Jackson dodged easily, suppressing a laugh.
“No.” She pointed a finger at his chest. “I’m not giving you my dirty panties.”
“That’s all right. I can get them out of the laundry basket later.”
“Ew, Jackson,” she said, wrinkling her nose. “You don’t seriously have a stinky panty fetish do you?”
“Would you still love me if I did?”
“Of course,” she said, without a moment’s hesitation, making his heart feel a little lighter even though he was only teasing. “But it would take some getting used to. I’m not accustomed to sharing that part of my life with anyone but the washing machine.”
He reached across the table, taking her hand and lifting it to his mouth. “I’m kidding.” He kissed the tips of her fingers one by one, loving the way she flushed in response. “I have no designs on your panties, just the woman who wears them.”
She curled her fingers, giving his palm a squeeze. “Harley’s going to be okay, right?”
“I think so,” Jackson said, knowing he had no choice but to be honest with her. They didn’t do lies or secrets, not even to spare each other pain. “I asked Clay not to hurt her and he said he wouldn’t, but I haven’t seen the man in years. I don’t know whether he’s still the kind to tell the truth.”
Hannah cocked her head. “You did? Really? You asked him not to hurt her?”
“I knew you would want me to.”
She sighed. “You are my favorite husband I’ve ever had.”
“I’m the only husband you’ve ever had,” he said, rising from his chair. “And the only one you’re going to have. Come get in the water with me.”
“What about dinner?” she asked, but she was already standing beside him, letting him lead her down the steps toward the beach.
“Dinner will keep. The sunset won’t and I want to fuck you in the waves with the sun in your hair.”
And so he did and it was even better than the last time he’d made love to his wife because every day with Hannah was better than the last, every moment more priceless than the one before.
She was all the proof he needed to believe that life was beautiful, nearly as beautiful as the woman in his arms.
