After their bags were loaded into their cars, Jennifer sighed with relief. Pulling out of the driveway with Sarah in her own car behind her gave her a sense of security she hadn’t expected. She did have dibs on the next few housesitting jobs Mark had, but she wasn’t sure she’d take them. She’d decide when she had to. Until then, she’d just be happy to get back to college life.
The sun shone as they drove and they made a pit stop for a drink and a candy bar along the way. The journey was thankfully uneventful and finally they made it to their family home. Jennifer smiled brightly as her extended family ran out to meet them.
Tradition was taking over and Jennifer was glad she wouldn’t miss it. A huge potluck meal with her dad and uncles manning the grill would keep them occupied for a while. They’d gather around picnic tables in her parent’s huge backyard and tell jokes and stories until it was time to do the dishes.

The moon had risen when they all settled down around the flames. Uncle Randy was making a second round of s’mores for anyone who still had a craving. He ended up being too busy to do much drinking.
“Ghost story time,” shouted her dad. Everyone looked around, waiting for someone to start. After a moment, Jennifer raised her hand.
“Okay. I have one you’re not going to believe. It was long, long ago. Before the Civil War even started, a doctor lived with his wife and two children in a house called Falcon Manor. It was a grand house with two stories and a basement.”
All eyes were on Jennifer as she continued. The flames casting long shadows flickering all around them.
“And the doctor was well respected, though he carried a secret…”
