master.” Blake fake worshipped him.

Even Erin looked like she had enjoyed it. “You never told me about that.”

Jack winked. “I have to have some secrets left.”

“So you’re like the kid from the Sixth Sense?” Reece yawned and stretched. She looked at her watch. “Whoa, it got late quick. Happy Halloween.”

  Everyone checked the time.

  “Your right.” Erin agreed.

Pete shook his empty beer. “You guys want to crank this up all night?”

Erin shook her head and got off the couch. “Not tonight. Some of us have to work tomorrow. I’m off the bed.” She stretched and gave Jack an inquiring look.

  “I’m right behind you.”

Blake made a ‘your whipped’ gesture. They both ignored it.

Erin went off with Reece to set up the guest room for her.

“You guys going to be alright out here?” Jack asked the last two troopers.

  “We’re partying all night.”

“Right. Well if you need anything wait at least thirty minutes after I go to bed.”

“Pff. Thirty seconds. Tops.” Blake laughed.

“Night guys.” Jack left his two friends to their own demise. He walked outside to get his dog Zeus from the backyard.

Zeus was lying out, sleeping. He was chasing something in his dream world, barking softly at it.

Jack walked down his back steps and pet him awake. “Hey there buddy.”

Zeus began panting, licking his nose.

“You missed the best part of your story.” Jack heard from behind him.

“We’ll it is one thing when you’re a kid,” Jack said turning to the familiar apparition, “It’s another thing when you’re an adult.”

Adam’s translucent figure crossed his arms. He wasn’t smiling.

“So I told my best friend I saw a ghost when I was a kid and he remembered that after he died and he visits me every year. They’d love that at the loony bin.”

Adam’s ghostly figure shrugged. “It’s still a good story.” He was pausing for dramatic effort and added, “With a new ending.”

Jack turned his full attention on his old friend. “Oh? We’re not going to play chess this year?” Jack had set his old chess set outside just in case.

“Nope. I’m leaving and I’m not coming back. I’m going to the great beyond with all my business finished.” Adam laughed youthfully. He still appeared as though he were a teenager. “I figured out who had hit me and left me dying on the side of road. I scared him right into another car. That sucker is dead.”

  “Who was it?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.” Adam’s spirit began to fade. “I’ll tell Chester you told his story again. He still talks about how much fun you used to be when you were little. Anyway, I gotta go. See you on the other side.” Adam’s ghost saluted and vanished into thin air.

“See ya.” Jack smiled. His friend was finally at peace.

Erin jumped out the back door in the hurry. “Jack! Jack, you’re not going to believe this. Shannon called me. She was hysterical. She apologized for lying about why they didn’t make it. Greg was in a terrible car accident earlier tonight. The police said he swerved suddenly into oncoming traffic. I can’t think of what would make him do that. Jack... Jack, what is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
