  Morgan

A week later and so much was going through my mind right now. Between the news Kyle’s mom sprung on me to what Uncle Rick confessed, I thought I was going to fucking explode. There was something I didn’t want to do, but had to, and that was confront my mom.

I tried to do it before when we were in Houston, but that didn’t lead anywhere, but hopefully, I’ll be able to get something out of her and find out how much is she involved in this mess.

Based on the recent news report about Kimbella, her funeral was in two days. Hayley asked if I was going to attend, but I didn’t want to. No one knew that she was my therapist; so I thought, so it wouldn’t be a point for me to attend. Instead, I decided to have a floral arrangement, along with my condolences, delivered to her office. As for seeing the psychologist that she referred before her death, that was out of the question. I didn’t want another person to fall victim to my issues, so I think I’ll do everything on my own for now on.

I told my mom I’ll meet her in Houston, but she decided to come to me, which was surprising since she hasn’t done that since I left home. There’re a lot of things I’m starting to wonder about her, so this was another thing to add onto the list.

An hour later I was sitting on the bench at a park near Thompson. I checked my watch, wondering when she was going to show up, when my phone starting beeping. I saw it was a text from her asking where I was. After giving her my location, I put my phone away and looked at how beautiful the day was. If I wasn’t in such a foul mood, I would be enjoying it, but I couldn’t since I was about to confront the one person that had probably stabbed me in the back continuously since I was a little boy.

I looked up and saw her walking towards me. She gave a bright smile before sitting beside me.

  “How’s my son doing?”

  “I’m fine.” I mumbled.

“Is there something wrong? You normally wouldn’t want to meet out in the open.”

  “Things has changed.”

“Are you still upset over what happened at Hayley’s? Seeing Kyle caught me by surprise. I never thought I would see him and just standing near him brought back painful memories.”

“What memories did it bring? Dad being with Kyle’s mom or you cheating on Dad?”

“Morgan, stop with this nonsense about me cheating on your dad.”

“You stop with your damn lying.”

  “Morgan!”

“I talked to Kyle’s mom. You were the one who started everything by being with Craig first. And don’t deny that you did because Uncle Rick confirmed it.”

“What else did your uncle confessed?” She asked angrily.

“That he blackmailed you into giving him the house. Not only that but you told him that I killed Craig. Why would you do that?”

  “You told him too.”

“Yes, seven years later! Why you never mentioned to me that you told him?”

“Because I didn’t want to dredge up the past. I didn’t want you to relive that night.”

“Unfortunately, I’ve been doing that for months now.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“I don’t see how when you were telling people what I had done! He could had turned me in.”

“Oh please, you know he wouldn’t had. He loves you too much for that. I don’t see why you’re so upset about that when you confessed to him what happened. Don’t you think if you didn’t then Hayley wouldn’t had been shot.”

I gave my mom the side eye at her remark. She had to been kidding.

“So you’re blaming me for getting Hayley shot?”

“I’m just saying if you didn’t tell Rick and Caroline, then none of that would had happened. I warned you about Caroline from the beginning.”

“Actually you warned me after I mentioned that I killed her brother. There has been a lot of things you didn’t mention to me.”

“Is that why you asked me to meet you? Morgan, everything that I had done was to protect you. Our lives were so messed up, from your father having another child to me marrying Craig. I wanted you to live a normal life, that’s why I didn’t want to drag all of these issues to you.”

“If that was your version of being normal, then you had a hell of way of showing it.”

  “Stop it, Morgan!”

“Whatever. As I can see, this isn’t going anywhere.” I said while getting up.

I glanced at her while she looked away from me. I shook my head and sighed.

“I need to know one thing.”

  “What?”

“Why did you try to abandon me?”

  “What are you talking about?”

“Uncle Rick told me that Craig dumped me off on him when I was five. Were you doing it because of Craig, or because you didn’t want me around?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about? I would never do that to you.”

“Please, stop lying. For the past few months, you have been throwing hints at different people and what they’re capable of, but you never once told me what you’re capable of. I have heard so much about you in the past few days compared to what I’d known for years! So please just cut the bullshit and tell me the truth.”

“I don’t like how you’re speaking to me. I’m your mother.”

“Exactly, so you should know when to tell your only son the truth about what the hell happened.”

“Craig did it so we could have some time together. He knew Rick wouldn’t mind, so that’s why he did it. I only agreed to it because I knew we would return for you. So don’t think that I would abandon you, because I wouldn’t.”

“What else are you lying about? Was your relationship with Craig all a lie? I knew he abused you, but were you right along fighting him too?”

“Why would you think that? You were there when he was beating me.”

“Yeah, I was, but it seemed as if you only wanted me there for convenience. You let me see what you wanted me to see. For all I know, you probably been lying about your mental state, too.”

  “That’s enough, Morgan!”

“Oh come on! For the past few months you’ve been acting like nothing was wrong. You probably put on an act for me to feel sympathy for you. I really think you’ve been playing me all of this time.”

“I can’t believe you’re talking to me like this.”

“I’m only doing it because of your lies and deceit. Now, I have to wonder if you set me up to kill Craig.”

Her eyes grew wide to my accusation. I guess that was my answer there.

I nodded. “I guess I’m right.” I said as I walked away from her.

“You knew the horrible things he has done. If I wanted him dead, I would had done it myself!”

I turned around and smirked. “No, you wouldn’t had. You wanted someone else to take the fall and I was stupid enough to do it.”

I continued to walk, shaking my head at my mom. Even though she didn’t confess to it, I knew that was her intention. I was just a puppet in her damn game.

  Hayley

After my last class, I headed straight to the cabin to check on Morgan. He sent me a text letting me know his talk with his mom didn’t go so well. I wished I could had left class earlier, but I had an exam I needed to take.

I used my key to open the door and saw Morgan laying on the couch drinking scotch from the bottle. I sighed as I walked over to him and took the bottle from him.

“What the hell are you doing?” He slurred as he tried to take it back from me.

“Don’t do this. There’s no point in drinking away your problems.”

“I have every right to do whatever the hell I want.” He said. He tried to get up, but fell back down on the couch. I sighed as I pulled him up.

“Let’s go to the bedroom.” I mumbled while holding him.

“Hmmm, that’s definitely a plan, baby.” He said while slapping my ass.

“You’re going to sleep off the hangover you’re about to have. I’ll make some coffee for you to drin
k. Once you’re better, we’ll talk about what happened.”

“I don’t want to talk; I just want to fuck.” He said and I threw him on the bed.

“You won’t be doing that tonight.” I replied. I tried to walk away when he pulled me

  back to him.

  “Lay here with me.”

I sighed and took off my shoes and got into bed with him. I looked at him as he had an unsure look on his face.

“My mom is not the person that I thought she was. It seems as if she has two different personalities. She lied and manipulated me to doing something that I shouldn’t had done. I thought I was doing it to protect her, but she wanted me to do it because she didn’t have the guts

  to.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked while stroking his hair.

“I’m talking about Craig’s murder. She set me up to kill him.”

  “Seriously! Morgan…”

“She didn’t deny it, Hayley. She didn’t want to take the rap for his murder, so she got someone else to do it, which was me, her clueless son.”

  “Baby, I’m sorry.”

“And it’s not just me that is a part of this. I put Lamar in this. And I killed someone because of my damn mom.”

“Morgan, baby, it’s okay. We’ll get through this. We’ll figure out a way to expose everyone that has hurt you, even your mom.”

I could tell then that he was about to break down. This is a part of Morgan that I have never seen before. Just seeing it was making me want to do that same.

I held him as his face was buried against my shirt sleeve. I can’t believe his mom would do this to him. Now, I think it was time for me to confront Sophia.

  ***

After Morgan fell asleep, I headed out to go pay a visit to Sophia. I called Tamara to see if she wanted to ride along. I would had asked either Lamar or Kyle, but I knew they would talk me out of it. At least I know with Tamara, she wouldn’t.

“I can’t believe you’re doing this.” She said when she got into my car. We were heading to the freeway preparing for the hour drive to Houston. I didn’t care if the drive was 24 hours, I was eager to confront this bitch for destroying Morgan’s life.

“You should be upset too. Lamar is involved in this as well.”

“I get that, but do you really think this will solve anything?”

Honestly, no, but at this point, I didn’t give a shit. For whatever selfish reason, she intentionally hurt my man and her son. What type of mother would do that to her child?

Since it was a time that traffic was steady, I was able to make it to the city in 45 minutes. I let Tamara in on everything that happened during the ride to Sophia’s home.

Tamara blew out her breath and sighed. “All I can say is wow.”

“I have a lot more choice words for his mom.” I said and got out of the car.

I didn’t even wait for Tamara as I approached the door. Instead of using the doorbell, I began banging on it so she would open it faster.

“Who’s there!” She yelled from inside. She opened the door and gave a confused look.

“Hayley, what are you doing here? Is Morgan with you?”

“No, he’s not. I need to speak with you.”

  “Sure, come in. Hi Tamara.”

Tamara nodded as we both walked in.

“Would you like anything? Coffee or tea?”

  “Cut the bullshit, Sophia.”

“Wait a second, why are you so hostile towards me? What have I done?”

“As if you didn’t know. Morgan told me what happened earlier. How can you call yourself a mother after everything you had done to him?”

“I really don’t know what you’re referring to, but I’m not going to talk to you when you have an attitude towards me.”

“I should have one towards you. You manipulated him into doing whatever the hell you wanted because you were too much of a coward bitch to do it yourself.”

“You need to leave, now!” Sophia yelled. She tried to go to the door, but I blocked her.

“No, you’re going to listen to me. I have seen a lot more with Morgan even before we got together. I seen the way he was towards people after what happened with Craig. I was finally able to show him how precious life can be before you screwed it all up again by dredging up the past. Everything that has happened from the time he killed Craig to now is your damn fault. How could you let him do that to himself when you knew you could had stopped it?”

“I don’t know what Morgan told you, but Craig’s murder was not intentional. I did not set Morgan up to kill him.”

“Really. You knew Morgan loved you with all of his heart and he would do anything for you. He saw what you were going through so he thought he was protecting you. You took advantage of that and used it so you wouldn’t have to get your hands dirty.”

“You know what little girl, I suggest you stop talking because you don’t know anything about what I went through. When Craig was murdered, a part of me died along with him because I loved him, but I knew he deserved it. I watched my son go through hell as he struggled with the fact that he murdered someone. So don’t come in here acting like you know everything when you don’t know shit about what was happening in this house.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Sophia, because Morgan was at our house almost every day because of the issues that were happening in here. So I know what he was going through. You might not have thought what was going on was affecting him, but it was. You were just too busy pleasing that piece of shit to ever realize that your son was hurting.”

  “Get out.” Sophia demanded.

“I used to like you. Hell, I even defended you when Morgan had these thoughts in his head about you; but after the conversations we had with Kyle’s mother and with Rick, I realized how weak you are. You’re not a woman. You’re just like Craig, a piece of shit. Hopefully when your time is up, you’ll be meeting him in hell.”

“I had about enough of your mouth. Get the hell out!” Sophia yelled as she shoved me. I was about to knock her out when Tamara came between us.

“Let’s go, Hayley.” She said while giving Sophia a dirty look.

“And don’t come back. If you do, I’ll have you arrested.”

I gave her the finger as I walked out of the house.

“That went well.” Tamara joked while going to the car.

I shook my head. Now, I knew I had to do what I can to convict her of Craig’s murder. No matter what, she will be the one going to prison.

  ***

Since I was in town, I figured I would pay a visit to my mom. I’m pretty sure she was up because of Ophelia, but I still called to let her know I was stopping by.

After the 20 minute drive, I approached the door and opened it with my key. Tamara and I walked in and saw my mom giving Ophelia a bottle.

“Hi, Mom.” I said as I bent down to kiss her. I looked at my little sister and smiled. This was the second time I’d seen her since she was born. We did come down the past weekend to see the two of them in the hospital. They arrived home just two days ago, but I knew my mom was still recuperating.

My mom smiled and acknowledged Tamara.

“Where’s Dad?” I asked and sat down.

“He went to the store to buy more diapers. I swear, this little girl can go through them in a couple of hours.”

I watched as my mom held Ophelia up to her shoulder to burp her. She gave me a concerned look.

“Now, why are you two here during the week? Is something up?”

I didn’t know if I wanted my mom to know about Morgan’s mom. The two are good friends, so she might not take the news too well.

  “I was visiting Sophia.”

“Why. Is everything okay with her? And why Morgan’s not with you two?”

“He wasn’t feeling well. Anyway, I talked to her about Craig’s murder.”

“Why? You knew she went through a lot after that ordeal.”

“She did, but not in the way you’re think
ing.”

“What does that supposed to mean?”

“There’s a lot you don’t know about Sophia McFarlane. I really don’t want to go into details, but I think it’s best if you keep your distance from her.”

“Really, Hayley? She’s one of my good friends. She’s harmless.”

“She’s far from that. To be honest, I don’t know what she’s capable of. There’s a lot going on and Morgan and I both believe she’s the reason for it.”

My mom looked worried as Tamara offered to take Ophelia from her. When she did, my mom came over to me and put a hand on my shoulder.

“I don’t want to bother you with all of this, especially since you just had a baby.”

“Baby girl, just because I had a child does not mean your feelings are not important. You’re still my daughter, so whatever’s going on, just tell me.”

I sighed. “I rather not talk about it right now, but I will tell you soon.”

“Okay, but you better tell me.”

  “I promise.”

My mom gave a tiny smile and rubbed my back. “So, how are things between you and Morgan since he’s been back?”

“Everything is good between us, it’s just all the skeletons that keep coming out of the closet are the problem. There is one thing I’m worried about, though.”

  “What’s that?”

“It’s about the guy I shot. What if that comes back to haunt me.”

My mom put me in her arms and I let out a breath. When I left the hospital, I did tell my parents about the shooting. Although they were devastated, they knew I did it to protect Morgan. My dad even suggested that we find a lawyer just in case, if I am arrested. To this day, no one still knows what I’d done, but I wasn’t ignoring it. Someone might know what happened, but just hasn’t come forward to confess it yet.

“Hales, whatever happens, we’ll get through it. It was self-defense; you were protecting someone, so the outcome might not be as bad as you think.”

“I really want to believe that, but I have a feeling it won’t end that way.”

“What are you saying? Please don’t tell me you’re going to turn yourself in.”
