  “He confessed,” Ki said. “In front of this whole street ful of people, he admitted to the murder of Peter Bakemore and to sabotage.”

  “He might hang,” Jessie said, remembering the poor accountant she had promised a job, “and it would serve him right.”

  “Don’t count on it. Poor men hang; rich and important ones often find a way to save their skins.”

  “I suppose that’s true. But before this is over, he’s going to tell the jury everything, including the identities and roles of those Sacramento financiers. They will also be looking at stiff prison sentences.”

  “So it’s over,” Ki said with a nod of his head.

  “Yes, for us it is.” Jessie was glad. “I think it’s time we got back to Texas and the Circle Star.”

  “I agree.” Ki could not suppress a grin. “But if it’s all right with you, let’s go by train.”
