?”

  “That’s the one.”

  “I didn’t know she was a board member. Everything I said was because I believed in your vision, Landen. I wasn’t trying to change anyone’s vote.”

  “I know,” Landen said. “That’s probably why she listened so closely and took what you said to heart. You weren’t telling her that stuff because you were trying to solicit votes, you were telling her because you believed in my vision and in me. And you did this all when you thought I was still with Amber.”

  Thea didn’t know what to say. “I did and I do. Believe in you, that is,” she said quietly.

  “I know, and you don’t know how much that means to me. Please let me thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

  “You’re so very welcome, Landen,” Thea said and she reached up on her tiptoes to kiss him gently. They walked in silence for a few minutes until Landen saw something on the ground and picked it up.

  “What’s that? A treasure?” she asked with a smile.

  “No. Just a piece of wood,” he said as he threw it into the brush. They walked a bit farther and Landen pointed out something near the shore by Thea’s right foot. “What’s that?” he said.

  Thea bent down to pick it up. “It’s an old film canister. I haven’t seen one of these in a long time,” she said. She was about to toss it back to the ground when she heard something rattle inside. “There’s something inside. Maybe it is a real treasure,” joked Thea.

  “Open it and see what’s inside,” suggested Landen.

  The top stuck a bit as Thea tried to pry it off. When it came off she still couldn’t see what was inside. She dumped the contents in

  With tears in her eyes, Thea nodded frantically. “Yes, Landen Evan Ellsworth. I will marry you.”
