The Patriot Paradox

by William Esmont

The room fell into shocked silence for a moment as the occupants digested the news.

President Cooper responded first. “What do you mean ‘nuclear’? I need details.”

The secret service agent shook her head and reached for his arm. “We don’t have any at the moment sir. Our job is to get you to a safe location. We need to move right now!”

The president looked at Kurt and Amanda with dismay, like a man who has climbed a mountain only to discover the true summit is still far above. “They’re coming with me,” the president said, gesturing at them.

They looked at each other, and simultaneously whispered, “Another bomb?”

The lead agent considered the president’s command for a heartbeat, and then sprang into action.

As a group, they dashed from the oval office onto the lawn of the White House, where Marine One was already waiting.
