Theodore had to blink his eyes but once before the darkness and the chaos cleared away, and a wide, dirt road appeared before him, with Sam sat at its center. The disheveled shopkeeper was glancing wildly about, from the towering trees that lined either side of the roadway to the place where the path crested and disappeared into the horizon. A rhythmic sound was building there—at the spot where the setting sun sank into the hillside—and it was growing louder. Something was coming.
In just moments, the roofline of a medieval carriage appeared. As if fleshed out, a team of draft horses preceded it, their steaming flanks creating a cloud that engulfed the entire procession so that it appeared to float. Golden strings dotted with bells and trinkets hung from the rigging that linked the beasts, and their chimes grew louder as they neared Theodore and Sam. Still stupefied, Sam did little more than stare as the team approached and a man with a bejeweled crown hung his head from one of the carriage windows and leered at them. He spat the word, “Peasant!” at Sam as he passed, and the humble shopkeeper’s jaw dropped.
Sam stared on, speechless, until the carriage was little more than a speck on the skyline, and then turned his expression of shock on Theodore. He’d parted his lips to speak, but instead froze and turned ghostly white as the dog plainly explained, “I think we’ve gone inside the book, Sam.”
About The Author
K. (Kristine) Kibbee is a Pacific Northwest writer with a fascination for all things literary. Kristine’s passion for creative writing began in her early youth and led her to the doors of Washington State University, where she earned a degree in Humanities, with a focus in Professional Writing. Kristine followed her scholarly pursuit of writing with published works in The Vancougar, The Salal Review Literary Review, Just Frenchies magazine, and S/Tick Literary Review. She is presently a regular columnist for Terrier Group magazine.
Kristine’s novella, The Mischievous Misadventures of Dewey the Daring, was her first and only self-published release, and is still currently available on Amazon.com. Her middle-grade fantasy novel, Whole in the Clouds, was released in November 2014 and is being re-released by Incorgnito Publishing Press, with additional material, in October of 2016. The first installment in her YA fantasy series, Forest of the Fae-Devlin’s Door, was released in early 2016 by Incorgnito.
Kristine anticipates following the release of book two in the Forests of the Fae Series (The Raven Queen) with a third and final installment, which is tentatively scheduled for early 2018.
