Chapter One
Jayson “Jay” Brubaker
Growing up poor in Baltimore, I studied hard in school to get out of that. My mom worked hard at two, sometimes three jobs just to put food on the table. There wasn’t much left for anything else. I hated that my mom cried every night when my younger sister asked for things that she could never afford. Things like cable television and going to the movies. Nothing extravagant, but nonetheless they might as well have been. My father passed away in a freak accident at the textile factory where he worked and after that money was tighter than ever. I made it my life’s mission to get my mom and sister out of that run-down, crime-ridden neighborhood. I worked four jobs and put myself through college.
Somehow, I managed to graduate in three years instead of four. I was a natural at science and chemistry came easy to me. My senior project was a special bonding agent, but after I graduated is when it finally happened. Everything lined up and pretty quickly after that it all came together. I created the chemical bonding agent, Protect-All and sold it to the government. They use it to make the troops gear more durable. After that, I kept the company going making it usable by the general public, raking in more and more money. Seriously, this shit can patch a hole in your roof for pennies on the dollar. I was suddenly the richest man in Maryland, and everyone knew it. I set my mom, Irene, up in a condo in Washington DC and my sister, Serena, is running for Congress this year. She’s twenty-six and ready to change the world. I am sitting in the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport waiting for the first-class passengers to load. I am preparing for a meeting to sell an exorbitant amount of Protect-All to an airplane manufacturer. They have ideas for it. Normally, any one of my salespeople could make this sale, but the owner, Giuseppe Bianchi, personally requested me, so here I am. I am not one to turn down a multimillion-dollar deal.
You don’t get where I am in life without certain sacrifices. Most of those sacrifices come in the form of a social life, including women. Not one woman in my thirty-eight years has caught my attention for any long period of time. I haven’t been with a woman in probably ten years, maybe more. I don’t have the time or inclination to be with someone who is just after my wallet, so I don’t fucking bother.
“We are now boarding our first-class passengers as well as those passengers with children,” the gate agent says. I stand and hand my boarding pass the guy standing by the door. He scans and I walk down the jetway and onto the plane. The flight attendant looks at my ticket and directs me to my seat. I stow my carry on in the bin above the pod and sit down.
After twenty-five minutes, the doors close and the flight attendant stands in front of the aisle.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard Flight 2202 with nonstop service from Baltimore to Rome. We are currently first in line for take-off and are expected to be in the air in approximately five minutes. We ask that you please fasten your seatbelts at this time and secure all baggage underneath your seat or in the overhead compartments. We also ask that your seats and tray tables are in the upright position for take-off. Please turn off all personal electronic devices, including laptops and cell phones. Smoking is prohibited for the duration of the flight. Thank you for choosing Air Regal. We hope you enjoy your flight.”
She does her safety demonstration and we in the air before I know it.
My meeting is about an hour after I land, so I head over to the Bianchi headquarters. After we ink the deal, I head to the Rome Cavalieri resort on Via Alberto Cadlolo. Once I check-in and drop my bags off in my room, I decide I need a drink. It was a long flight. The lobby bar will suit me just fine.
“Business or pleasure,” the already too chatty for my taste’s bartender asks after I sit down. This is a hard question for me. Business brought me to Rome, but just the thought of some downtime has me staying a few extra days.
“Pleasure,” I say deciding that I’ve earned this. Instead of leaving right away as I would normally do, I decided to stay and sightsee a little bit. Everything in me tells me I need to be here in Rome, right now.
“What will you have, sir?”
“Whiskey, neat,” I respond curtly.
“Me too, please,” a voice to my left says. I didn’t even notice her sit down, but I do know she wasn’t there a second ago. It’s like she appeared out of thin air. Her sultry voice rockets through me causing me to slowly turn in that direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if my eyes bugged out of my head. She’s looking right at me. She’s stunning. Beyond gorgeous. Suddenly, my blood is pumping harder than it ever has before. I can actually feel it.
“Put on my tab,” I say never taking my eyes off of her cinnamon brown eyes that have little specks of hazel in them. I am hooked. “I am Jayson Brubaker, though my friends call me Jay. What is your name, Sunshine?”
“Not Sunshine, that’s for sure. Wendelin Thompson.” I shake her hand, because I have to touch her. I stifle a groan at the softness of her tanned skin.
“You are American?” I ask.
“Yes. I live in Washington, DC. You?”
“Baltimore,” I say.
“Well, well, well... We are practically neighbors,” she says, giggling a little. The bartender sets our drinks down. Reluctantly, I release her ha
nd. We both reach for our glasses. “To meeting new people,” she toasts.
“To meeting new people.” We clink our glasses together and while I sip the delicious amber colored nectar of the Gods, she gulps hers down in one sip. I raise my eyebrow toward her when she starts choking. I clap her on the back gently. “Not a whiskey drinker?” I ask, trying not to laugh.
“I think it needs some Splenda,” she says once she’s recovered. I can’t help chuckling at her reference from the old tv show, The Office. She smiles at me and I could swear my soul just gasped. Her genuine smile reaches her eyes. “But, um, no not really a whiskey drinker,” she says. I smile and nod gesturing for the bartender to come back over.
“You should order whatever you like,” I say.
“I’ll have some prosecco, please.”
“Excellent choice, signorina,” he says looking her up and down. I do growl then and place my hand on her forearm. It’s not a true claiming, not yet, but it will do.
After he drops the drink off, we continue our conversation.
“Are you married?” she asks.
“No. You?”
“No. No boyfriend either,” she offers.
“No girlfriend here.”
“What do you do?” she asks and I realize she has no idea who I am.
“I am a scientist,” I answer honestly. “You?”
“I am an editor for Grigsby Publishing. Not one of the big publishing houses but--”
“Do you love it?” I ask, cutting her off.
“I do. I really do.”
“Then nothing else matters,” I tell her.
“You know, you are right,” she says smiling that fucking smile that is going to be the death of me.
After two hours, and countless whiskeys for me and glasses of wine for her, she yawns, but tries to hide it.
“Are you staying in the hotel?” I ask.
“I am,” she replies. “Thankfully. I drank way too much, and I am jetlagged,” she says shrugging.
“I totally understand,” I say leaving a large tip on the bar. The check will be added to my room. “Allow me to escort you to your room.”
“I’d like that,” she says. Her voice sultrier than it was. We stand and with my hand on the small of her back, I lead her to the elevator.
While I don’t want this night to end, we both have a lot to drink and I am not that kind of man.
Fuck, it is going to be hard leaving her at her door.
Chapter Two
Wendelin “Winny” Thompson
Oh, my fuck, what am I doing? I ask myself. As I let Jayson lead me to the elevator. “You're letting a sexy as fuck older man with dreamy blue eyes take you to your hotel room, get your damn head out of those romance books you read and have a little fun with a sexy as fuck real-life man that you can inevitably compare any other man you ever date to.”
Fuck, my inner voice sounds a lot like my best friend, Lily, right now. Damn judgey hoe. True I am twenty-five and have never done anything remotely adventurous, but I am perfectly happy in my life. My inner voice snorts. Okay, so I’m not completely happy with my life.
I want adventure and love just like the kinds I read about in my books. The happily ever after kind where a man just sweeps you off of your feet. The minute I heard Jay’s deep baritone voice my knees almost buckled, and my pussy flooded. Oh god, his eyes are what really did me in. They are so dark blue they look like the midnight sky.
“What floor are you on Sunshine?” he asks, whispering against my ear causing me to shiver.
“I’m on five.” Damn, why does my voice sound so... breathless. He kisses my neck and I bite my lip to keep from moaning out loud.
“Perfect.” He hits the button. More people come on and then we are off. It gets a little crowded, so he steps behind me and wraps his arm around my waist, resting his hand on my hip pulling my back flat against his front. His hard cock pushes up against my ass and I can't help but push back against it. His hand tightens on my hip and he groans in my ear. It feels like forever before we get to my floor. When we do, he moves back and grabs my hand pulling me out of the elevator. “What room?”
“It’s at the end of the hall, 569.” The closer we get to my room my palms start to sweat and my mind keeps going one hundred miles an hour just like every time I get nervous. Fuck, I’m not quite sure I can do this. Do I tell him I’m a virgin or do I just let him find out? Should I really be having sex with a man I know nothing about? Fuck, I don’t even know if he wants to come in or if he was just dropping me off. “Um, do you want to come in?” I ask licking my bottom lip. When we get to my room, he brings my hand to his lips and kisses my knuckles. His dark eyes dilating.
“Not tonight, Sunshine,” he says taking a deep breath. “I am going to woo you first, Wendelin. I’ll be here in the morning at nine to pick you up. We are going to spend the day touring and getting to know each other better. I have two days to make you fall in love with me. Pack a bag and wear a bathing suit. I have a full day planned for us. I’ll see you tomorrow, baby. Sleep good,” he says in a deep voice. He kisses my knuckles one more time before turning and making his way back to the elevator.
Oh my God. When he gets in and turns around, I quickly duck into my room before he can see me standing there with my mouth hanging open. With the door shut, I book it to the bed and grab my phone. Luckily, the resort has free WIFI and I can just Facebook chat her without having to worry about paying an arm and a leg for a phone call because this is going to be a long ass fucking call. There is no way I am going to be able to sleep tonight knowing that the most beautiful man I have ever seen plans on making me fall in love with him.
“Lilly! You are not going to believe what the fuck just happened,” I yell the minute I see my best friend’s face pop up on the little screen.
“Bitch, I have been fucking trying to get ahold of you for the last forty-eight hours!” she yells back putting her face closer to the phone.
“Trust me, you will so forgive me after I tell you about the day that I have had.”
“I doubt it,” she huffs.
“Shut your hoe mouth and listen to me. So, I get on the plane from home here and I sat next to the nicest lady then what was supposed to be a non-stop flight has to stop. I ended up in London for two hours then I almost missed the connecting flight when I get on the new plan my seat buddy was a shit face. He was mean the whole time. When I finally get to Rome, I couldn’t get a taxi to the hotel I am staying at is thirty-six kilometers away. What the fuck are kilometers anyways? So I had to wait and then when I got to my hotel they lost my reservation and I had to show them all of the emails and shit so by the time I got into my room it was late and I really needed a drink,” I say taking a breath and lean closer to the phone. “Here is where my shit day turned into fucking magic. I went down to the hotel bar and there was this guy.”
“What guy? OhMiGod! Did you talk to some hot ass foreigners?” Her voice gets louder at the end.
“No,” I say dead panning knowing what I am doing to her. Her face falls and pouts.
“If he is old and you start telling me how sweet this little old man was to you, I am going to punch you,” she whines.
“Well… he is kinda on the older side and he was really sweet.” She growls and I laugh.
“Okay, okay. I can’t keep this from you, it's killing me. His name is Jay he is American. He’s is thirty-eight with the most amazing eyes I have ever seen. He has the start of this sexy as fuck gray in his beard and on the side of his head. He bought me drinks. We talked for a couple of hours. Oh my God, Lily. He is so hot and are you ready for this?”
“Tell me everything!”
“When we got to my hotel room, he kissed my knuckles and told me he wasn’t going to come in because he planned on me falling in love with him first.”
“You shut your hoe mouth! Did he really?” I nod my head grinning from ear to ear.
“If this shit isn’t from a fucking fairy tale, I don’t know what is.”<

“You have to let me write your love story. When is he going to pick you up in the morning? Does he live there or is he just on vacay? Oh my God, please don't move away from me! Well, I mean if you move to Rome, then I will just move there with you,” she squeals.
I am laughing so hard that I fall over on the bed. “He is picking me up at nine, so I have to get up at like seven to get ready. It's a damn good thing I let you talk me into getting my hoo-ha waxed before I came here.”
“See I told you. I always know best.” I raise my brow
“Mmmhmm.” She giggles.
“Yes, you heard me right. I know best.” We laugh and talk for an hour before I get off the phone and set my alarm after using the bathroom and brushing my teeth because we all know alcohol gives you ass-breath in the morning if you don't brush. I strip down and face plant on the bed.
I have a date with a sexy older man in the morning, and I can’t wait to see what he has planned for us.
Chapter Three
Jay
Two days to make her mine. Yeah, I got this. At exactly nine, I knock softly on her door. She throws her door open eagerly. Her white sundress is short. Too short for other men to see her this way, but I don’t want to scare her. Her legs seem endless and her tanned skin has my mouth watering. Be cool, I remind myself. This has to last the rest of our lives.
“Good morning, Sunshine. Have you eaten?” she shakes her head no, and I tsk. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You will need your strength today.”
