Happy Accident

She turned to go inside.
“He left everything to Connor,” Chad’s mother called out.
Kayla glanced over her shoulder. “Keep it, my son doesn’t want it.” She slammed the front door behind her and leaned against the wood as she closed her eyes.
Hands settled on her shoulders and a soft mouth settled over hers.
“You handled that well.” Rowan sighed.
“Why?” She shook her head. “Why would they even try?”
He held onto her while her son’s laughter sounded from the next room.
The following days, things returned to normal. Instead of moving their things into her mother’s house, they moved across the street into Rowan’s place.
Her mother continued to make improvements and they had actually had dinner with her and Gary. It was kind of nice seeing her mother blush when a man reached up and took her hand in his.
She couldn’t remember a time when her father had treated her mother with such kindness.
Crystal had sent her computer to a specialist to see if they could salvage the hard drive. It was unfortunate that it had been a newer all-in-one model. If they were lucky, the bullet would have missed the hard drive.
Until then, Kayla was back in the front of the store, working her regular shifts. It was nice, having her days free with her son again. She took him all around Silver Cove and showed him the things she’d enjoyed as a kid.
She’d received a large package from a lawyer in Boston, which she had turned over to her own lawyer in town, someone that Rowan knew.
She’d been afraid that the Collinses were going to fight for custody, but instead, her lawyer had informed her that they had put Connor’s money into a trust fund, which he could utilize once he reached twenty-three years old.
Almost a month after the incident, she came home one night to the house and it was dark. At first, she thought that they had lost the power due to the rainstorm earlier that evening, but then she saw the rose petals and flickering candlelight.
She walked in to find both Rowan and Connor dressed in suits. She looked down at Blue, who had a pink dress on. She couldn’t stop the laughter then.
This meant that Rowan had taken Connor and Blue clothes shopping.
She smiled at how handsome they all were.
“What’s all this about?” She set her purse down on the table and followed the rose petals down the hallway.
There, in the dining room, the table was all made up and a wonderful meal was set out under the candlelight.
“We made you dinner.” Connor smiled and then gave an exaggerated bow. “I will be your waiter.”
Her eyebrows rose as she chuckled and looked to Rowan, who just nodded with encouragement.
“Well, then, lead the way.” She motioned.
Connor pulled out one of the chairs for her.
She sat down and laughed when her son tried to push the chair in with her on it. She scooted her chair forward as Rowan took the seat next to hers.
“You didn’t have to do all this.” She smiled. “But it smells wonderful and you two look so handsome.”
She pulled her son to her side.
“Mom,” Connor sighed, “I’m a waiter.”
“Oh, right.” She kissed the top of his head and released him.
Connor climbed up in his chair and with Rowan’s help took a bottle of champagne and poured two glasses.
Rowan took one, while Connor walked over and handed her the other.
Then the pair of them just looked at her.
“To our family,” Rowan said, holding his glass up.
She toasted and started to take a sip. That was when she noticed the ring in the glass. Her hand stilled as she blinked at the bottom of the bubbly for a moment.
Then her eyes moved to Rowan’s. “It was the kid’s idea.” He motioned to Connor. “I wanted to ask you days ago, but…”
“It’s supposed to happen like this,” Connor chimed in. “Like the movie.”
Kayla reached in and took the ring. Rowan handed her a napkin so she could dry it off. “Yes, just like the movies.” She turned to her men.
“Now,” Connor tugged on Rowan’s sleeve.
“Right.” Rowan cleared his throat and moved down to kneel beside her.
“Take her hand,” Connor hinted.
Rowan complied. “Think I can do this part by myself?” he asked her son.
Connor nodded. “Don’t mess it up.”
Rowan smiled, then took Kayla’s hand to his lips.
“Kayla and Connor, the day you two came into my life, I knew it would never be the same again. I would never be the same again, nor did I want to be. You’ve both given me something I never thought I’d have, something I never thought I deserved. A family of my own. I can’t imagine a day without either of you in it. I love you both with all of my heart and want to spend the rest of my life showing you that love. Make us a family for real, forever. Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” she blurted out as he slid the ring on her finger.
Rowan leaned in and hugged her, then gathered Connor up and put him between their bodies.
“I love you, Mommy and Daddy.” Kayla’s heart soared as tears rolled down her face. She knew at that moment that no matter what mistakes she made in the future, whatever came her way, she would be able to deal with it as long as she had her men by her side.
