“I was going to tell you, but I thought I’d surprise you for your birthday,” he said.

  “Best. Gift. Ever.”

I hugged him again, and he held me closer, pressing his cheek to my hair.

“There were some days…” he said quietly. “I was afraid I’d never remember.”

I rubbed my hand along his back. “I’m so, so happy for you.”

He slowly pulled his head back to face me. “Would you like to hear ‘Over the Rainbow?’”

  “I would love that.”

As he began my favorite rendition, I rested my head on his shoulder. I loved being so close to him while he played and feeling the joy that always radiated from him.

When he finished I kissed his cheek, and he rattled off a string of impromptu cheerful notes, making us both laugh.

“Having that autographed sheet music up there was great inspiration.” He pointed to his framed gift on the wall. “I’ve been thinking a lot about the song and how it would make an awesome long program.”

“Totally. We should get with Em and Sergei on it right away.”

“I was thinking we could save it… for the Olympic season.”

“Oh.” I shifted my eyes to the keyboard.

“I know we said we’d take it one year at a time, but I couldn’t help but think ahead. If you don’t want to keep skating until 2014, though, I understand. It’s a lot to deal with and—”

“No, it’s not that. I haven’t ruled anything out yet. I just… I don’t want to look that far ahead. I did that with Mark — focused too much on the Olympics — and I don’t want to get wrapped up in that again. I want to focus on living in the moment and enjoying every day of skating with you.”

He smiled and put his arm around me. “That sounds like a great plan.”

“This is why we make such an awesome team.” I patted his thigh.

“Except… I do still want to save the Muse song… for a season that shall remain nameless.”

I laughed and nodded. “I can agree to that.”

I let my mind wander to that nameless season for a minute. It couldn’t possibly be more difficult that what we had endured the past season. But then I remembered the pain and anguish I’d gone through twice trying to make the Olympic team, and my stomach twisted at the thought of experiencing that again.

Josh kissed my forehead as if he knew exactly what I needed at that moment. With him by my side, I had to believe things would be different because there was one thing I knew with absolute certainty — I was wholeheartedly his, and he was undeniably mine, and there was nothing stronger than the love between us.
