He moved to the other breast, licking and sucking.

  “Liam, I’m close,” she said.

He put one hand between her legs and rubbed over her clit in tiny circles. Her entire body clenched, and her pussy tightened around his cock. He thrust up, rocking into her body. She moaned and tossed her head back, coming on his cock. Her pussy contracted in waves, and every nerve in his brain lit up as he came.

He pumped his seed into her, gripping her hips as he spent himself fully.

Maybe that was the time they’d made his baby.

Her baby, too. She’s our mate, his dragon said. He didn’t seem to understand the surrogacy.

Yes. She’s our mate. Maybe one day he’d be able to tell her.

  Brynne

When Brynne woke up the following morning, she was tired and achy, despite having slept over eight hours. After their lovemaking, Liam had carried her to her bed and tucked her in. She’d slept well. Now there was a throbbing sensation between her legs. She rolled over to her stomach and tried to go back to sleep, but the motion only made the throb more persistent.

She and Liam had sex last night, but this wasn’t leftover soreness from overdoing it. This was different, and it was something she’d never felt before. As soon as her breasts touched the mattress, she hissed. Her breasts and nipples were sensitive, and she could barely stand having them pressed against the sheets. She flipped onto her back and realized her panties were wet.

She pushed herself up, and a wave of dizziness washed over her. She gripped the edge of the bed. She had an overwhelming urge to touch herself between her legs. For the first time in years, she didn’t have a demanding schedule. She had nowhere to be, so she lay back on the soft pillows and pushed her hand down into her panties.

She rubbed over her clit, but the feel of her own hand did nothing to satisfy the insistent throb. She needed to be filled. She needed to be fucked. She pulled her hand out of her pants and went into the bathroom. After a quick shower, she still felt weird, and now she felt feverish. A quick look in the mirror showed her cheeks were bright red.

Dragon shifters didn’t get sick. They didn’t get human illness, like strep throat, or the flu, or even the common cold. She pressed her hand against her stomach. There was heat radiating from her skin. The ache in her pussy grew so pronounced that she longed for a toy, or even better, Liam’s cock.

Liam. She needed to see him.

She had a vague memory of him coming into her room that morning and saying goodbye. She already had his cell number and his office number programmed into her phone, so she could call him anytime she wanted. No, she needed to see him in person. She could drive to him, and to her shock, he’d bought her a car to use while she was staying with him. In the garage there sat a brand-new four-door Lexus car, just for her. So she could go see him. She wasn’t stuck here, alone and aching for release.

She had enough of her mental faculties to realize that she couldn’t show up to his office naked, so she pulled on a bra, panties, and a thin dress even though it was November, hoping the bra was thick enough to hide that her nipples were hard, and it looked like they were going to stay that way.

Her red hair was still damp, but she didn’t have the patience to find a hair dryer at that moment. She dried it with a towel until another wave of arousal nearly sent her to her knees. A fiery burn shot through her veins. Liam. She had to get to him. He could help with this.

She couldn’t drive until she was a little more coherent. In the kitchen, she poured herself a giant glass of orange juice and sat down at the dining table. She gulped it down and felt a little more like herself. She wet a dish towel down with icy cold water and ran it all over her forehead and neck.

After about seven minutes of deep breaths and cool water, the most intense feelings had receded. She picked up her cell phone, wallet, and the keys Liam had given her, and she crawled into the Lexus. Even in November, the inside of the garage was warm.

That was going to take some getting used to. Back in Avon, it was probably snowing.

But you aren’t in Avon. You’re in Texas, and there are honest-to-God shifters here. It doesn’t matter that it’s seventy-five degrees and you’re sweating your ass off.

The leather inside the Lexus was cool against her heated skin. The interior of the car smelled fantastic. Apparently, the new car smell agreed with whatever was going on with her. Thankful for a brief reprieve from the overwhelming physical reactions she’d been having, she raised the garage door and carefully backed out.

As she navigated the roads, she was struck again by the extreme environmental differences between Colorado and Texas. The roads in Cedar Lake were flat, and they were straight. Every turn she took was at a right angle. There were no swooping hills or hair-raising curves, and every person she passed had on a t-shirt—no parkas or snow boots—which made sense because there was no snow.

She laughed out loud and then gripped the steering wheel, hoping she wasn’t becoming delirious again. She drove past all the stores and offices and homes with a laser focus on getting to Liam. Finally, she arrived. His office was red brick with a navy blue door. Even from the parking lot, she could feel him. He was right on the other side of the wall. Thank God he was inside and not in court. She got out of the car and was hit with another dizzy spell. Shit. She got right back in the car.

“Liam,” she said. There was no way he could have heard her. She leaned her head against the steering wheel and panted.

She could call him, but the phone seemed so far away. With her right hand, she reached for her purse, but before she could reach it, someone knocked on her window. She jumped about two feet in the air.

It was Liam. He was here.

He rapped on the glass again. “Brynne. What’s wrong?”

She rolled the window down. “I don’t know. I feel crazy, and all I could think about was getting to your office.”

“Shit,” he muttered. “Roll the window up.”

She smashed the button down, and the glass rolled up. In the next second, Liam was climbing into her car and closing the door. She felt his warm hand brush over her cheek.

  “Sweetheart. You’re in heat.”

She turned her head to the side. The leather steering wheel wasn’t nearly as cold as it had been a minute ago. “Heat?”

“Yes,” he said. “I’m going to drive you home.”

“I don’t want to be alone.”

“You’re not going to be alone.” He got out again and was back, and then he was lifting her and scooting her into the passenger seat, all without getting back out of the car.

“You’re strong. Like me. But stronger,” she mumbled.

Liam pulled out and started driving back. “Yeah, I guess I am.”

Her head lolled, but she got her eyes fixed on him. “What about your car?”

“It’ll be fine there for a few days. We just need to get you home.”

Brynne agreed. As soon as they were home, Liam closed the garage and bolted all the doors. He even turned on the alarm system, which she’d never seen him use before.

“Don’t you think that’s a little excessive?” she asked.

She never worried about locks or alarms when she lived alone in Colorado. There was no human, or even group of humans, that could harm her. There were no human weapons, outside of nuclear bombs, that could harm her, either. Security took a backseat, much to Nicolae’s horror. The vampires took security to the extreme. They were a little more vulnerable to physical harm than a dragon shifter.

When Liam turned to look at her, his eyes were glowing yellow. “No, I don’t think it’s excessive at all.” He pulled her close. “I can take care of any threat that comes our way, but I need to know they’re coming. The witches have never come to the States—that I know of—but I don’t want to be caught off guard by anyone.”

She lifted her chin. “I can take care of threats, too.”

“I know you can, but that’s not why we’re h
ere. We’re here because you are in heat.” He grabbed her around the waist and crushed his mouth against hers. “I need to fuck you and put a baby in you.”

“Yes. God, yes. Do it. I can’t think straight.”

He pulled her closer until her hips were flush against his. “Feel that?” He moved her hand to press against his straining erection.

She gripped his cock over his dress pants. “You’re so sexy in your suits,” she said. “You look like a model instead of a lawyer.”

“I’m glad you think so. I need you naked.” With one fluid motion, he stripped her dress off. “And you’re barely wearing anything at all, which is how I like it.”

“You too,” she said. “I don’t want to see you with a shirt on for the next week. Or pants.”

“I can work with that,” he said. He lifted her into his arms in a bridal carry and charged through the house, straight to his bedroom. “I want you from behind this time.” He put his palm on her backside and rubbed all over.

  “Yes,” she said, begging now.

He sat her on her feet next to the bed and let his eyes rake over her delectable body one more time. Then he spun her around and pushed her forward on the bed. He stripped off his suit and let it fall directly on the floor.

Her feet were flat on the floor and her hips were flush against the mattress. “Spread your legs,” he said. He knelt down behind her. “I need to see this pussy.”

She rolled her hips, trying to gain friction from the bed.

“Stop that,” he said. “I’ll be the one that makes you come, not this bed.”

She groaned, desperate with need. “Then do it,” she said. “Don’t make me wait anymore, please.”

He pushed her legs out until she was standing further than shoulder width apart. He pressed his tongue directly into her pussy. When she cried out, he replaced his tongue with two fingers. “This pussy is ripe,” he said. “It needs to be bred.”

“Yes. Please.” That was exactly what she wanted. “Breed me. Put a baby in me.”

With her breasts pushed flat against the bed, her nipples tingled from the stimulation. She managed to get her hands under her chest so that she could squeeze her own nipples. As Liam worked his fingers in and out of her body, her pussy clenched, ready to come.

With a gentle force, he smacked his open hand across her bottom. “Don’t come. You’ll come with my seed inside you. That’s how we’ll make a baby.”

She cried out and bit down on her lip so hard that she tasted blood. “Make it soon, then. I can’t wait.”

With a sudden motion, he was behind her, and he was shoving his hard cock into her body. The relief she felt was instantaneous. She was full; she was complete.

  Liam

During Brynne’s heat, a haze had taken over Liam’s mind as well as his body. He remembered that part of a shifter couple being in heat—the male could become just as hyper-focused on mating and creating a hatchling as the female.

He was glad he’d locked the doors while he was still clear-headed.

Thank God Liam had found a colleague to take over for a week while he stayed with Brynne during her heat. His parents had been done with their child-raising years by the time he was ten, so he didn’t have clear memories of them having heats.

Brynne had said she’d never had one before, but now that she’d been in his home for just a few days, his presence had triggered her heat. He had no idea if that was significant or not, beyond the fact that she was already his mate. Surely it meant they were compatible. Maybe it meant they would make a baby easily, although he still did not look forward to the day that she would leave.

  He texted his brothers.

“Not sure how it happened, but my time with Brynne has triggered her heat. I have a colleague taking over the office work, and everything else can wait. Obviously, I’ll miss our lake trip this weekend. I’ll catch you on the next one.”

He got some crude GIFs in return and a few good-luck texts, and then Quinn asked if they needed anything dropped off. Liam was about to ask him to pick up some ribs and ham from the deli, but then he realized he didn’t want Quinn, or any of his brothers for that matter, anywhere near Brynne while she was in heat.

His car would just have to stay at the office. As he’d told Brynne, the car was the last thing he cared about. He’d been running on instinct when she showed up at his office because all he could think about was getting Brynne alone, away from any male shifters. Other than his brothers, who would know better than to come near her, there were no male shifters in Cedar Lake. But that didn’t matter—Liam’s primal instincts were in overdrive.

Back in their clan in Ireland, the couple who was experiencing the heat together sequestered themselves in a faraway cave. They didn’t stay in the middle of the village and flaunt their scent. They made sure to distance themselves.

A mated female in heat shouldn’t attract any males, but Brynne wasn’t mated. Quinn was, but Juliana was human. What if he scented Brynne? It sounded ludicrous even in his own head, but Liam wasn’t taking any chances, so he told his brothers he had plenty of groceries. If he ran out, then he’d hire a human to deliver whatever they needed.

He would take care of his mate now. He would give her what she needed.

  Brynne

After the heat ended, Brynne slept for two days straight. Liam stayed at the house and worked from home, although he still seemed more sluggish than usual. Eventually, they were both back to normal, and Liam went back to work, although he seemed reluctant to leave her.

Brynne used her time at home to research what pregnancy was like for humans, even though it might not apply to her. She also got to know Clara and Juliana better. Clara was a teacher who was currently staying at home with her kids. Juliana was an accountant who was currently working part-time after her baby had been born. Both of them were happy to tell Brynne all about their pregnancies. They had both breastfed their babies, which made Brynne wonder if she should stay an extra three to six months after the hatchling was born so that she could breastfeed the baby.

Two weeks went by, and she had plenty to fill her days. She spent the evenings exploring Cedar Lake with Liam. Sometimes, he acted more like a boyfriend or doting husband then someone who had hired her as a surrogate to carry his baby, but she decided to enjoy the attention while she could.

Fourteen days after her heat ended, her stomach felt a little bit queasy. Could that be it? Could she be carrying Liam’s child already? He’d certainly done his best to get her pregnant during the heat, and she’d enjoyed the hell out of it—every second.

She’d heard from both Juliana and Clara that they used pregnancy tests from the pharmacy, and the results had been correct, so she knew the tests worked with humans who were pregnant with little shifters. They were both human, though, so could a test work with a shifter? She supposed it was worth a try. On the fifteenth day after her heat ended, she took the Lexus to the grocery store and bought a pregnancy test. She bought cereal and milk just to make sure the test box wasn’t glaringly obvious in case she ran into one of Liam‘s family members.

Brynne wondered if it was better to let Liam know she was taking the test and let him be there for the results. That hadn’t been in the contract. It might be nice to surprise him, too.

She read the instructions and then took the test. She waited five minutes and then looked down at the little window on the stick. There was a pink positive sign—she was pregnant.

Maybe she could convince Quinn to give her an ultrasound in a few weeks so that they could get a picture of the baby. She knew she wouldn’t need traditional prenatal care, but an ultrasound would be nice. Liam might want one to put one in the baby book.

Before Liam got home from work, she scoured the internet, looking for cute ways to tell him she was pregnant. Just because she was a surrogate and being paid to carry this baby didn’t mean they shouldn’t have the same cute announcements that everyone else did.

>   The baby would likely be born next August. On a message board for pregnancy announcements, she found a cute picture of a row of pairs of flip-flops. There was a dad set of flip-flops, and a mom set of flip-flops, and a baby set of flip-flops, and underneath you were supposed to write the date when the baby was joining the family. She found a picture with just the dad flip-flops and the baby flip-flops, and underneath, she wrote in her best handwriting, “Daddy,” and “Baby Murphy,” due next August.

She took a picture of the positive pregnancy test just in case he wanted to keep it. She drank a big glass of water, ate a salad, and sat down to wait for Liam to arrive. When he got home, he instantly stopped and scented the air.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Well, something smells different. You always smell like strawberries and vanilla. But now there’s a new scent.” He dropped his briefcase and kept his nose in the air. “Did you cook something different? Or get a new perfume?“

“What’s it smell like?” she asked, trying to hide her giddy smile.

  “Like sugar.”

Was he purposefully obtuse? “Why don’t you come and sit down at the kitchen table?“

He sat down. “Is it bad news?”

“No, it’s the opposite.“ She smiled at him. In her hand, she had the photo card of the flip-flops to show him. “Think about why there might be a new scent in the house.”

Liam’s mouth dropped open. “Oh my God! Are you pregnant?”

She nodded vigorously. “The heat worked. It did its job.”

He jumped up from the table, scooped her into his arms, and spun her around. He put her down abruptly. “Sorry, did that make you dizzy? It made Clara really sick at her stomach if Kellan spun her around at all.”

“No. I’m fine.” She handed him the card she’d made.
