Who, us? I asked.
Bixby was trying to push Lester Fine along without actually touching him. It didnt work. Fine opened his mouth to say something else, but before he could, we heard the frosted sliders open and turned in unison to see Bitsy carrying a tote bag that was almost bigger than she was. June was hurrying after her.
You cant be in here, June said loudly.
Bitsy saw me, waved, and turned to June. Im just dropping this off, she said, indicating the tote bag, in a tone that clearly said, Dont mess with me.
June looked up at Dr. Bixby and shrugged. Bixby nodded, as if to say it was all right. June turned and went back out the doors. Bitsy continued toward us.
Bitsy grinned, reveling in the fact that everyone was watching her.
Whats up with the door Nazi? Bitsy demanded. Like this is some sort of prison.
Being a little person, she had no problems being a little politically incorrect.
I, on the other hand, wanted to shrink into the floor and disappear. Although not as much as I did just a second later, when Bitsy pointedly looked up at Bixby and winked. Hes cute, she said, handing me the tote bag.
I felt my face grow hot.
The bag weighed a ton. I wanted to see exactly what Bitsy had brought. Maybe a saw, so Tim and I could break out of this joint.
Bitsy was the first to break the ice.
You have to stay here all day?
I was keenly aware that wed already been here a couple hours, that it was now past noon, and that I was hungry. I was starting to hope Bitsy really did put a saw in that bag, or at least something that would give me an excuse to leave.
Just to monitor them, Dr. Bixby said.
The TV crew is just outside. I dont see why this is a problem. Lester Fine obviously had moved beyond the current conversation. He was completely ignoring his lackey, who stood behind him, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot. I tried to catch her eye, but she was staring at the floor, her head down like a good servant. I felt bad for her.
Bixby shook his head. Im sorry, Lester, but cameras are not allowed back here. HIPAA laws, you know.
Ah, patient privacy rules. I liked the sound of that.
But Lester Fine was not one to give up easily. We could take them outside and talk to them there, and then they can come back.
Take who outside? He was staring at me and Tim. Oh, right, the victims. But before I could say anything, Bitsy jumped in.
Just who do you think you are? Bitsys voice bellowed louder than her small stature would imply. Are you looking for some photo op that would make you look good to voters?
Lester Fine looked at Bitsy then, a snarl creeping around his mouth. And just who do you think you are?
Uh-oh.
I am one of those voters. You should speak to me with a little more respect. I am also this womans friend, and shes been through a horrible ordeal today, and you cant exploit that for your own personal gain. Maybe I should go out there and tell those reporters the kind of person you are.
I wanted to applaud, but it might not go over well.
Lester Fines face had turned a bright shade of red. He took a deep breath and stood up a little straighter. He pulled down on his suit jacket, held his head high, and stormed off around the center station and out the frosted doors without a response. The woman shuffled off after him.
Bixby was smiling at Bitsy. Thanks. He wouldnt listen to me.
You have to know how to talk to some people in just the right way, Bitsy said, turning her charm on.
How many TV crews are there out there? I asked, eager to interrupt.
I counted three trucks, Bitsy said.
Detective DeBurra said hed deal with them, Bixby said. That must be where he was, then. Dealing with the media. Of course now Lester Fine had gone out to show off his pretty face, so even without the victims theyd still get a story.
Tim had taken the tote bag from me and was rifling through it on my bed. He took out a pair of jeans and a button-down shirt, a pair of socks, shoes, and boxers. He started for his own curtained area, but Bixby put his hand up.
You cant change yet. We cant release you for another couple of hours.
Tim stared him down. You said yourself that were probably okay.
Probably. Not definite. Bixby took the pile of clothing. Well keep this safe, and you can change later.
Its cold in here, I said.
Bixby took out the boxers and socks and handed them to Tim. He looked at me and said, You can put something on, too, but you have to keep the johnny coat on.
Great. But it was better than nothing.
Tim, clutching his clothing, went behind his curtain.
Bixby turned to Bitsy. You can stay for five more minutes, but then you have to leave.
She nodded and smiled. Bixby smiled back, as if he couldnt help himself.
Hes really cute, she whispered, pulling my curtain closed.
I know, I whispered back. I took a pair of underwear out of the bag and slipped them on. The bra was a black lacy one, a Victorias Secret purchase from when I was dating Simon Chase the playboy. I raised my eyebrows at Bitsy as I held it up, and she chuckled.
Its for the doctor, she said innocently.
I took off the johnny coat and put the bra on, wishing it covered up more than it did. It was one of those bras that make you look like youre a lot more endowed than you are, because it squeezes everything together.
It was not comfortable.
I gazed longingly at the stretchy slim black T-shirt in the bag. I made an executive decision and slipped it over my head. Without debating with myself, I also put on the skinny dark jeans and the Tevas and wadded the johnny coat up and threw it in the corner.
Bitsy just stared. Youre not supposed to change, she admonished, but in a whisper.
Im getting out of here. We need to find Charlotte.
I dont know where she is, Bitsy said. Joel and Ace and I have called all over.
Shes got to be somewhere, and I hope shes not sick, I said, peering out through the crack in the curtain. Bixby was nowhere to be seen; the nurses were busy tending to other patients.
So whats the plan? she asked.
Youre going to have to go out there and make some sort of diversion so I can slip out unnoticed.
Like maybe I should fall or something, make a racket, and tell them Im going to sue?
Sounds good to me.
Bitsy cocked her head in Tims direction. What about him?
What he doesnt know wont hurt him. Even as I said it, though, I felt a bit guilty. And a little nervous. He wouldnt be happy once he knew I left without authorization. I tried to convince myself that I felt fine, and no one had committed me here. I was a free agent.
I could probably kiss any sort of date with Dr. Bixby good-bye.
Bitsy handed me a set of keys. My car is in the parking garage, level three. Its right near the elevator. You cant miss it. Ill meet you there.
I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. Youre the best, Bits.
You do know I expect a raise for all this?
I couldnt tell whether she was joking. I watched her go out around the center station and through the frosted doors. Within seconds, a loud thud shook the floor, and I heard a cry. I hoped she really hadnt hurt herself.
Clutching the keys, I stepped out into the main area among the nurses who were heading for the waiting room to see what had happened. One stopped me.
Where are you going?
I indicated the bathroom. She nodded her approval and continued past me. I stopped in front of the bathroom door, glancing around for Dr. Bixby, but didnt see him. I did see Tim, looking out from behind his curtain.
I gave him a little wave and a nervous smile, and just as he
took a step toward me, I bounded out the frosted doors. Bitsy was on the floor, four nurses and June surrounding her. She gave me a wink as I caught her eye, and I kept walking.
The door to the parking garage was just to the left; I could see the media circus outside, Lester Fine preening and Frank DeBurra scowling.
I pushed open the door that led to the garage; the heat hit me squarely in the face. The elevator gods were with me, though, because when I pressed the button, the doors slid open immediately. I went inside, hit three, and watched the doors close in front of me.
Chapter 27
I scrunched down in the front seat of Bitsys MINI Cooper as well as I could. The car was made for a little person, not for someone almost six feet tall.
As far as I knew, no one had followed me.
But then I had a thought: What if they demanded Bitsy stay and be monitored, too? Just so they could avoid a lawsuit?
A little flaw in what wed thought was a perfect plan.
My leg fell asleep, and when I moved it, pins and needles tickled my muscles. I wondered what time it was; Leslie had taken my watch along with my earrings. I rubbed my ear-lobes. They were naked.
Ah, brilliant idea. I shimmied around and stuck the keys in the ignition, turning it until the clock lit up like a Christmas tree.
Two oclock.
I debated turning on some music but decided against it in case someone came by and heard it and wondered why the radio was on in a car that was apparently empty.
I counted the seconds and watched the numbers slowly change on the clock. One minute, two minutes, three minutes . . . This was going to get old really fast.
Footsteps outside. I peered up at the window and saw a hand reaching for the door. Every muscle got tighter.
Bitsy climbed in and gave me a grin as she put on her seat belt and turned over the engine.
You look like origami gone bad, she said.
Howd it go? I asked, ignoring her.
Oh, I made a fuss, then got up and showed them my miraculous recovery. She paused and looked down at me. Dr. Bixby saw you leave.
How do you know?
He walked me to the elevator and said if you show any symptoms at all, you have to come back. He also said hed have to alert the authorities.
Either he was on my side or he wasnt. He couldnt be on the fence. That didnt bode well. Especially since the authorities would undoubtedly be Frank DeBurra, who was already mad at me because I hadnt yet answered any of his questions.
Bitsy stopped at the garage cashier and handed over a few dollars.
I expect to get reimbursed, she said grimly as we pulled out into the sunshine.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I said and started to stretch out.
Not yet, Bitsy warned as the car turned.
Sirens sounded from somewhere.
Theyre behind us, she said.
How far back?
Far enough.
Are you sure theyre after us?
No. But I dont want to do anything that would make them suspicious, so stay low and Ill take care of it.
Bitsy was very good at taking care of things, but she also could take things too far. As I felt the car speed up, I got a little worried.
I can lose them, Bitsy muttered to herself.
The car turned this way and that, and I had to hold on to the center console to keep from getting bumped around. I gazed longingly at the seat belt that dangled just over my head. The pins and needles were worse now.
A few more turns and we could no longer hear the sirens.
I think you can get up now, Bitsy said.
Easier said than done. I finally managed to get into the seat, reaching over my arm for the seat belt and securing it.
I didnt recognize where we were. It looked as though we were in an alleyway.
Where are we? I asked.
Youll know soon enough.
I knew better than to question her further.
Finally she pulled up against the curb and stopped the car. She turned to me.
Do you think you can find Charlotte?
I dont know.
You dont think she killed that guy, do you? Bitsy asked.
Id briefly asked myself the same question but pushed it aside. Id seen Wesley Lamberts body and its environs. It seemed as though hed just died from getting sick from the ricin. Nothing had been mentioned about the possibility of him being murdered. No. I paused. I dont know how long Ill be. I thought about my clients. Can you reschedule my afternoon?
Bitsy smiled. Already did. And Im not kidding about the raise.
I know.
And youll have to pay me back.
Two dollars for parking?
She was handing me a bunch of bills. Youre going to need something so you can get around.
I took it, quickly counting out fifty bucks. Thanks. Youll get everything back and then some.
She smiled. I know. Call later and let us know whats up.
I got out of the car, then leaned down and asked, Where are we, anyway?
In a safe place, she said.
I shut the door and she took off. I watched the back end of the MINI Cooper until it turned right and out of sight.
Looking around, I suddenly became aware of a stink that was emanating from a Dumpster just a few feet away. Mixed in with it was the odor of Chinese food. Steam was pouring out of a vent in the building to my left. A Mexican guy wearing a stained white chefs coat was sitting on a plastic milk crate and smoking a cigarette, talking to a guy who had his back to me. Smoke curled up from the cigarette dangling from the guys fingers.
The salt-and-pepper buzz cut and the ink on his arms told me where I was.
In the alley behind Murder Ink.
Chapter 28
Jeff Coleman turned around and lifted the cigarette to his lips. He took a drag, blew out the smoke, and said, Took you long enough, Kavanaugh.
The Mexican stamped out his cigarette on the concrete, nodded at me and Jeff, and went inside.
I walked over to Jeff, whod started for the back door to Murder Ink.
How did you know I was coming?
Bitsy called.
Did she tell you what was going on?
Said you needed some help. Why she thought of me, I dont know.
I knew. No one would think to come here, not Tim, not Frank DeBurra.
I was definitely giving that girl a raise.
Whats going on? Jeff asked, holding the door open for me.
As we went inside, I told him how Bitsy and I had escaped the hospitaland the police.
And why did you need to escape?
Have you seen the news today? With all the camera crews outside the emergency room, it must be all over TV.
I dont exactly have time to be watching Oprah. Why dont you tell me whats going on? He shoved a chair on wheels in my direction, and I stopped it with my foot and sat down. He settled into a worn black leather chair and stuck his feet up on the desk, on top of a pile of stencils.
I started at the beginning and told him the whole thing.
When I was done, his mouth was hanging open.
You do manage to get yourself into all sorts of predicaments, Kavanaugh.
It wasnt my fault. Charlotte
Got you into trouble, he finished for me. That girl is trouble. Have you stopped to consider that maybe shes part of all this?
I frowned. No.
Thats because youre way too trusting, Kavanaugh. The world hasnt chewed you up and spit you out yet.
Oh, is that why you look the way you do? Because youve been spit out?
He stared at me a second, and then chuckled. You really need to lighten up.
I really need to find Charlotte and make sure shes okay.
<
br /> Dont you think the cops are out looking for her? Why would you be able to find her first?
Good question.
I heard a buzzer in the distance.
Jeff looked up at a clock on the wall. Thats my client. He got up and shoved the stencils around, grabbing one.
So youre just going to leave me back here? I asked.
He shrugged. You can stay or you can go. He reached into the front pocket of his jeans and pulled out a set of keys. If you promise to drive safe, you can borrow my car. He tossed me the keys.
I reached out and caught them with my left hand.
He grinned. Good catch. Cars in back. Gold Pontiac. He started for the front of the shop, then paused, turning back for a second. Be careful, Kavanaugh.
Why are you being so nice?
Because maybe Id like to think that the girls not guilty, either. And no cracks about me having a heart or anything.
He disappeared through the sixties-style colored beads in the doorway.
I eyed the keys in my hand. He didnt have to know that I didnt have my drivers license on me. Did he?
I shoved the back door open and found his car just up past the Chinese restaurant.
Gold was an understatement. It was as bright as a new penny. I certainly wouldnt be undercover in this. But who would think to look for me in a gold Pontiac anyway? As I climbed into the drivers seat, I started to feel a little invincible.
But just a little.
The car smelled like cigarettes, and I had a sneaking suspicion that I would, too, once I emerged. The ashtray was overflowing with butts, and I pulled it out and took it over to the Dumpster, where I emptied it.
I started the car and pondered where I should go. Tim would argue that I should go back to the hospital, answer DeBurras questions, and apologize for running out on Dr. Colin Bixby. That would be the right thing to do.
Instead, I turned north on Las Vegas Boulevard.
If Charlotte wasnt at Aces, like yesterday, and she probably wasnt home because the police were sitting on top of her apartment, then where would she go?
She might be at Trevors.
I didnt know where Trevor lived, but I did know where Chez Tango was, and maybe Kyle was there. He might know where Trevors place was.
