“I know.” Sunny could barely speak through the tears clogging her throat. “And even while I was living in fear of the future, I loved you more than my own life.”

“I know.” Smiling, he returned his attention to the stone, to read aloud the dates noted beneath the side-by-side names. His voice fading on the sultry air, he tilted his head to smile once again at her.

“We enjoyed a long life together.”

“We’d have enjoyed it more if I had had the courage to trust you, your faith in the future, and given you the child I knew you so desperately longed for.”

“No, love,” he said, squeezing her hand in reassurance. “I wanted a child, yes, but my deepest desire then, as now, was for your well-being and happiness.”

“Oh, Adam,” Sunny cried on a pending sob. “I am happy, happy I found you again, happy to be carrying your child, so happy and so wildly in love with you.”

With utter disregard for the curious eyes that might observe them, Adam drew her into his arms, tenderly careful of the precious burden she carried.

And there, in full view of God and man, Adam gave her the gift of his total acceptance.

“I love you, whoever you are, whoever you may be,” he whispered. “Through all our seasons past, and all our seasons yet to come. I will love you.”
