“It’s been a long process, but Sheila has been there beside me the entire way. There have been some lean months where we had to choose between entertainment and eating.” The suit was expensive, but he had gotten it for a song. It was his armor to bolster his self-esteem upon entering an important meeting.

“Don’t let her go. It’s very rare when two people come together and find the happiness we all have been seeking. It may get stagnant, but you need to be the one to spice things up. Don’t make the mistake of falling into a rut. It will only give you both ideas about expanding your horizons with another.” He was an avid listener and no doubt was using me to peel back the layers of the mysteries of what women really wanted. He was getting first-hand knowledge from the horse’s mouth.

“I want you to remember that guys have only one thing on their mind. It might sound trite, but the truth is sex is always on the table. They will say and do anything to get you to lower your guard long enough to slip between your legs. Don’t give them the satisfaction of giving in too soon. Make them work for the honor of being with you.” He was a wealth of information about the opposite sex. The exchange between us was mutual. We found a confidant in each other.

“I lose sight sometimes of the bigger picture. It’s not all about raw and animalistic urges. I have to see past the pretty packaging for what is lurking underneath. It takes time to find out who the real person is.” I looked up to listen to the captain’s announcement and we both buckled our seatbelts for what was evidently going to be a bumpy landing.

“We all wear different masks. Dating is nothing more than a dog-and-pony show. We want to be ourselves, but we are afraid to let our guard down. Being vulnerable doesn’t come easily to men in general. We think we have to be strong all the time. I won’t make excuses for what happened to you.” He seemed relatively appalled by Jason’s behavior. It would’ve been nice to have him there to give Jason something more than a scowl of displeasure.

“I hate wearing masks. It’s a bit of a pet peeve for obvious reasons. I would rather somebody be straight up from the very beginning than play games. I’m not looking to let anybody in. I have these walls up. It’s going to take somebody with the patience of Job to make me feel safe again.” I was going to concentrate on getting the job as a receptionist for a car company. I had gotten the interview, but I had a feeling I was just one of many to make the long journey from their hometown to make it in the big city.

“I have something for you and I’m not going to take no for an answer. This is a lucky coin. I’m not giving this to you. It’s a loan to help you get on your feet again. I know how it sounds, but I’ve always held onto it in my darkest days. Besides, I want a reason to come to visit. I want to bear witness to how you blossom into the woman you are meant to be.” I snatched it from his grip and looked at it from every angle. It seemed perfectly normal, but I was willing to dispel my belief for the fighting chance to survive the dog-eat-dog world.

I lost sight of him leaving the plane. It was only when I was collecting my luggage when I saw him in a deep embrace with a woman who I could only assume was his wife. She was stunning, with blond hair and a bewitching smile. I could only hope he was going to take my advice to heart. They looked happy and not just putting on a show.

Everybody had their own stories and nobody really knew what was going on behind closed doors.

I had this game I played when traveling where I imagined myself in someone else’s shoes. I didn’t have to play the same game with Benjamin. He had been very forthcoming. I didn’t find a trace of dishonesty in anything he said.

Seeing him with his wife made me yearn for something I couldn’t have. I couldn’t help but feel more alone than ever.

  Chapter two - Tom

The feeling was more than infatuation. It had the ability to wake me up in a cold sweat, clinging to my sheets. The animal within exuded very powerful pheromones.

I targeted two young and impressionable ladies who had been indulging a little too much during the festivities.

My black slacks had already filled out with the length of my manhood pressing obscenely against the material. There was no hiding it. My broad shoulders were well defined in an expensive brand name blue shirt. It went perfectly with my eyes.

Their perfume was too hard to resist. It awakened what was asleep. They brought about this natural need to consummate.

“I see the way you are looking at them,” Logan said, his blond hair cascading down his back in direct contrast to my buzz cut. “Don’t do anything rash. We have been very careful. One wrong move will make it necessary for us to pack up and leave this place in our rearview mirror. I’m not suggesting you can’t have a bit of fun. I’m not immune to the female form.” He was cautious but had been known to let his other part come out at the most inopportune times.

“I don’t normally take advice from anyone. You are the exception to the rule. Be very careful how you wield the power. I’m not the Alpha. I make up for that with my business savvy and know-how.”

This party was to celebrate the pre-launch of a new vehicle. The champagne was flowing and those girls were undressing me with their eyes. They were talking amongst themselves, but I could hear every word like they were standing right beside me.

“I don’t know what it is, but he has me thinking nasty thoughts. I want to tear off his clothes with my teeth. I know it’s not appropriate in this setting, but I definitely feel the heat coming from his eyes.” The buxom blonde had piercing blue eyes with flecks of gold shining in the light.

“I know what you mean.” Her friend was a raving beauty with dark hair, brilliant and straight down to the small of her back. “We might be party crashers, but I feel swayed by his intense gaze. I know the purpose of our visit was to find some dirt on him. The only thing I can think about is how fast I can get him out of his clothes.” This raven-haired beauty was giving me more than a once-over and I liked it.

“I don’t know when I’ve ever felt like I was naked in a man’s presence. Tanya, this is our one chance to do something unpredictable. I don’t look forward to taking the walk of shame in the morning, but I have this feeling his stamina is going to rock our world.” The blond was fingering her cleavage with an ice cube from her glass.

“Natalie, I can’t let you do this alone. I will be there with you every step of the way. We are friends and I take that job very seriously.” She sounded like she was taking one for the team, but I could hear the quickening of her pulse. It was a good sign the attraction between all three of us was mutual.

“Logan, I don’t know if you have been listening, but they won’t be a problem. I might even be able to convince them to write a glowing article about this company. The work never ends. I don’t go out of my way to sleep with those in the company. I leave those victims in your capable hands.” I didn’t know how many times I had intervened on his behalf when those girls he had been with felt slighted. Settling before they went to human resources was a common practice to avoid unnecessary litigation. It was out of pocket from a fund I had set up, knowing full well Logan couldn’t be trusted to keep it in his pants.

“We both know there’s a small but significant problem with getting together with anyone. You claim to have it under control, but those blackouts are getting more frequent by the day.” He wasn’t wrong and full moons were when we had to resort to different measures. The Montana mountains had become our hunting ground when those tendencies got a little bit too hard to handle.

“I can usually clean up my mess, but I can’t say the same for you. I refrain from dipping into the company ink for a reason. You could take a page from my book.”

He lightheartedly punched my arm hard enough to make me feel it. “Tom, this isn’t about me. I’ve seen you at your best and I’ve seen you at your worst. I don’t lose control, but you have skirted disaster too many times to count. I’m not my brother’s keeper, but I do feel it necessary to remind you how bad things could get.”

  I brushed past
him on my way to those girls smiling and touching on a part of me better left alone. “Ladies, I would like to personally show you around. This is my home and I consider it my castle. You have breached the walls of the inner sanctum. This party was by invitation only. I believe I can overlook this for the chance to get to know the both of you better.” I had an arm around each of them and they followed without any kind of resistance.

The plunging neckline on Tanya’s white dress had me performing a casual inspection of the merchandise. Natalie had long legs that went straight to heaven and beyond. I was basking in their perfume and their words hiding their true intention to get me naked.

“Mr. Snowdon, we are great admirers of your work,” Natalie said. “You made your first million when you were barely out of your teens. I can’t believe you haven’t found someone to settle down with. Twenty-five might not seem old enough, but those years fly by in the blink of an eye.” She was a little older than I previously surmised. Up close and personal was a good way to find out the experience behind her words.

“I have been blessed in many ways. This place was my first acquisition when I made that first million. It was a steal at the time. The previous owner was quick to snatch up any offer.” We were having a pleasant conversation and my hands had strayed down to where I was holding two finely sculpted cheeks in my hands.

They were quite vocal when they saw the palatial surroundings of my bedroom. “Natalie isn’t going to say it, but I’m guessing this is where the magic happens.” Tanya was the first to drop the pretense and her dress in that order. The secret underneath was an ensemble in black and sheer enough to see through. Her nipples were making an impression through the material.

The room was spinning and the low growl coming from the deepest part of hell had them giggling with anticipation. I heard the sound of someone’s dress being torn to ribbons. The feeling of their flesh touching my skin was barely registering.

Their voices had become afterthoughts. Cries of ecstasy and legs in the air had me playing their bodies like musical instruments. The pleasure was intense for all of us. I became unglued, the animal taking over making me a passenger in my own body.

I woke up in a fog with the first streaming rays of sunshine slapping me in the face. Everything was a blur of limbs tangling around one another. There were questions left unanswered. Their bodies were exposed to my eyes. This was the first time I had seen them this way without the influence of the bear clouding my judgment.

They were both lazily sleeping soundly with marks of the bear scratched into their flesh. I was lucky it didn’t break the skin. The fire had been temporarily satiated, but I knew it would raise its ugly head again sooner than later.

I traced my finger down the abundant flesh of Tanya’s breasts. I remembered them having one orgasm after another. Each time one was out of commission, the other one was ready to climb aboard the never-ending roller-coaster ride.

I was hoping one day I would find a girl who could mute the influence of the bear. I could finally know what it was like to be in the present.

The array of lights from the city waking up to a new day was blinding. I had to shield my eyes from the glaring sun when I stepped out onto the deck to get a breath of fresh air. I kept looking back at my recent conquests and shaking my head at the absurdity of it all.

I remembered bits and pieces, but it felt like I was a dispassionate bystander. The raging inferno of lust consumed me. There was no fighting when the bear was ready to come out of its hibernation.

I was standing still and closing my eyes to the city noise. It reminded me of how easily I could lose it all.

Regrets had never entered into my vocabulary. I would love to have been there with these two girls in the flesh and in the moment. I had tried several different remedies without any luck. The bear was always there, like some bad dream.

“I would ask what you’re thinking, but I can’t seem to get around the fact you are naked.” I couldn’t remember whether or not she was Natalie or Tanya. It didn’t matter in the faceless revolving door of lovers in my life.

“I’m glad you had a good time. I have an early morning. The both of you can stay for as long as you want, and then you can lock up when you leave.” There was nothing emotionally invested in those who had been the unfortunate recipients of my love.

“I think you may have ruined us for other guys. You were like the Energizer Bunny. You kept going and going until we were wasted and lying in a pool of our own sweat. I have never been taken with such fiery determination. I was done and you kept going until I was lifeless and unable to move.” She put her hand on my shoulder. I felt nothing. It was a by-product of the bear asserting its dominance over me.

“I have to take a shower. I would ask you to join me, but it would negate the purpose. You look spent and in desperate need of a few hours of beauty sleep. I will be sure to look you up in the future when the need arises again. The both of you exceeded my expectations.” The black silk sheets were worn strategically by her, but I was not interested in another round.

“You frightened me how easily you made me succumb. This experience has raised the bar for those guys who come after you. I can’t begin to describe the feeling of being used and abused. I would leave a light on for the both of us. There’s no telling when we will get the urge to come looking for a booty call.”

I had turned away previous candidates and they weren’t going to be any different. I was worried one day the bear was going to go too far. It seemed to be escalating in its destructive behavior toward the opposite sex. I thought when this happened before, it was the last time. I was always saying it, hoping for it to be true.

My phone mad a noise and I was reminded of the board meeting in the morning coinciding with my search for a receptionist. I had gone through some résumés and pinpointed those I wanted to see in person. Some had a good chance of making the grade and others were going to leave disappointed. It was a balancing act to weed out the undesirables.

“I do tend to go to the extremes. The both of you won’t be the first and you won’t be the last. I don’t really remember your name.” I brushed past her on the way to the bathroom. “I know what that makes me sound like, but last night was par for the course. I like women and I make no apologies for enjoying the pursuit of pleasure.” I heard her gasp and glanced over my shoulder to see her with her hand pressed to her forehead. It made me smile but then I frowned a moment later. I was no more a part of this scenario than someone sitting at the edge of the bed watching things unfolding naturally. It was a little disconcerting, but there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.

“I should hate your guts for how callously you move on to the next conquest. I don’t know what I feel for you, but it isn’t hatred. I can’t seem to shake this feeling like you’re still touching me in the throes of passion. I do hate the very idea that nobody is going to be able to measure up in more ways than one.” I had eight inches of dynamite between my legs. They had been able to light the fuse and lie back for the explosive ending.

“You’re not the only one who has been affected by this. I don’t have time to get into a heated debate on the subject.” I nonchalantly closed the door and soon heard the sound of her fingernails scratching with a desperate need to hold onto the piece of heaven I had given her.

  Chapter three - Roseanne

The brownstone was exactly how I had envisioned it. It was a throwback to a different era. The black marble of the counter and the steel appliances weren’t part of the brochure. The landlord had just finished upgrading and renovating the place. I didn’t need to see the whole thing, with the architecture more than enough to get me to put my hard-earned money down.

The landlord was quite helpful in getting me moved in. He was a kindly old gentleman of Chinese descent. I gave him the first month’s rent with a hefty retainer for damages if any were to occur. He even invited me to have dinner with him and his family on the weekend. It was nice to be included.

  I
had very little to my name. Thankfully, the furnishings came with the place, including a king-size bed. The internet was included in the price. I wasn’t going to need cable. I had everything I needed with the internet connection, including a phone with a one-way calling feature.

I had gotten something from the grocery store and heated it up in the microwave. It wasn’t as good as my mother’s home cooking. Shortly after eating, I headed to bed. My sheets were the one luxury I had brought with me. The thread count made me sleep like a newborn baby in the comforting embrace of her mother.

Waking up to the sound of a car alarm made me cringe. The blinds were heavy and dark enough not to let too much light in. It was barely 7:00 a.m. I had an hour to get ready before the interview process. I’d done my due diligence on Mr. Snowdon to know he was a self-made billionaire. Nobody had given him a damn thing and I wanted to learn his secret of success.

I padded my way down the hallway until I was standing in a very hot shower, steaming up the mirror. It was a welcome respite to enjoy how the hot water cascaded in rivers down my body. My apprehension and tension about how I was going to announce myself to Mr. Snowdon were temporarily dissolved.

I decided to wear the same thing that I had on the flight, freshly laundered in the washer and dryer combination in a closet made for just the occasion. The clothing was already laid out on my bed waiting for me when I emerged with a towel draped around me.

I heard the announcement of an email on my laptop. One look confirmed my suspicion. My mother was worried about me and was biting her nails trying to get in touch with me. I had given them no warning about my sudden abandonment. The brief message I had left them did very little to explain.

“I know you’re probably all right, but please give us a call or send us a message at your earliest convenience,” she wrote. “Your father worries you are lying in a ditch somewhere begging for help. You know how he gets about his little girl and how protective he can be. I hope you find what you’re looking for. We had to call the cops on Jason. He showed up drunk, swinging a baseball bat and waking up the neighbors. Sometime today we are going to get a restraining order to keep him fifty yards away from us at all times.” She ended by telling me how much they missed me, but they knew this was something I had to do.
