Hunger Embraced (The Hunger Series)
Page 29
I slid from the bed and padded across the floor, digging through the pile of my belongings in the corner since Gregory had evicted me from the spare bedroom.
“Hello.” God, Anna was going to think I was drunk or something.
“I told you to come to me. But you are as disobedient as ever.”
“Who is this?” My heart pounded. I had a pretty good idea.
“This is Adrian. Your king. Your betrothed. You have not shown me the respect I deserve by attending me. That was a mistake.”
My heart jackhammered, and my tongue swelled huge in my mouth. I tried to swallow and gagged instead.
“Excuse me? Do you have any idea—”
“You have disobeyed me. You will be punished. If you do not attend me, I will damage your friend. Permanently.”
I tried to form a sentence that made sense and couldn’t.
“Do not try my patience further, Miranda. I have waited long enough.” A feminine scream came through the line, and I cringed. “Anna is relatively unharmed. For now. Two days. To show how generous I can be.”
The line went dead, and I stared at the phone wanting nothing more than to throw it at the wall and smash it to pieces. I could feel Daniel in the doorway, staring at me.
“Adrian has kidnapped my friend Anna. He called me from her phone. I could hear her scream in the background.”
He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around me, not making any attempt to tell me sweet lies. There was no guarantee she would live, but we both knew I couldn’t leave her there.
“Don’t worry Miranda. I’ve been aching for a fight with that twat. He’ll be sorry for his manipulations.” Gregory smiled at me with a predatory gleam in his eyes. The man had nearly lost his brains through a hole in his skull a few hours ago, and he was ready to go out and fight again.
“You’re nuts.”
“Eh, I haven’t died more than once yet.”
I glanced up at Daniel. “What do we do? She’s been my friend for years. I can’t leave her there.”
He squeezed me and placed a soft kiss to my mouth, his thumb brushing away a stray tear tracking down my cheek. “We get her back.”
~ About the Author ~
For a girl whose first book was called “The Scariest Forest Ever,” the jump to romance may seem to be a far one. But a love of happy endings and the stories she kept making up in her head for strangers on the street lead to an unhealthy amount of time spent behind the keyboard typing away and giggling mischievously over sassy heroines, sexy heroes, and healthy sprinklings of geek humor.
With time split between a day job staring at teeth, two little girls, college courses, workaholic husband, and too many voices in her head, Jennifer still finds time to sneak off and devour all the books she can find—even if it means hiding in the closet to read them.
She insists on her jokes being dirty, drinks spiked, and tattoos placed in intriguing, muscular places you can only find when the clothes come off.

The fairy’s power over Impassibles threatens everything this new realm was built upon, and as a Lawman, Barrett’s job is to make sure those threats are eliminated.
