Havik: Warlord Brides (Warriors of Sangrin Book 9)

Thalia pressed her hand to the polished stone. The sun broke through the clouds, creating a sheen across the surface.

She stepped back and grabbed Havik’s hand. “One more,” she said.

Edward “Doc” Mitchell was buried in an old pre-Invasion cemetery, interred in a plot next to his wife, who preceded him by a decade. That surprised her. Doc never mentioned a wife. That her last year was the Invasion year spoke volumes. Doc kept his secrets and his pain to himself.

Thalia laid the second bouquet on the grave, atop the thin dusting of snow. “Don’t worry. They’re daisies. You always said roses were a waste of money.” She searched for the correct words. “I did it. I ran away and got a Mahdfel. His name’s Havik. Don’t roll your eyes. You’d like him.” She glanced at Havik, still miserable in the cold and stoically handsome in his misery. Snow fell silently.

“I’m sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye. Yeah, yeah. You’re too cool for goodbyes. Whatever. Nicky lost his shit after you died. He’s in prison now. He tried to sell me to human traffickers but, obviously, that didn’t turn out too well for him.” She gave a thin smile. “That’s what I’m doing now, trying to track down the fuckers who buy and sell people. It’s a big fucking universe out there. You were right about that. And it’s amazing. I love it. I love him.” She dusted off the layer of snow off the headstone. “I’m okay. We take care of each other. Thank you for being my friend.”

Havik stood behind her, his warmth a solid wall. “Thank you for being my friend,” she said, wrapping her arms around her husband. She loved him, and it was such a happy serendipity that she liked him too. “Let’s go home.”

  Afterword

Thank you for giving a grumpy alien a chance to redeem himself. When I started Vanessa’s story, Havik was 100% a jerk in my head. Then he muscled his way into the story and I realized there was so much to this guy that he needed a chance at his own Happily Ever After.

Once I started the book, I quickly realized how tricky that was to get it right. I hope I did justice to Thalia and Havik. Please join my Facebook group to discuss and give me a piece of your mind.

I’ve been at a loss at what to say. We’re living through strange days. I miss Sunday morning brunch and going out for coffee. I miss seeing family and friends. I have been very fortunate that no one in my immediate family or circle of friends have passed from this disease, but I know people who have been ill and have also lost family and loved ones.

Stay safe. Stay home (if you can) and read books.
