“There is nothing you can do about that.” She looked across the room and her voice faded. Leon was having dinner with a pretty girl about his age. His eyes met hers and he deliberately leaned over and kissed the girl on the lips. Abigail felt as if she wanted to die! He told her he was in love with her!

“Darling I have to go to the ladies’ room,” she said faintly.

“Are you okay?” Jack asked her in concern.

“Yes of course,” she murmured before leaving the table and hurrying away.

He followed her and pushed her into one of the empty rooms. “You bastard!” she sobbed slapping his cheek hard.

“You are out with your husband and I told you not to do it. I wanted to be with you tonight,” he told her cruelly pushing her up against the wall.

“Are you screwing her?” she hissed.

“And what if I am?” he asked her defiantly.

She lifted her hand to slap him again but he reached beneath her dress to tear at her thin stockings, plunging his fingers into her roughly! She whimpered and sagged against him. He took her lips with his savagely almost drawing blood as she rode his fingers eagerly. He pulled out of her and quickly released his erection and entered her. She dug her fingers into his hair and thrust against him so hard that he had to grip her in order for them not to fall. She sobbed as she came against him and he emptied himself inside her, his mouth stifling her cries!

Diana had never tasted roasted duck so delicate and tender before! “I m going to have to ask your chef for the recipe.” She said as she closed her eyes and chewed the meat.

He had to tear his gaze away from her mouth. She was not his type! He kept telling himself as his body moved restlessly. “I will ask him for you. Do you cook?”

“A girl from the projects who cannot cook?” she scoffed at him. “I cook and do it very well but I hate cooking for myself.”

He opened his mouth to tell her that he wanted her to cook for him but he closed it just in time.

“So what do you do for fun?” he asked instead.

“I listen to music and I love to dance and I love going to the movies.”

  “So you dance?”

“I dance,” she eyed him for a moment. “When I first met you I thought you were this stuck up rich dude who thought the world revolved around you.”

“Is that so?” he asked her with a lifted brow. “And now?”

“Now I don’t think you are that bad.” She said with a smile.

“I am not that good either,” he told her carelessly as he sipped his white wine.

“No one is,” she said with a shrug. “I am very impressed by this office.”

“I had it redesigned last year.”

  “You have very good taste.”

“I would like to think so.” He told her softly.

They finished eating and he wished he could prolong the dinner but she kept looking at her watch.

“Okay let’s get you home,” he told her allowing her to precede him out of the office.

He saw to it that she was safely out of the showroom and watched as she negotiated the vehicle and merged into traffic. He went back inside his office and sat behind his desk for a long time before he left.

  Chapter 4

“Are you seeing someone else?” Emma demanded as he answered the phone. It had been three weeks since he had been with her and kept telling her that he was busy which was not really a lie. It was October and they were getting in high gear for the Christmas promotions. The shipment had come in and some had gone out and paperwork and meetings had him staying at the office until sometimes ten at night only to come back before seven a.m. the next day. He was thinking that he was going to have to give the staff a hefty bonus this year!

“Why do you ask?” Jeffry’s tone was mild and disinterested causing the girl to quiver in despair. She had been losing him for awhile now but somehow she doubted she ever had him.

“I have not seen you in almost a month now Jeffry. I am beginning to think you are avoiding me.” She strove to make her voice sound casual as if she was not hurting and thought she succeeded. She had seen how the other women faun over him and had decided that in order to keep him she would play a different game.

“I have been busy,” he told her briefly. He was not one to make excuses or give explanations and it irked her that he thought so little of her that he did not give her something to hold onto.

“How about dinner this evening?” she heard the pause and rushed on to say: “I lost a very big case yesterday and I need to vent a little bit.”

Still the hesitation and Emma felt humiliated as she thought about begging. “I will make a reservation at Leon’s” he told her finally. “You cannot win them all Emma, you should know that by now.” He added before hanging up.

Emma McLean blinked as she heard the dial tone in her ear. Damn him! She thought bitterly. She was smart and beautiful and had been born of very wealthy parents who had spoilt her endlessly. She had men lining up to go out with her and would give her anything she wanted not that she wanted for anything! But she had always been attracted to Jeffry! He was the one man who did not think she was spun gold and when he had taken her to bed for the first time she had almost begged him to stay with her the entire night. His lovemaking was careless but incredibly sensational and he had her falling in love with him after only one night. Now she seemed on the verge of losing him. She had started trying out his last name with hers: ‘Emma Rowland’ and it sounds so good! Whatever she had to do to keep him she would do so!

“Are you okay?” Diana asked her brother as he sat on the enclosed patio of her apartment and stared into the drink she had given him a minute ago. He had invited himself over for dinner and she had told him why not? She had rushed about cooking their favorite: deep fried chicken and collard greens with potato salad. It was Thursday night and she had wanted to invite their mother as well but ever since the addition she had been pretty busy having to employ two more hair stylists. She had been about to curl up in front of the television and watch old movies when her brother had called.

She took a seat beside him and rested her head on his broad shoulder.

“Why do you ask?” he put down his drink and turned so she was lying in his lap and looking up at him.

“Because my dear brother you have been uncharacteristically silent throughout the evening and you look as if you are very far away. Who is she?”

He looked down at her wryly, pushing back the hair from her forehead. “Am I so transparent?"

"To me.” She admitted. “You closed the gym early and call up your sister on a Thursday night to come and hang out when I know you have women lining up to be with you.”

“I think I am in trouble.” He said abruptly.

She sat up suddenly bouncing her head on his chin and causing him to wince. “Michael Alexander Walker if you are involved in drugs or loan sharks I am going to murder you and save Mama the trouble!”

“Calm down sis,” he told her with a grin. “If a black man says he is in trouble it has to be something shady?”

“It usually is.” She said grimly looking up at him. “Well?”

“I am messing around with a white girl and I think I am getting too involved.”

Diana stared at him for a moment in wonder. When they were growing up he had always sworn that he would never be with anyone but their own kind because of how much colored people had suffered at the hands of white people. She had never held onto those beliefs. “Is she married?”

“Divorced and rich,” he said with a grimace.

She bit back a smile. Deadly combinations as far as he was concerned! “How does she feel about you?”

“She claims she is falling in love with me,” his shoulders moved restlessly as he got to his feet and started prowling the room. “Me with a white girl?” he shook his head and shoved his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants. “I can’t even imagine it.”

; “Maybe it’s not so bad,” she told him gently following his movements as he traversed the length of the small space. “Love transcends colors honey.”

“Where did you read that?” he asked her sardonically. “I told her that I did not want to see her again.”

“Michael Walker you are an intelligent man! Mama did not raise any fools! Did you tell her that because of the color of her skin?”

“I cannot be in love with a white chick Di!” he told her impatiently.

  “Why not?”

“Because we are supposed to stick to our kind! I feel as if I am betraying our heritage!”

Diana stared at her tortured brother in sympathy. He knew better than to think in terms of color because their mother had always taught them that people were equal no matter how pale they were or how much money they had. Even though they had grown up in the projects they had never felt less than anyone else. But Michael thought differently. She got to her feet and put her hands on his thick muscled arms effectively stopping him and forcing him to look down at her. “Honey I love you more than anything else in the world and would do anything for you but you are a certifiable idiot! Call her up and apologize for this nonsense and work it out with her. Love is love no matter who the person is.”

He tilted her chin and his expression softened. “I love you too baby girl but I am who I am and cannot change that. I stand for what I believe in.” He kissed her on the forehead like he often did when they were kids and released her to reach for his coat. “I am going home to crash. I have an early training session in the morning.”

She followed him to the door wishing she could talk some sense in him. “Please call me when you get home,” she touched him lightly on the arm as he left.

Diana locked the door and rested her head against it for a moment. She knew him and it was going to take a miracle to stop thinking like that!

Jeffry listened a little impatiently as Emma went on about insufficient evidence and filing an appeal and realized that his interest had certainly waned. She had on a soft green silk dress that did wonders for her pale skin and her long black hair. Her eyes were the color of fine emeralds and had fascinated him before but not anymore. He was sitting here in this fine restaurant with a very beautiful woman and he just wanted to go home to his empty apartment.

“Darling you are not eating,” she said mildly during a lull in the conversation.

“I had something to eat at the office.” He pushed the plate away from him.

“I am yet to see that apartment of yours,” she continued in a subtle tone trying desperately to get through to him.

“Another time perhaps,” he told her carelessly signaling for the bill.

Emma’s heart sank as she realized that he was ending the evening. “What’s going on?” she asked finally.

  “What do you mean?”

“You have not seen me for almost four weeks and it is as if I have to beg you to be with me. “What is going on Jeffry?” her eyes were bright with unshed tears and she hated the weakness she was showing.

“I think we should give each other a break,” he told her bluntly as he took some loose bills from his wallet to leave as tip. He hated scenes and he wanted to just get out of here as quickly as possible.

“You are breaking up with me? Now?” her hands gripped each other on the table and she felt as if a shaft had just driven inside her.

“We were not exclusive Emma and I am sorry but I am not interested in a relationship. I told you that before.” His tone was a little impatient.

“I love you!” she burst out suddenly. The minute she said it she regretted it as she looked at the hard expression on his handsome face.

“Don’t mistake lust for love,” he told her grimly. “Love does not really exist now does it? We had a good time and we gave each other pleasure: just leave it at that.”

Emma had never been so humiliated in all her life and she wanted to die! She did something she had never done in public before! Lifting her hand she slapped him hard across the cheek!

He merely looked at her coldly and without another word he left her sitting there!

Jack decided to try something different. He knew he was not the best in bed but it was just that he had not been putting out much effort. He had truly been in love with his first wife but when she had died she had left a vacuum inside him that he had had to fill and fast so he had married his assistant at the office and that had been a big mistake. Now he was married to Abigail and he knew that the only reason she had not left him yet was because of the prenup. When he was on top of her he could swear that she only tolerated him and could not wait for him to finish. He had always figured that because of his looks and the amount of money he had he could always get away with anything but now he was not so sure. His son hated him and his wife appeared to be cheating on him and his place at the company was more glorified than anything else. His son called the shots. He did not belong anywhere.

He came home early that evening to see that she was getting ready to go out.

“Where are you going?” he asked her standing just inside the doorway of their luxurious suite.

She obviously had not heard him come in because he saw when she jumped. Her eyes met his in the vanity mirror and then lowered. She only had on a skimpy red camisole with matching panties and had been doing her makeup. Her blonde hair shone in the light of the lamp near to her and her skin looked fresh and dewy. “Dinner with some of the girls,” the lie flew off her lips easily as she continued putting on her lipstick. It was Friday night and he had come home from college after been away for three weeks and she could hardly wait to be with him.

“Cancel it and let’s have dinner together,” he told her arrogantly. She looked at him in shock. He had never spoken to her like that before and had surprised her by coming home so early. What if he suspected something?

“Darling I won’t be long,” she strove for lightness in her voice as she stood up and walked towards the closet to take out an outfit. She turned with the dress in her hands and bounced into him not having heard him come into the room.

“Cancel it,” he said between his teeth. He took the dress from her and flung it to the floor. “Have you been giving away what I paid for so handsomely?” he asked her silkily running his hands over her generous breasts.

“How dare you talk to me like that! What’s got into you?” she was trembling a little with fear as she looked at him.

“You are screwing around Abby and I am tired of being taken for a ride.” She cried out as he tore the thin material off her and stepped back looking at her insolently. To her horror he took off his clothes hastily and stood there with one hand running the length of his penis as he stared at her. “I need to be satisfied.” He pulled her up against him and pushed her against the wall entering her forcefully, his hands gripping her hips. Abigail held onto him for balance. He had never been so assertive with her before and she had taken it for granted that she could do whatever she wanted with him. He pushed up her legs and thrust into her rapidly. She gasped and closed her eyes, her fingers sinking into his arms as he increased the pace even more. She clawed at him as he touched her deep driving even more until she thought she would splinter into tiny pieces. She came immediately sobbing against his shoulder. He came soon after and braced her back against the wall, his lips finding her nipples!

He pulled out of her and they fell to the carpet both of them trembling from the force of the orgasm. He knelt in front of her and opened her legs. Abigail was still trembling and felt weak as he reached between her and plunged his tongue inside her! She cried out in shock and gripped the carpet. Before long she was babbling as he tongued her ruthlessly putting her legs around his neck. He bit her mound and she screamed letting go as the orgasm tore through her again and again! She was a sobbing mess by that time and without a word he took her up into his arms and carried her into the bedroom. She curled herself into his arms as he entered her again,
the tryst she had planned gone from her mind totally.

  *****

“I am planning a huge Thanksgiving dinner at the house darling and we would like you to come.” Leesa told Diana a week before Thanksgiving Day. She had gone to Paris for a week to do a shoot and was just back a few days. She had not spoken to her brother about his relationship situation and he had not said anything to her. She had been so busy the last few weeks that she had not checked up on him only a couple hurried calls.

“May I bring my mom and my brother?” Diana asked her.

“Of course darling, the more the merrier!” she said cheerfully.

Diana smiled as she hung up the phone. She liked Leesa! For a woman who was so beautiful and successful she was one of the nicest person she had ever known. She hurried into the bathroom to take a much needed shower. Paris had been wonderful! She thought dreamily as she stood there staring into the mirror. She had even been propositioned by a suave and handsome gentleman with a delightful French accent. She had turned him down gently of course.

Her cell phone rang and she went to answer it. “This is Diana.”

“Hey I heard you took Paris by storm,” Jeffry Rowland’s deep voice came over the line.

“I would like to think so,” she told him. “I know I was supposed to be doing the winter promotions but I am available as of now.”

  “No problem. How are you?”

“Trying to remember if some of the meat I ate in Paris was actually frogs or snails. Ugh!” she said ruefully.

“No French to save your life?” he asked her in amusement.

“High school French which was of no use whatsoever.” She admitted.

  “How did it taste?”

“Divine! So I am using that to counter my disgust.”

“Good idea.” He paused. “So what are your plans for the holiday?”

“I have been invited to the party over at Leesa’s.”

“So I will see you there then.”

  “Definitely. Thanks for calling.”

Jeffry hung up the phone and stared at a Rembrandt on the wall of his office. He had seen Brad only last week for a tennis tournament and he had not said anything to him probably thinking that Leesa had told him about it. His messy breakup with Emma had left him in a pretty bad mood and he had been spending more and more time at the office and going to the club almost every evening after he left the office. She had tried calling him to apologize and asking for a second chance but he had turned her down. It was over and he did not want to go back.
