“Come on, let’s have some fun.” Kyle said as he put his arm around me. I smiled and we headed to the counter.
After an hour of skating to music spinning from the DJ, I was beat. As I was going to the bench to untie my skates, Kyle glanced at me.
“You know, I actually had a good time.”
“I did too. Thanks for suggesting I go out. I really needed this.”
“No problem. Thanks for bringing me here. It definitely brought back some good memories.”
“You too? I was thinking that when we first arrived.”
Kyle smiled. “Before I hung out with my boys, it was always my mom who took me to go skating. We always had fun together.”
“I can imagine.”
“Yeah; my mom is the best.”
“You mentioned she was in Dallas when we all were there, but no one never saw her. Where was she during that time?”
Kyle cleared his throat while putting on his shoes. “She was around, but just never came by.”
“Did it have to do with Morgan?”
“No, it was more her just not being around people, that’s all.”
I nodded, not needing to go further. I had a feeling Kyle didn’t want to talk about his mom so I’ll leave it at that.
I tried to take off my skates, but instead, I almost feel backwards. Kyle held onto me before I fell onto the floor. I stared at him as his hand slowly went down my back, feeling his soft touch. I began to breathe heavily while he stared at me.
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” He said while pulling me closer to him. I think I needed to end this now.
“You can let go of me now.”
Kyle nodded and slowly pulled away from me. I went to the bench and sat down. From that moment, I felt guilty for even having any type of feelings for anyone else, especially for Morgan’s brother. But it has been six months and for what I know, Morgan is not returning. Should I continue to have faith that he could one day or should I give up and move on?

After what happened at the rink, it was time to call it a night. The drive back to the house was silent as I looked ahead at the beautiful night while Kyle concentrated on the road. With all the thoughts that were going through my head, I needed to talk to someone, so hopefully Tamara was at home. I needed her advice.
Once we got home, I tried to get out of the car, but Kyle gently grabbed my arm.
“Hales, I know you were a little startled about what happened earlier.”
“It’s okay, Kyle. It was just a touch, not anything else.”
“I could tell in your eyes that it was something else.”
“Well, it wasn’t.” I said while getting out of the car. I went to the door and opened it to see Tamara and Lamar on the couch watching a movie. Tamara looked up and smiled.
“Hey; where were you?”
“Out, with Kyle.”
She smiled while Lamar looked to the window. From that look alone something was up.
Tamara looked at me and saw the look I had. She glanced at Lamar who nodded.
“Come on.” She said as she got up and we went to my room. As soon as we walked in, I closed the door and leaned against it.
“Okay, what’s going on? You seemed frazzled.”
“I think I could be having feelings for Kyle.”
“Whoa, that’s not what I was hoping you would say. I understand since Morgan left that you been spending time with him, but he’s Morgan’s brother.”
“You don’t think I know that?! He has help me through so much since Morgan disappeared. He was a shoulder to cry on and a real good friend to talk to. I felt a small connection before when we first met; but now, it’s turning into something more and honestly, I’m scared as hell about it.”
“Maybe you’re feeling this way because Morgan left. As for the tiny connection before, it could have been just lust.”
“Maybe so. Regardless, I feel guilty about it. I shouldn’t be having feelings for someone else when Morgan and I are technically still together.”
“Technically, you’re not. He did say if you found someone to be with him.”
“Do you really think he meant it? Even if he did, he wasn’t talking about Kyle.”
“You’re right about that. Those two were kind of in a good place before he left. They were actually acting like brothers.”
I sat down on the bed and sighed. “I don’t know what to do. What if something does happen between us and Morgan comes back. I can’t risk that.”
“But who’s to say Morgan is coming back?”
Tamara has a point, but in the back of my mind, I had a feeling that he was going to return. I just hope it wouldn’t be too late.
Morgan
After talking to Kimbella about everything that occurred in my life, our hour therapy session had turned into four. I didn’t realize how much pent-up issues I had in me, but I guess that was a given especially after everything that I had been through.
Before she left, she mentioned she will come back in the next week to continue reliving some more of my past with my mom and Craig. Not something I was looking forward to, but I figured it had to be done so I could finally put this shit behind me and move on with my life.
I went to my phone and saw I had five missed calls from my mom. Since the conversation I had with her six months ago, I haven’t really been in contact with her. I know I shouldn’t ignore her, but something about that conversation didn’t sit right with me. Right now, the only person I could trust was myself, so I couldn’t talk to her. Even though I gave information to a total stranger, Kimbella couldn’t release any of my information, so I could say that my secrets are safe with her.
I clicked on my phone and saw a picture of Hayley and me in Dallas. I miss her. I know she’s probably pissed at me for leaving, but I hope she understood why I did it. I couldn’t face another incident like the one in Dallas. I don’t want to experience seeing her slumped in my arms again, not knowing if she’ll survive. She’s my everything, so I have to do what I can to protect her; if that means not being in her life, then so be it.
There was one problem I had though and that was Kyle. Although the two of us are more cordial than before, I still didn’t trust him around Hayley. He wanted her, so this would be the perfect opportunity for him to go after her. Now that he’s living with her, it made the situation even more complicated. If anything does happen between those two, the relationship I had with him was gone and I will beat his ass.
I was going to call Lamar again, but decided not to. He probably would think I was bothering him, but I only wanted to see how things were going; and if Kyle was anywhere near Hayley.
I was about to go into the bedroom when there was a knock at the door. I became concerned, wondering who the hell that was. No one knew I was here except for Aunt Doris, who lend me the keys to her place after I told her I had to get away.
I went to the door asking who it was, but the person didn’t respond. I grabbed my revolver, which was behind a potted bush near the entryway and held it to the door. Since everything that has happened, it was always good to be prepared.
“I asked who is at the door!” I shouted, becoming slightly irritated that the person hasn’t responded.
I grabbed the door handle and quickly opened it, giving a shocked expression to who was standing on the other end.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Hayley
It was a week later and the fall semester has begun. I felt a little weird going back to my classes. Even though I took a couple classes during the summer, it was a little surreal that I only had a few left before I graduate next year. Another reason for the awkwardness was because it brought up too many memories of Morgan and me. Our relationship started at Thompson and we had a lot of great memories that we shared. Too bad he wasn’t around for us to create a few more moments together.
I walked into my Principles of Management class and sat in the middle of the room. I pulled out my
iPad and looked around. Someone walked in and sat in the seat beside me. I glanced at her, wondering why she chose to sit by me when the room was practically empty.
Before I could say anything, she started to speak.
“I guess you’re wondering why I decided to sit by you when there are plenty of seats.”
“Sort of.”
“I usually don’t like to be the first one in a classroom, especially when it’s the first day, so it was good to see someone else here that’s early; that’s why I sat by you, because I know we’ll be cool just based off of that.”
“Oh really.” I replied and glanced at her. I was going to say something smart, but I held my tongue once I saw the sweet smile she was giving.
“By the way, I’m Demetria.” She said while extending her hand to me.
I looked at her and smiled. She had an innocence to her, as her dark brown skin was a little damp from walking outside in the Texas sun. Her light brown hair was pulled back into a high ponytail as she ran her hand through it, making sure no strand was out of place.
She seems nice. I thought as I accepted her handshake. Even though she looked the part, doesn’t mean she was. If I haven’t learned anything in the past couple of months, at least I knew not to trust everybody that I encountered.
“So, what year are you?” Demetria asked.
“Senior.”
“So am I. Why haven’t I seen you around campus?”
I shrugged. “Thompson is a big campus.”
“That’s true. I’m going to miss it here though. I was trying to see if I could delay graduating so I wouldn’t have to leave.”
I laughed. “Why? You should be glad to get out of here.”
“I am, but as people say, your college years are the time for self-discovery; and believe me, I have done a lot of that in my four years.”
I smiled when I noticed more people were coming in, including our professor. I looked ahead as I knew class was about to begin.
As he introduced himself to the class, he later began the session with talks of a project. As the class began to talk at once, he brought up that the project will be the deciding factor to our final grade and that we would have to do it in pairs. I glanced at Demetria, who smiled.
“I guess you’re my partner.”
Demetria nodded. “I guess so. This will be an interesting semester.”
I smiled, realizing that she was definitely right with that one.

After class was over, Demetria and I agreed to meet up one day that week to come up with a plan for our project. Since we had to make a business plan, we had to create a company and write up everything we had to do for a start-up. Sounds pretty simple, but I had a feeling it would be a lot of research.
As I went to my car, my phone rang. It was my mom calling. Since she’s nine months pregnant, I knew she would be calling me nonstop before the baby arrives. We all found out my dad and her were having a girl, which was great for me. I couldn’t wait to baby-sit. And from all the stuff my parents bought, I already knew she was going to be spoiled rotten.
“Hey, Mom. Is everything okay?”
“Everything is fine, sweetie. I was wondering if you weren’t busy this weekend that you could come to Houston and visit me.”
“I can come on Saturday. Kyle’s club opening is on Friday and I was hoping to go to that.”
“Okay, sure. You two are not together, are you?”
“Why do you think that?”
“The simple fact that you want to be at his club opening and you couldn’t stop talking about him during our last conversation.”
“No, I wasn’t. I was mentioning him because of Morgan.”
“Sweetie, I know you’re not over Morgan, so if you are thinking about being with Kyle, then you probably should rethink that.”
“This, coming from the woman who got pregnant by her ex-husband.”
I know I shouldn’t had said that, but it sort of slipped out. Sort of.
“Really, Hayley. Don’t throw my business out there because you’re not sure who want to be with.”
I shook my head and sighed. “Sorry, Mom.”
“No apologies; like I said, I don’t regret what happened with your dad. We created a wonderful child that will be here soon, so I’m happy.”
I looked ahead and saw how beautiful the day looked, which made me think about all of the times Morgan and I would hang out at the park an hour away from campus. It was the time when we were trying to hide our relationship, so we had to find places to go that no one would see us. There was a waterfall there that I loved. I mentioned to Morgan that one of my sexual fantasies was to make love outside, which he gladly fulfilled near that waterfall. Just thinking about that made me a little teary-eyed.
“Are you still there, Hales?”
“Yeah, I am; sorry.”
“Hayley, I know you have a lot on your mind, but just try to make the right decisions on the ones you’re having doubts about. I know you love Morgan, but he did leave; although it was for a good reason.”
“No, it wasn’t. He left because he gave up.”
“He didn’t give up, Hayley; I think in a sense, he was trying to protect you, especially after what happened to you.”
“Whatever. I have to go; I’ll talk to you later.”
Before my mom could say anything else, I hit the end button and threw the phone in the passenger seat.
I leaned my head back in my seat and sighed. I have a lot of emotions going through me right now that I don’t know how to accept. Maybe I should do what’s in my heart and let Morgan go.
Morgan
After the week I had, I could only do one thing and that was stay in bed and think. I still couldn’t believe what went down recently. I looked to the ceiling and sighed. I really needed to see Hayley. I needed to be near her and touch her. Just the thought of her was making me hard. Shit, I needed her.
I continued to stare at the ceiling and thought about the surprised visitor that came to my door. As long as he doesn’t tell anyone where I’m at, then we’ll be cool:
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Kyle stared at me and walked in.
“I didn’t invite you in.”
“I know; I invited myself in.” He said and went to the living room.
“Wow, so your aunt Doris lives like this, huh. Nice.”
“How in the hell did you know I was here?”
“Doris told me, even though she was hesitant to. I tried to ask Lamar, but of course, he wouldn’t budge.”
“Okay, so why are you here?”
“To convince you to go back to Hayley. She’s miserable, man.”
“I’m surprised you haven’t tried to get with her. I mean, this is your opportunity to.”
“I bet you would like that, so you could try and beat my ass? No thanks. Besides, her heart is with you, Morgan.”
I stared at him as he went to sit on the couch. I went to the couch and sat beside him.
“You know why I can’t.”
“I understand that you’re trying to protect her, but it’s been six months. At least give her a text or a call just so she’ll know that you’re okay.”
“You know I want to, but if I do, I’ll be right back there putting her life in danger.”
“Man, her life is probably in danger whether you’re with her or not; especially if someone else knows that she killed that guy. Honestly, I feel like you don’t love her as much as you say you do. If you did, you wouldn’t be hiding like a little bitch.”
I looked at him wondering if I should jump his ass right now. How was he going to come into my place and go off on me like that?
“What did you say?”
“You heard me. You should be by her side and protect her and not letting her fend for herself.”
“I’m doing this so she could live a normal life. I love her too much to let her live the life that she was living before.”
“I know you’re scared fo
r her after what happened, but you two need to be together so you both can be strong together. She needs that and you do too, even though you won’t admit it.”
I looked out the window as Kyle got up.
“Just think about what I said. If you love her, you would be on her doorstep trying to make things right with her.”
“Are you saying this because I gave you the money to pay back Corey?”
Kyle laughed. “No, I’m not. I care about Hayley and surprisingly, I care about you, too. I just want you two to be happy, that’s all.”
I followed him to the door and he turned around. “Just think about what I said. And to motivate you, I 'm having my club opening this Friday, so you can stop by if you want.”
“I’ll think about it.”
“I’ll text you the address just in case.”
I nodded. “Don’t tell Hales that I’m here, okay.”
Kyle nodded. “She must know about Doris’ cabin?”
“Yeah, she does.”
He nodded again and walked out of the door. I closed it and sighed. Kyle was right, I should be with Hayley, but she should also understand I’m doing this for her. If she doesn’t, then hopefully she will in the future…
I was still staring at the ceiling when my doorbell rang. This visit I was expecting. I went to the door and opened it to see Kimbella on the other end.
“Hi Morgan. I hope you’re ready for your session?”
“Yeah, please come in.”
She smiled and walked into the foyer.
“So, what would you like to discuss first?”
I went into the living room and sat down. “My brother came by to see me last week.”
“Oh, wow. Based on your tone, it was an unexpected visit.”
