  “There! Charge it!” he shouted.

  I was closest to the lever and begin to pump it up and down as fast as I could. Finally, the light came on. “Charged!”

  Commander Vycon Dase punched in the combination of buttons, and we looked out the window as the shield suddenly appeared. We shouted in celebration. But there were many Waysaw ships inside the dome. But now that they were trapped; they were like fish in a barrel. We watched as our battalions, both Earth and Grantsions, took them out.

  “Look at that! The rest of the Waysaw are retreating!” Commander Vycon Dase shouted.

  A few minutes later, it was all over. We had defeated them, and the rest had retreated out of Earth's atmosphere.

  Chapter Fourteen

  COMMANDER VYCON DASE

  When I saw Nicole crouched down against that truck trying to evade fire, something sparked inside of me. I no longer cared for my own safety. I had to get to her at all costs. I landed the landspeeder as close to her as I could without drawing attention. I did not want to cause any Waysaw to fire on the landspeeder near her.   “I understand. I was in shock. You don't understand at that moment I felt pressure to choose. I was having to choose between the loyalty to my own race.   “Oh, Commander, it makes me so happy to hear you say that. I have felt so alone. I understand your reasoning. I have also betrayed the human race by being with you and becoming pregnant. But when you abandoned me, I thought I would have to do this alone forever and face the consequences of a hybrid alien baby alone. It was detrimental. I could not handle it.”

  “I am sorry that I have put you through that. It was wrong. I admit it. Please, will you give me another chance? Let the father of this child, let me be with you. We will get through this together, no matter what it takes. Even if we have to leave Earth and leave Anvin, we will find another place where we will be accepted. Where our child will be accepted.”

  I pulled her to me and hugged her. It was then that we noticed the soldiers were watching us, confused.

  “Come, let’s get out of here,” I said pulling her outside.

  “We can't leave; we have to help,” Nicole said.

  I was astounded by her big heart and the fact that she wanted to help the injured. She quickly moved away from me and went to a Grantsion lying on the ground with an injury to his leg. She immediately went to work on him.

  “I'll see what I can do over here,” I said to her as I moved to the next injured person.

  We spent the next few hours helping the injured get inside to the medical areas. We helped with the aftermath and devastation. I liked watching Nicole be focused and take care of others. She was going to make an astounding mother. She was good at nurturing and calming people. I guessed that's why she was hired to defuse tensions between the humans and the Zenkians.   Before long, it was the time for the sun to set.

  “I'm exhausted,” Nicole said.

  “I understand. We have both been through a lot today, but you have been through so much. Not only physically, with this fight, but emotionally with my abandonment of you. I cannot tell you enough how sorry I am. I will repeat my apology forever,” I said to her.

  “Oh, Commander, do not worry about it. You will make it up to me soon. I promise,” she said playfully.

  “I cannot wait to hear how,” I said. “But for now, let's find you a shower and a bed to rest in,” I said to her.

  “I have a room. It is where I have been staying; I hope it is still there,” she said.

  We walked around to the outskirts of the main buildings. There was a small row of cottages; it was the same that I had stayed in when I was at the mine before.

  “This one,” she said as she typed in the code on the door. The door opened.

  “I am going to get in the shower,” she said.

  “I am going to find us some food and bring it back here. You will be fine alone?”

  “Yes, as long as you are truly coming back,” she said with sadness in her eyes.

  My heart went out to her. I understood why she did not trust me. I had been a fool.

  I pulled her close to me. “I promise upon my death that I will return. I will never leave you alone ever again. We are in this together,” I said and then pulled her to me giving her a deep kiss.

  She smiled and then walked over to the kitchen area and poured herself some water. I watched her as she drank before walking out and closing the door behind me. I left and went to the communal kitchen areas and piled a tray with food. She would be very tired, and she had my child to feed, and I was hungry as well. I carried the tray back to the small cottage.

  Chapter Fifteen

Even when it was down, it wasn't down long enough for the Waysaw to defeat us. They needed to defeat the soldiers guarding this mine in order to take the time to quarry it. I was glad that there were not pallets of copper sitting around that they could easily take. No, this mine had become inactive, and if they wanted the copper, they would have to mine for it. It would take a long time. That was part of our defense system. They couldn't just take from us anymore; they had to work for it. Which meant they would have to defeat the forces and hold them off to give them the time to do that.

  I helped in the medical center as much as I could. The commander helped with the battalions, both the Earth and Grantsion. We worked separately, so as not to start any rumors. But that night, he came to my cottage.

  “That too. Because of this, I am wary about returning to the base,” he said.

  “I am too, but I guess that we must at some point,” I said.

  “Yes, but before we do,” he said as he looked around. He slowed down. He veered off to the right and toward a small outcroping of boulders.
