Of course that doesn’t disprove the accusations.
As for the Estate, no change. All of the profits from Marion’s work go to charity. The Estate is run by wonderful people whom I consider friends. The works are a valuable contribution to civilization and I won’t abandon my responsibility to them. If people choose not to read these works because of what Moira Greyland has written, that is their own decision.
While the public allegations of Bradley’s abuse are new, many members of fandom were well aware of her husband Breen’s crimes, and of the fact that Bradley knew about his criminal activities while they were ongoing.
Breen’s proclivities were an open secret in fandom during the ’60s, were discussed in fanzines at the time, and led to attempts to ban him from conventions. He was first convicted of child molestation in 1954, and was given probation. He was arrested again in 1990, plead guilty and was sentenced to three years probation. The following year he was arrested on eight counts of felony child molestation for his abuse of a 13-year-old boy, and was sentenced to ten years in prison in 1992, dying a year later. His daughter Moira Greyland gave testimony that helped lead to his conviction.
Depositions given by Bradley in 1998 during a civil suit revealed that she was aware of Breen’s sexual involvement with underage individuals, and that she defended his actions. When asked, ‘‘So it was your personal opinion that a boy of 14 to 15 years old was old enough to make decisions about having sex with a 50-year-old man?’’ Bradley replied ‘‘Yes, I was. I believe so,’’ before noting that Breen had been 30 at the time, not 50. When pressed about why she never warned anyone about Breen’s predilections, and why she fought attempts to ban him from conventions, Bradley explained, ‘‘I thought it was his own business.’’
The depositions, with many more statements by Bradley, are available online at
In her comments to The Guardian, Greyland said, ‘‘I am so glad I spoke out, because on the blog, so many people have shared their OWN stories of abuse and incest and heartbreak. I am going to keep talking about it, if only so that those people who need to share their own stories will do so now.’’
