“You didn’t just say it—you hired a lawyer and filed the paperwork.”

“Well, that’s over now. I called my lawyer today and told her to recall it.” She glanced down at her watch. “As of about two hours ago, the motion was officially dismissed by the judge. We are no longer getting divorced.”

I nodded, measured my words. A lot of emotions came flooding to the surface, and I fought to contain them. The thought of being back home with Samantha was exciting and overwhelming. All I had ever wanted was for me and Debbie and Samantha to be back together again as one happy little family. I had grown up believing children deserved to have their father and mother under the same roof, being loved and cared for by both, and it had always been my intention to keep our family together.

I smiled down at Debbie. “Get out of here.”

Debbie’s face twisted in confusion. She tried to speak several times, but nothing came out. Finally, she managed, “What the hell did you just say?”

“I’m filing for divorce. Get out of here and don’t come back unless it’s to drop off Samantha.”

“You can’t divorce me!” Debbie’s face was blood-red, her voice shrill. “Who do you think you are?”

  “You need to leave and—”

A small—but hard—fist smashed against the left side of my face, jarred the broken bones in my face. I never saw it coming because of my swollen left eye. When I turned my head, I saw Debbie’s fist drawing back for a second punch. Before I could react, a flash of movement brushed past me and a startled Debbie flew onto her back, crying out in pain as she crashed to the concrete.

“He might let you get away with that,” Kristen said, glaring down at Debbie, “but I won’t!”

Tears of anger and embarrassment flowed down Debbie’s cheeks as she scrambled to her feet. She started to open her mouth, but Kristen took a step toward her and Debbie hurried to her Tahoe. When she drove off, she left most of the rubber from her rear tires in the parking lot.

  “Wow...um...holy shit!” I finally managed.

Kristen turned to face me, smiled. “I’ve been wanting to do that since last Monday night.”

I started to reply, but she pressed her body against mine and kissed me on the mouth. Her lips were moist and soft, but aggressive. After a long kiss, she tilted her head back, but kept her breasts pressed firmly against my chest. “See? It wasn’t the alcohol.”
