“That’s not—”
“To be a slave of the king….”
Christopher’s eyes narrowed. Finally, he began to understand what Melusine was and why she was here. And he remembered, too, the King he served. To be His slave, well, that was no insult. It was an honor, a noble title he wasn’t even worthy to hold.
“Get out of here, Melusine.”
“No!”
He gritted his teeth and steeled himself. “Don’t make me throw you out!”
“You don’t have the power, Christopher,” she taunted him. “Not anymore. Not without Kaym. Not without me.”
“Maybe not, but I know who does.” He looked up at the ceiling. “Lord Jesus, would You help me out here, please.”
In immediate answer to his prayer, Mariel materialized, and the flames of her sword were like a candle compared to the righteous bonfire burning in her eyes. Melusine fell back before Mariel’s furious onslaught, spitting and cursing, but clearly overmatched. Unable to stand before the angry Guardian, Melusine shot Christopher a disgusted look, then spread her dark wings and flew through the glass of the closed window.
“Hey, thanks,” Christopher said, delighted to see his beautiful Guardian.
“You’re welcome,” Mariel replied, but her level gaze made it clear that at least some of her anger was reserved for him. “She’ll be back, you know, and if you’re going to serve Lord Jesus as you promised, you need to arm yourself against her and the rest of the Fallen.”
“How do I do that?”
“Read His Word. Surround yourself with believers. Learn from others who serve the Lord. Exercise your gifts, that you may serve Him better than before.” She frowned. “And you cannot do any of these things if you’re consumed with worry about what others think of you.”
Christopher bowed his head, ashamed.
“I understand. I’m sorry.”
She kissed the top of his head, then rumpled his hair and laughed.
“If you mean that, then you’ve taken another step on the pathway to righteousness, Christopher.”
Mariel began to glow, and as the glow brightened, her outline began to shimmer and fade.
“Wait, where are you going? You can’t leave me!”
He could already see burgundy-and-blue wallpaper through her increasingly translucent form, but the white flash of her smile was unmistakable.
“Don’t be afraid, Christopher. You may not always see me, but I’ll be with you, always.”
Beaded sweat was gleaming from the big music leader’s shaved head, and the church band was well into its fourth or fifth song when Jami felt someone nudge her side.
“Hey, got any room here?”
“Christopher!” Jami impulsively reached out and hugged her brother, and surprisingly, he did not stiffen uncomfortably or push her away. “You came after all!”
“Yeah, well, it’s hard to be a warrior all by yourself, don’t you think?”
Jami’s heart was too full of joy to speak, so she only smiled back at him.
“Hey, look, you guys!” Holli exclaimed happily. “There’s, like, an army of angels all around this place!”
Jami glanced around the huge space of the gymnasium. Without her sister’s gift of sight, she did not see anything at first, but then a flicker of flames and white feathers caught the corner of her eye, and for a moment she glimpsed Paulus, Aliel, Khasar, Jhofor, Mariel, and hundreds of other angels, all clapping their hands, dancing, and singing in joyful harmony with the human worshippers.
Paulus met her eyes and winked at her, once, then he and the rest of the Divine host disappeared from her sight. But she had seen, and she understood that Prince Michael had spoken true; they were not alone and they would not be overcome.
