“What the fuck, Slick!” I said, punching him in the arm.

  “I know, man, damn.”

“You just can’t stop fucking up, huh?” Ace said with disappointment clear in his face.

“I was on the road to getting my shit together, ya’ll, but I guarantee that China’s baby is NOT mine. I don’t fuck these hoes raw and I flush my condoms myself.”

“Well, why didn’t you tell her that?!”

“Man, the damage was already done.”

“What you looking at?” Slick asked me as I continued to stare, making sure I saw what I thought I was seeing.

I saw Ace arguing with my mother and Mr. Kennith.

“Why are ya’ll here?” I walked over and asked.

“I don’t like how you neglected us for a boyfriend,” my mother said. She looked bad with dirty clothes on and track marks in her arms.

“What the fuck have you allowed him to get you into, mom?”

“That ain’t none of your business, bitch,” Kennith said.

As soon as the ‘bi-‘ left his mouth, Ace was all over him whooping his ass, and you know Slick was right behind him.

  “STOP! Ya’ll don’t kill him!”

I was so glad Mrs. Camila had put the girls down for a nap a few minutes ago. Mr. Mark ran from around the corner with this gun drawn but it was too late, Kennith was already pointing his gun at Ace. My heart started beating fast and I ran, pushing Ace out of the way and taking two bullets to the stomach.

The last thing I heard was, “She’s not breathing!” before I blacked out.

  Gena

I was driving to Kay’s house deep in thought. It was crazy how you could give a nigga your heart, mind, body and soul and it still wasn’t enough. I guess that’s where we go wrong as women. We give men things that they are not willing to give to us and they take our love and dedication for granted.

I did any and everything to make this nigga happy and still ended up getting the short end of the stick. What kinda shit is that? I’d been through one bad relationship and I saw this one going down the drain right behind it. How did I let it get this far? Am I really that bad?

I felt the warm tears running down my face. I heard a car horn snapping me out of my thoughts and I tried to swerve out of the way of the truck, but it was too late…

  Epilogue

The ambulance came and got Rayna while Ace and everybody else was freaking out. She was losing too much blood and the paramedics were trying their best to get a heartbeat back. After the third shock to her heart, they finally got a heartbeat back but it still wasn’t looking good. They got her to the hospital and took her back into emergency surgery while Ace and Slick waited in the waiting room. Slick was trying to keep Ace calm but he was freaking out himself because nobody could reach Gena.

“I keep calling Gena and it’s going straight to voicemail. Gena’s phone is going straight to voicemail.”

Ace picked his hands up out of his hands. “She probably just upset, dawg. Give her some time,” he said, trying to get his feelings in check within his own situation.

“I figured the same thing but Gena never turns her phone off when Kenyah is away from her. No matter what.” He sat down, looking around until he saw the emergency room doors open and a stretcher enter. He looked closer and realized the woman looked familiar. “Oh shit, Ace, that’s Gena!”

They both ran in the direction of the stretcher trying to notify them that they were her family.

Kay walked into the hospital going after the stretcher as well. The accident had happened down the street from his house and he’d hopped in the ambulance when he realized that it was Gena. He had told her to pull over and gather herself before coming to his house but she didn’t listen. As soon as he was about to talk to one of the paramedics, he met eyes with Slick.

“What the fuck you doing following her stretcher, nigga?” Slick asked him and all hell broke loose in the hospital. Security came out and settled everything down, along with Ace’s parents who had the sleeping girls in a double stroller.

Gena and Rayna continued to fight for their lives and the doctors felt that Ace and Slick should be prepared for the worst because it didn’t look good for either of them...

“The family of Ragena Houston?” they all got up. “Hello, Ragena has suffered from a traumatic brain injury due to the impact. We had to perform CPR on her and we got her breathing again. Although she is suffering from some bradycardia, which means her heart is beating rather slowly. After we are able to improve that, we will be able to allow you to see her and discuss other issues. As of now, we have her put into an induced coma to allow her brain to rest and regain function, and also to lower the risk of swelling.”

“The family of Rayna Kingston?” The doctor called and they continued to stand there. He called her name again.

  “That’s us,” they said.

“The girls are actually best friends, more like sisters,” Ace and Slick explained to the doctor at the same time, not realizing they were both talking over each other. They just wanted the doctor to get to the point.

“Oh ok,” the doctor said. “Well, Mr. Rowland, I’m sorry to tell you that we did all we could but…”
