Survival Instinct Page 32

Jamie stopped and cupped his hands to shout at his son.

  “Steve, get back!”

Steve was filled with joy when he saw something strange. His dad flailed his arms, as if he was a rag doll. Steve heard a burst of gunfire and his dad dropped to the ground face first, arms spread, motionless. He looked in horror as tiny puffs of smoke rose from the gunshot holes in the back of his jacket.

“No! No... dad, no!” Steve cried and ran to his dad, dropping to his knees in front of him. He ignored the bullets hitting the ground around him. He looked up to see Agent Hammond running past the open door firing inside as Chief Hogan pushed it shut. Pinging sounds rang out as Boris continued to spray the metal door with bullets. Steve could see Agent Hammond lying on the ground with blood gushing from a wound in his arm as Hogan ran over to give assistance.

Sobbing now, Steve cradled his dad in his arms rocking him back and forth.

“Why, dad...Why?” he screamed and looked to the heavens. He heard a muffled groan. There was a slight movement in his arm then his dad wrenched himself free. Slowly, Jamie rose to his feet, leaving Steve bewildered as he sat on the ground. Steve watched his dad in amazement as he removed his jacket without a word. Then he removed his pullover and bulletproof vest.

“I thought you were... dead!” Steve yelled, laughing with joy and crying at the same time.

“How’s Ellie?” Jamie could barely speak.

“She’s fine, dad. The ambulance crew has her.”

“This is going to hurt like hell in the morning,” said Jamie as Steve jumped up to help him back to Agent Hammond’s car.

Hogan helped Hammond just beside them. As they rounded the corner, Moody stood in their way.

“Eric Moody, CIA. Jamie, is Boris Baranski terminated?”

  Hammond rushed forward.

“You bastard Moody! You’ll pay for this when I make my report. You put all their lives at risk to do your dirty work. You could have stopped this.”

Jamie reached in his pocket and took out a cell phone.

“Here Agent Moody, I think you’ll find Boris’ number already dialed in, just press Call and ask him yourself,” he said handing him the cell phone.

Steve was amazed as Jamie carried on walking to the car. He didn’t understand all that went on, but he looked at his dad as though he had never seen him before. What a man!

They approached a corner and Jamie sighed with relief “The ambulance is still here,” said Jamie. He looked at Hammond and asked, “Do you think you could arrange to take the chains off Bill now? Maybe we can all stay on the same Ward, Agent Hammond?”

“Sure,” Hammond winced at his pain. He took a deep breath and continued. “It’ll be a pleasure. Sure you won’t mind my company?”

“Hell no! I don’t bear grudges Agent Hammond,” said Jamie.

Mary ran to him and flew into his arms.

“I hope we can still make Friday night at the movies?” Jamie chuckled.

“You bet,” replied Mary wiping tears away.

Suddenly they ducked at the roar of a huge explosion. Turning in place they all cowered at the sight of a monstrous fireball.

  “What the hell?” screamed Hogan.

Steve looked at his dad and Jamie gave a wry smile.

“Sounds like Agent Moody’s finishing off his own dirty work,” said Jamie. “CIA fingerprints are all over the case now.”

After the shockwave passed, they all stood to see both warehouses destroyed and ablaze, flames shooting upward for hundreds of feet. There was the desolate figure of Agent Moody. He stood there looking bewildered, staring at his finger on the button of the cell phone.
