Despite his own forays into London society, Uncle Warren had viewed her participation in any society whatsoever as frivolous. Not even the occasional protests from several ladies in the local parish could persuade him to change his mind. If anything, it made him grow more stubborn, and he’d intentionally neglected her social training.
Instead, he had focused on building her moral character. Each and every day started and ended with him subjugating them to stern morality lectures. Repeatedly, he’d threatened dire consequences if she and Edward didn’t heed the lessons he taught. The memory of those daily warnings made her contemplate her recent mistakes in detail.
No doubt, Uncle Warren would enjoy pointing out each of her transgressions over the past week with zealous fervor and furious outrage. A shiver shot down her spine, and she rubbed her arms to ease the chill bumps on her skin. There had never been a time when her uncle had relaxed his rules and morals to offer her or Edward love and affection. Then there had been the problem of Cousin Albert. Another shudder ripped through her, and she pushed Albert’s image back into the box where she kept all her bad memories.
