Kate felt a deep peace and happiness she had never imagined she could know. She loved her work, her home, her community. She loved Smoky and Willow, who caused havoc wherever they went. Most of all she loved Conor. With every fibre of her being. Sensing his approach behind her, she leaned back against him as his arms enclosed her.
His lips nuzzled the sensitive spot behind her ear. ‘Kate, are you all right?’
‘I’m fine.’ She smiled to herself, relieved now she knew just how fine.
‘You’ve been distracted since we came home,’ he said. ‘What’s wrong?’
‘Nothing. Honestly. Not now.’
‘Not now?’ She heard the concern in his voice, his arms tightening. ‘So there was something?’
‘I was worried about my anti-malaria medication.’
‘You’re not feeling well? Why didn’t you tell me?’
A smile curved her mouth as she turned to face him. ‘I wanted to be sure. Now I am.’
‘Sure of what?’ he questioned with a frown.
‘That everything was all right with the timing being so dodgy.’
Conor’s frown deepened, his hands cupping her rear and pulling her closer. ‘You’re talking in riddles. What timing?’
‘You know the dangers of the prophylactic drugs for some people.’ She couldn’t help teasing him a moment longer, hot desire flaring inside her at his touch. ‘Pregnant people.’
Conor stilled, one hand moving round to curve protectively over her belly, a suspicion of moisture filming his green eyes as he stared at her in joyful anticipation. ‘You’re serious?’
‘I am.’
‘We’re going to have a baby?’
‘We are!’ His urgent, excited kiss took her breath away. ‘Hannah and Nic are coming to dinner!’ Kate protested, laughing when he whisked her inside and began stripping off her clothes, her fingers sinking into the thickness of his dark blond hair as he dropped to his knees and pressed his mouth to her navel.
‘They’ll understand. I intend to celebrate baby number one first,’ he murmured, his breath warm against her skin. ‘I wonder how it happened.’
‘You need me to explain the facts of life, Dr Anderson?’ She laughed at his expression.
‘It must have been that day you got so wild and the condom broke!’ he teased, and a tide of colour warmed her face. ‘I can’t believe you can still blush! Not after the sinful, shameless things you do to me!’
‘Conor!’
Laughing, he tipped her onto the bed, shed his own clothes and followed her down. ‘You’ve made my life so special and happy.’
‘I aim to please.’
‘Oh, you more than please, sweetheart!’
His suggestive chuckle set her pulse racing, her fingers tightening on his shoulders as he set his mouth to the hollow of her throat. ‘You’re not too bad yourself.’
‘Yeah?’
‘Yeah.’ She slid her hands down his back and wriggled provocatively under him, smiling at the evidence of his arousal.
‘Now you’ve done it,’ he groaned.
‘I do hope so!’
For a moment he paused and raised his head, the look in his sexy green eyes warming her from the inside out. ‘I love you, Katy. My perfect partner in every way.’
‘I love you, too.’
And then they no longer needed words, their bodies taking over and demonstrating the intensity of their feelings and the loving bond between them that grew more special with every passing day. The events of the past had led her to Conor, who had helped her to heal. The past would always be with her, she would never forget, but thanks to Conor she had faced her demons…He had taken all the broken pieces of her life, her very self, and had put her back together, making her whole again. Out of pain and loss had come hope and love…a love now growing new life inside her and cementing the promise of a long and happy future together.
