Salvaging His Soul: Trident Security Book 8

Her head rocked back and forth on the pillow. “I-I don’t know; I’d have to check the calendar I keep in my purse. I think Harper has it in the waiting room. My period’s always been irregular, and every once in a while, I skip a month, but never more than that.”
“Okay. So, four to six weeks, approximately?”
Fancy thought for a moment and said, “No, I’d say six to eight.”
“Even better. I’m going to send you for an ultrasound to confirm everything is fine, which I’m pretty sure it is. Then we’ll have a better idea of how far along you are. Once that’s done, and you’re rehydrated, I’ll release you on one condition—take care of yourself and don’t stress too much over the wedding. It’s supposed to be one of the best days of your life, so enjoy it.”
Brody stood and shook the man’s hand again. “Don’t worry, Doc. I’ll make sure she relaxes, even if we have to elope.”
Grinning, Fancy swatted his arm. “Don’t say that. We’ll have over two hundred people mad at us.”
“I don’t care, sweetness. Let them be mad. You and . . . and our . . . holy shit.” He shook his head in disbelief. “You and our baby are all that matters.”
The doctor slapped his shoulder on the way out. “Congratulations. Let me go order the ultrasound.”
Turning back to Fancy, Brody just stared at her. She cocked her head to the side. “Are you happy? I mean, we didn’t expect this.”
“Happy? I’m freaking ecstatic. And I’m trying not to faint, ʼcause there’s not enough room on the cot for both of us.” A salacious smile spread across his face. “Well, unless one of us is on top.” Leaning down, he brushed his lips across hers. “I love you, Fancy-girl. You’ve made me the happiest man on Earth. And after we seal the deal on Saturday, we’ll start picking out baby names, okay?”
Stepping down from the back porch of the main house, Fancy followed her seven bridesmaids, two junior bridesmaids, and two flower girls to the gate leading into the pasture. Violin music floated through the air as the wedding guests all turned to watch the group approach. Everything was perfect. Their families and friends had worked hard to make sure everything was just right for their special day. Brody hadn’t let her lift a finger since she’d been released from the hospital, telling everyone it was doctor’s orders. After their initial shock at her pregnancy, the expecting couple had decided to wait until the reception to announce it to everyone. It’d been hard not to give it away over the past two days.
If anyone had told Fancy three years ago that she’d one day overcome her grief about losing Patrick and their baby, she wouldn’t have agreed. But time and a special man, who was about to give her his last name, had brought her back to the land of the living. Brody had never made her feel as if her first husband had never existed. In fact, he’d always encouraged her to talk about Patrick and their life together. Most men she knew wouldn’t have been confident enough in themselves to accept that a part of her heart would always belong to the deceased man, but not Brody Evans. Her fiancé had told her he was grateful for every day she’d had with Patrick since it had molded her into the woman he’d fallen in love with.
Stopping at the gate, she waited while her Aunt Denise made sure there was a certain amount of spacing between the attendants as they walked down the aisle. Fancy forced herself not to peek around everyone to see Brody. She wanted to wait until she had an unobstructed view of him. Instead, she glanced around at the guests sitting on the rows of hay bales. So many members of his and her families, their individual friends, mutual friends, and co-workers would bear witness to their nuptials. Some of those who couldn’t attend had Skyped in their best wishes over the past two days, including the Omega Team, TS West Team, Bea “Mic” Michaels and her team in Scotland, and Jase Atwood and his girlfriend Brie in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the FBI Larry Keon, King Rajeemh and Queen Azhar of Timasur, along with Princess Tahira and Prince Raj, and several others had phoned to wish the couple well.
She’d been thrilled to see her father when he’d arrived yesterday. There had been lots of hugging and tears, with repeated apologies from him for not being a major part of her life before now. He promised that was going to change, but Fancy knew it was going to be a struggle for both of them after so much lost time. Her half-sister Natalie had been shy at first, but she’d quickly warmed up thanks to Jenn, Alyssa, and Brody’s teenage nieces and nephews. She was even talking about applying to colleges in Florida so she and Fancy could get to know each other better.
In front of Fancy, Harper, the matron of honor, was starting her walk up the aisle. Stepping over, Aunt Denise had tears in her eyes as she said, “You look gorgeous, Fancy. Brody’s a lucky man.”
And Fancy was the lucky woman he’d fallen in love with. When the music changed to the wedding march, her aunt moved away and Fancy’s gaze went to her very-soon-to-be husband. He looked mouthwatering in his Navy whites standing in front of the flower-covered trellis with his groomsmen lined up next to him. He grinned as he stared lovingly and possessively at her, making her feel like the most beautiful woman on Earth. The ivory, tulle and lace dress she’d chosen had a country flair to it, and her ivory, vintage-style boots complemented it. A friend of Elise’s had come earlier to style Fancy’s hair into a romantic updo, with bits of baby’s breath, to complete the look and show off her white gold collar with its diamond and ruby baguettes. While many people in attendance didn’t understand its significance, those who did knew it meant she’d belonged to Brody long before they’d gotten to this point when they’d make it legal. Today was just the proverbial icing on the cake.
Taking a deep breath, she put one foot in front of the other and slowly approached her future—one that included the little life growing inside her. Through her gaze, Fancy let Brody see all the love in her heart and felt his in return. When she reached the end of the aisle, he stepped forward, took her hand, and kissed her knuckles, his eyes never leaving hers. “Hey there, sweetness. Fancy meeting you here. You wouldn’t happen to be here to marry me, would you?”
Her smile spread, and she gave him a coy look. “Maybe. You might want to hurry, though, before I change my mind.”
“Well, then, let’s seal the deal and get this show on the road.”
