  “Are you okay?” he asked in a whisper as he looked down at her.

  She opened her eyes sand smiled. “Never better.”

  He smiled back at her and slowly climbed off the bed. He walked to the bathroom and cleaned himself off before he came back with a wet washcloth.

  “It’s cold,” he warned before he began cleaning her slowly. Even with the warning, she still flinched. Alex took his time cleaning her off before he carried her out of the play room to the bedroom. He then walked to the kitchen and grabbed two bottles of water from the fridge. “Here,” he said when he walked back to the bedroom. “You need to hydrate,” he added as he handed her a bottle of water. He gulped down the contents of the bottle and she did the same before he laid next to her. He cradled her in his arms and gently planted a soft kiss on her forehead.

  “Are you sure you are okay?” he asked as he held her. He couldn’t shake the thought that he had hurt her.

  “If I wasn’t, I’d tell you,” she said in a low voice before they both drifted off into a deep sleep.

  Emily didn’t know what time it was when she finally woke up. She rolled over and noticed that she was all alone in the bed. When she looked outside the window, she noticed that it was still dark outside. She got up from the bed and walked to the bathroom where she put on a bathrobe before she walked out to the living room. Alex smiled when he saw her. He had an open pizza box in front of him.

  “Hey,” he said.

  “Hey…oh my word, you are a godsend,” Emily said as she rushed to where he was and grabbed a slice. “I never thought ordinary pizza could taste so good,” she said, her eyes closed when she bit into her slice. Alex smiled. “I’m sorry…I’m just famished!” Emily said when she opened her eyes.

  “Oh trust me, I understand. Why do you think I ordered a pizza at midnight?” She looked at him.

  “Midnight? I could have sworn it was so much later than that.”

  “I know. But that’s just because we got to bed a little earlier than usual,” he said as he looked at her. She nodded and took another bite before she reached for another slice. “You might want to sit down seeing as we might be here for a while,” he said as he looked at her. It was not until then that Emily realized that she had been standing next to him all that time. There was a long silence for the next four or five minutes as the two ate. It was not until after she was done with her fourth slice that Emily finally lean back.

  “Had enough?” Alex asked.

  “Oh I so needed that,” she said in a low voice.

  “Great minds, huh?”

  “Great minds,” she echoed. She opened her mouth to speak but she just couldn’t bring herself to say what she was thinking. She looked at him and felt her cheeks flush.

  “Something on your mind Carter?” Alex asked as he looked at her.

  She wanted to nod, or simply say something but she just couldn’t. It was like she was suddenly dumbfounded. She looked at him and shrugged.

  “Come on, out with it,” he said.

  “When you took me back to bed, you said something,” she said. Alex nodded. “I just wanted to know…I guess I wanted to ask if…” she just couldn’t bring herself to say it. She looked up at him and suddenly realized that she was about to make a mistake. This was not a good idea, not at all. She got up and carried the almost empty pizza box to the kitchen leaving a stunned Alex behind.

  “At the risk of sounding like the slow one in the room, what is going on Emily?” he asked as he looked at her. She was now standing at the kitchen counter. He looked at her and she shook her head. “Em,” he said as he got up and walked up to where she was. She was trying as much as she could to avoid his line of sight. She reached for an overhead cabinet and pulled out a container. “Em, will you look at me?” Alex asked as she put the two pizza slices that had remained in the box.

  Emily placed the lid on the container and then walked to the refrigerator. She had just put the container in when he walked up to where she was. When she turned around after closing the refrigerator door, Alex pinned her against it. He put his finger on her chin and raised her face to look into her eyes.

  “Tell me what’s on your mind,” he said in a whisper.

  “You said that you loved me,” she finally said and Alex nodded.

  “I did,” he said.

  “Did you really mean it or were you just acting on account of what was happening to your body? Because if the latter was the case, I don't hold it against you. I totally understand,” she said.

  Alex smiled and took her face in his hands. He brought his head down and kissed her deeply.

  “It was not a mistake, Em. I said what I was feeling in my heart. What I have been feeling for months now,” he said in a low voice. “I do love you, like you wouldn’t believe,” he added before he kissed her again.

  She smiled when he pulled away.

  “That’s good…because…because I love you too,” she said shyly. “I didn’t want to say anything in case you didn’t feel the same.”

  “I loved you long before I knew how to even love myself,” he said making her blush. He then interlaced his fingers with hers and pinned her hands up above her head as he kissed her deeply.
