  *Possibly Hélène Cattanès (1894–1977), professor of French, Smith College, 1921–63; launched the Junior Year Abroad programme in 1925.

  *Being ‘pinned’ meant that a couple was in a serious, exclusive relationship. The typical progression was dating, being pinned, getting engaged, and then marriage. Often the man would give the woman his fraternity pin to wear.
