From the first moment I laid eyes on Hayley Stevens, I knew she was going to be someone special. She instantly drew me in from her captivating brown eyes to her beautiful curls. I knew she was going to be the one. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, have lots of kids, and grow old with her. Even though I couldn’t be with her at first, I knew eventually we would; that’s why I changed my ways for her.
Now, as I stared at her laying on the hospital bed, I had to wonder if she would wake up. I should be optimistic, but it has been almost two weeks since she has been in a coma. She had moved her hand a few times, but her doctor mentioned that was common for coma patients.
She looked as if she was sleeping as the monitor beside her was going at a steady pace. That meant things were okay. If everything was normal, then Hales would had woke up. I slightly touched her shoulder, hoping she would feel my touch. After what happened that day of the shooting, I completely shut myself down from everything and everyone. I felt as if I had failed her by not being able to protect her. This was my damn fault that she’s laying in a hospital bed. If she hadn't gotten involved with me, then she would have been sitting in her dorm room at Thompson instead of fighting for her life.
The door opened, causing me to turn around. Lamar stood behind me and sighed.
“I went by the guest house and got you some clothes. I knew you might need them.”
I sighed and turned back to stare at Hayley. “Thanks.”
“If you want, I can stay with Hales while you clean up and get some rest.”
“I’m fine.”
“Mo, you’ve been here nonstop for the past two weeks now. I’m pretty sure you’re tired.”
“I said I’m fine.” I replied in a hostile tone.
“I understand how you feel; that’s my sister, but I know she wouldn’t want me or you not taking care of ourselves. You know how Hales is.”
I smiled as I touched her shoulder again. “I know. She probably would tell me to go take a damn shower.”
Lamar laughed. “Yeah, which she wouldn’t be too wrong about.”
I looked at him and rolled my eyes. “Whatever, man.”
“Your mom is here, Morgan. She’s staying with my parents at the Hilton. She wanted to see you, but didn’t think coming to the hospital was a good idea.”
“Why? Travis, Will, and Caroline are all in jail where they belong; so there aren’t a
ny more threats against us.”
“I know, but your mom feel there might be more.”
I shook my head and sighed. “I wish Craig would leave us alone. The man is dead and he’s still making our damn lives miserable.”
“Mo, go. If anything happens, I’ll call you.”
I got up and bend down to kiss Hayley on the forehead. Lamar’s right; Hayley wouldn’t want me hovering over her; instead, she would want me to have my normal routine. And I did need to take a shower.
“Promise me you will.”
“I promise.”
I sighed and grabbed my coat and duffel bag. Lamar handed me his car keys and I went to the door. I know I will come back as soon as I get myself together. But I needed to visit my mom. Hopefully there weren’t any more bystanders lurking around, because once I know Hales will be okay, I want to go back to my normal life.
***
Once I arrived to the house, instead of going to the guest house, I went to the main one to shower. I knew Uncle Rick would be at work, so I would be alone. As soon as I opened the door, I quickly went to defense mode when I saw someone coming from the hallway. I was about to knock the person out when I realized it was my mom.
“Morgan!”
“Mom!”
I went to her and gave her a hug. She wrapped her arms around me and sighed.
“I’m so sorry for everything.”
I closed my eyes, knowing it wasn’t my mom’s fault for what happened. She was just with the wrong man.
“It’s not your fault, Mom.”
She pulled away from me and sighed. “I know Hayley hasn’t woke up yet.”
“No, but you know Hales, she’s a fighter. She’s not going to give up just yet.”
“I know, son. Her parents are heading back to the hospital so they dropped me off here. I still had a key, luckily, it still works.”
“Uncle Rick never changed the locks. He probably will now since what happened through.”
“I’m sure.”
“I know I shouldn’t ask this right now, but you mentioned during our last conversation that they’re more people that could be gunning for me. You even mentioned that to Lamar. Are there more people out there that know Craig is dead?”
“Morgan…”
“I need to know, Mom! For the past two months, I have been looking behind my back, wondering if anything was going to happen, which it did! Now, the woman that I love is fighting for her life because of my fucked up life! I can’t keep continuing to live like this. If there are more family members, friends, bystanders, whatever, I need to know.”
“For what!? So you could kill them too?”
“If I have to, especially if they try to get to me first.”
“Morgan…”
“Just tell me! It’s not that hard to tell me if there are others!”
“There could be; Craig still does have family members from all over, so there could be a possibility that someone could retaliate; especially since Travis and Caroline are heading to prison.”
“Why you didn’t tell me that Caroline was Craig’s sister?”
“I could only tell you in bits and pieces.”
“Yeah, which I had to guess. You knew I was staying in the same house as someone who was trying to kill me! You could had told me so I knew what I was dealing with.”
“I know, but I couldn’t give out too much information about what was happening.”
I laughed. “And Kyle, where does he fit in all of this? You said he had something to do with this.”
“Kyle doesn’t, but his mom might.”
“What?”
“Kyle’s mom had an issue with me because of your father. She may have been involved with Travis at one point, but I’m not sure if it was romantically or to destroy me.”
I shook my head. “I’m assuming Kyle doesn’t know.”
“That I’m aware of.”
“This is all bullshit! It would had been nice if you would had sat down and told me all of this!”
“I gave you my reasons.”
“Technically, you didn’t, but I don’t have time to go back and forth with you. I have to shower and go back to the hospital.”
My mom stared at me as I went upstairs. I closed the door to the guest room, wondering how much more is my mom not telling me. I know I shouldn’t think like that, but she withheld a lot of information from me regarding Caroline. This only made me think if I should trust my mom again.
***
After taking a long shower, I was getting dressed, wondering how Hayley was doing. I'm still not going back on my word about destroying anyone else who will come in my path. Whether Hayley survives, I had to do something I knew I would regret later, but I needed to do it for her sake.
There was one thing that I was concerned about and that was if anyone exposed me for killing Craig. I wondered would my past catch up with me and I’ll be going to prison like my so-called family. I tried not to think about it as I put on my shoes. My phone started to ring, which made me become fully alert. I went to it and saw that it was Lamar. For some reason, I knew this was the phone call I was waiting on.
“Hey. Is Hayley okay?”
Hayley
I slowly opened my eyes to see Lamar sitting beside me. I tried to smile, but for some reason I couldn’t. While he was desperately paging a doctor to come, I was wondering where was Morgan. I thought he would had been by my side, holding my hand and seeing if everything was okay. I tried to get Lamar’s attention, but I was too tired to do anything.
“Save your strength, Hales. Your doctor will be coming in soon.”
I nodded and looked down at my stomach. I tried to move my hand, but even doing that was a challenge. I guess that gunshot wound was worse than I thought. It probably was since I was unconscious for awhile.
Someone, who I assumed was my doctor, walked in with a huge smile. She was a beautiful African-American woman who had a small afro and were wearing black framed glasses.
“Well, welcome back to the living Miss Stevens. I’m Dr. Harrison. How are you feeling?”
“Like I’ve been shot.” I slowly said and coughed.
“Well, you gave everyone quite a scare, especially your boyfriend. He hasn’t left your side; well, until now.” She mentioned.
I tried to smile, but couldn’t. So he was here. I have a feeling Lamar told him to leave to freshen up. Knowing Mo, he probably haven’t done anything since I’d been here.
I slowly moved my hand to my stomach, wondering if my suspicions were true and if I was pregnant. I didn’t get to know if I was since what happened. Maybe my doctor could tell me.
“I know you’re probably wondering a lot of things, but first, I need to check your memory. So you remembered that you were shot?”
I slowly nodded. “Yeah, it was at Kyle’s club. Travis was the person who shot me.”
Dr. Harrison nodded. “Okay, let’s do some exercises to see if your memory is fully functional.”
After asking a couple of questions, including my first name, the year I was born, and what year it was, Dr. Harrison confirmed that my memory was still intact. Now it was time to ask her if I’m pregnant. When I tried to speak, Lamar held up his hand to silence me.
“Save your strength, Hales.”
“I will, but I need to ask a question.”
“What is it, Hayley?” Dr. Harrison asked.
“First, I need to know if I suffered any permanent damage.”
“We have to run tests to determine that, Hayley. We couldn’t do too much since you were in a coma. Your mobility is fine, but we need to see if any internal damage was done.”
I nodded. “Also, I need to know if I am pregnant. Before I was shot, I had symptoms but I wasn’t able to take a test to see if I was.”
Dr. Harrison tilted her head while Lamar gave a shocked expression.
“You were not pregnant, Hayley.”
“You sure? Did you take any blood from me? I’m sure you did.”
&
nbsp; “I can assure you, Hayley, you were never pregnant.”
I closed my eyes and gave a sigh of relief. I wouldn’t know what I would had done if I was and miscarried.
“Hales.”
I tried to move my head, but felt too weak to, but I knew from the voice it was my mom. She came closer to me and smiled.
“Ah, my baby girl. I’m so glad you’re okay.” She said with tears in her eyes.
My dad also came closer and held my hand. As I looked at the two of them, I wanted to cry too. I knew I worried them from the moment I ran away with Morgan. Hopefully everything that has happened was the end because I don’t want to continue to bring them any more pain.
“Why don’t everyone wait in the waiting area while I check on Hayley, please?” Dr. Harrison announced.
As everyone nodded their heads, I saw Lamar going to his phone, knowing he was calling either Morgan or Tamara.
I sighed as Dr. Harrison and a nurse who appeared out of nowhere began to observe me. I looked ahead, hoping Morgan would get here soon. I needed him here with me.
***
Once Dr. Harrison performed my observation, everything was fine. The only thing she requested me to do was to recuperate so my body could heal. I also learned that I was unconscious for almost two weeks, which made me give thanks to God for watching over me. I could had been dead, but He had a bigger purpose for me, so that’s why I'm still here.
The door opened and Morgan walked in. I looked at him and slowly smiled. Damn, he looked good. His blonde hair was still cropped, but a little disheveled. He was also growing a slight beard. From the time I’ve known him, he was always clean-shaven. The little scruff looked sexy on him, which is making me have thoughts that I shouldn’t be having at the moment.
He looked at me and smiled. “I see you’re finally awake. I was getting worried.”
“I’m sure you were. That's something I never want you to do.”
