Breaking The Darkness (The Light and Dark Trilogy Book 1)

A musky cologne fills my nostrils, and I wipe the remaining tears from my face.
"Hart, I..."
"What were you arguing with him about?"
"Baby, I'm not..."
"Don't call me baby! I'm not yours anymore! At least not until you decide to grow up, be a man and stop hurting me!" I get up from the ground and take several steps away from him.
Hurt flashes across his face, before he takes a deep breath and runs his fingers through his hair. "I was pushing for him to reveal himself to you. He's been hiding about for years, and I figured now you needed him more than ever."
I narrow my eyes, "Just like I needed you? So you mean to tell me, that the whole time we've known each other you knew my brother was alive?"
His eyes widen, and he nods in defeat. And the hurt continues.
I shake my head and walk around him. Tingles settle on my spine as he grabs me from behind. His arms wind around my waist, making it impossible to breathe, or to think.
A delicious shiver rushes through me as his breath caresses my skin. "Baby, I need you to be reasonable. I thought I was doing what was best for you...I thought..." He places a small kiss to my neck. One after another, his lips trail up and down. He spins me around, and pushes me up against the nearest wall. His icy blue eyes darken, as he moves in closer. His forehead touches mine, and his arms lift so that they are on either side of my face, blocking me in.
I close my eyes and put my hands on his chest. He pushes against me, bringing himself even closer.
"Hart," he whispers against my lips. A hand lifts my chin up, bringing my lips flush with his own. He slides one hand under my leg, hitching it around him, while he moves the other around my waist.
Must.Stop.Kissing.Him.
All I have to do is push him away and we will be done. But do I really want that?
His fingers massage up my back from my waist, igniting a trail of desire before burying themselves in my hair. His thumb firmly strokes my jaw, deepening our kiss while anchoring me to him.
"Well, well, well. Isn't this quite the show?"
We break apart and look towards the voice that interrupted us. There in all of his glory, staring back at us with malice in his depths, is none other than Vyrix.
Trace reacts instantly and pushes me behind him.
"Hello, nephilim. It's been awhile. I've heard you've been looking for me." Trace's posture goes from relaxed to rigid.
"What do you want?"
"Hmm, I would deem it to be quite obvious why I'm here." His blood red eyes narrow in on me, "It's time to collect."
"Fuck you!" Trace spat out.
"Tsk, tsk, young one. It's best to not anger me and give me what I want." His bony finger points at me, and then waves me over. "Come, my sweet, I have a lot planned for us."
I stand firmly locked in place, eyes set on the creature before me. "No."
His aura darkens even more. "Come again?"
"I said no." My tone comes out calm, and firm.
He raises his fingers and in one quick snap, several demons are surrounding us. "Such a pity. It would have been much easier if you were to come with me willingly, but I guess I will have to force you into surrendering. This should be quite easy, seeing as how you've had no training as of yet. I'm just going to stand back and watch you fight for your lives. I take such pleasure in watching you suffer." He gives us an evil grin before he vanishes.
Something cool slips into my hand, and I notice I am now holding a metal knife. "Hartley, I need you to listen very carefully. When killing a demon, you need to slit their throat. Don't hesitate. These creatures don't have a soul. When they die, no one will miss them. Kill them all."
I nod and back away from Trace. A small demon makes his way towards me, fangs digging into his red lips, short arms and short legs make him wobble his way over. Maybe this won't be as bad as I thought.
I charge for it and get caught off guard by something tugging me back by my hair. I look up and see red eyes gazing into my own. Another demon has climbed onto my back, making it harder to maneuver. He digs his thick nails into my scalp, making me scream bloody murder. Pain emerges and blood runs down my head. I take the knife and plunge it into the demons neck, swiftly taking it off my back, and slitting its throat in the process.
Several demons come for me, making it impossible to catch my breath.
"Damn sis, why are you having all the fun without me?" Alec's voice catches me off guard, and the demon tackles me to the ground.
"Oh, shit!"
The demon puts his hands around my neck, suffocating me. Black spots invade my vision, and the demon's grasp tightens, making it even more difficult to breathe. My eyes slowly drift shut until, the demon is pulled off of me in one swift motion.
Alec leans over me, his grey eyes staring into my own. He reaches out a hand for me to grab, and I take it without a second thought.
"What are you doing here?" I ask slightly out of breath.
"Well I had a bad feeling that you were in trouble, so I grabbed Cole from class and we found you out here."
I look around and see Trace and Cole fighting off a group of demons, and somehow, their parents are in the battle as well.
I shake my head and look back at my brother. "You ready to kick some ass sis?" I nod and we go our separate ways.
Demon after demon we slash through until a pain rushes through my abdomen. I look down and see a giant knife sticking out. A violent chill settles down my spine, as bony fingers pulls the knife out, and then wrap around my waist.
"Did you honestly think you could beat me with no training? You’re weak. An amateur. But, with the proper training, you will be quite exquisite my dear." He turns me around to face him and caresses my cheek. He puts one finger to my temple, and I can feel the magic breaking through my barrier. "Enough with the games, my sweet. You are coming with me. No more are you a savior, no more are you the chosen one. No, now you are my slave. You will love no other, you will have no family. You will reign forever as the Dark Queen." He drops me to the ground, as if I were a feather, weightless and useless.
Pain rips through my body as I lay back flat on the ground.
This is it.
The end of my legacy.
The one who was supposed to free everyone captured by darkness.
The one who was supposed to bring the light back into the world.
My parents always told me I would be special - that one day, I would be great. One day, I would save the world.
But instead, I am descending into the darkness watching the light slowly fade away.
Glowing red eyes stare at me in victory, taunting me for the failure I have become.
Sometimes, good doesn't succeed.
Sometimes, it's evil that prevails.
"No! No, no, no." That beautiful voice I love rushes over to me.
He bends down in front of me, and puts my head on his lap. His hands caresses my face, as he looks at the gaping hole in my stomach.
"Baby, please. You promised you would never leave. Please...don't do this to me." Tears fall from his eyes, and onto my face.
I look into his beautiful eyes, and bring his face down to mine. Our salty tears mesh together, as our lips become one.
He breaks away from me. "No, you need to save your breath. We need to do something." He looks away from me and yells at someone behind him, "Get some help!"
Exhaustion seeps in, drowning out the remaining fight I had left.
I'm leaving him behind.
I'm leaving behind everyone I've ever loved, so that they can live a life full of joy and peace.
"Trace..." My lips are chapped and I'm struggling to stay awake.
His eyes meet mine for the last time, and I whisper the words "I love you" before I succumb to the darkness.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Is this what it feels like to die?
No pain.
No fear.
I guess in a way he got his wish.
I'm out
of the way.
Effortlessly fading away into the darkness.
Is this how my story ends?
The almighty chosen one, who was supposed to fight the dark side, has now become the dark one.
This was his plan all along.
To take my pain, my fear, my broken self, and make me into something that people will fear.
Everyone I've ever loved is now rotting away in a world full of darkness.
I'm no savior!
I'm evil!
All I've ever done is create pain!
As I sit in front of the mirror, red lipstick, black dress, crown on my head, this is not who I want to be.
I don't want to be the Dark Queen!
I don't want to be ruler of all evil!
And I sure as hell do not want to be tied to the demon who created this mess!
No, I will play along.
I will show everyone how strong I am.
I will defeat Vyrix once and for all.
A knock on the door breaks me from my trance. I get up slowly from my seat, and make my way towards the door.
Blood red walls stain the room. Black stands that hold three candles each, light up the room. Fear encompasses me the closer I get to the door.
When I get there, I open it and am met with the blood red eyes I have feared for years.
He bows in front of me, and then walks past me and into the room. "I take it you have found everything to your liking?"
I nod and close the door behind me.
"What's the matter, my sweet? Are you not happy? I assumed with everything that happened between you and the nephilim, you would be pleased to live in another world." He turns around and sets those creepy eyes back onto mine, then looks away and roams his eyes up and down my body.
A shiver of disgust runs down my spine, and I back away a bit further. "Are you appalled by my appearance? Surely you’re not one of those women who only like men for their looks?"
"No...no it's not that. You’re just the son of a bitch that took everything from me!" Anger radiates throughout my body. The demon, I've so desperately tried to keep hidden breaks her way through.
He waves his bony finger in the air. "Ah, ah, ah. Let's not be too hasty. You knew from day one that I would sooner or later get my hands on you. It was only a matter of time. Yes I'll admit, I did cause quite the struggle for you, but in the end it only made you stronger. I will not have a weak Queen standing by my side! Instead I had to break you, make you feel alone in the world, so when the time came you would come willingly."
I shake my head in disgust.
"Hmm, I see. I guess this won't be as easy as I thought. Maybe it's time to show you who I really am. Maybe then, you won't cower in fear every time we are alone. After all, you have known me your whole life."
Confusion seeps in, and my eyes widen as the blood red eyes fade away and turn into the brown eyes of someone I thought I trusted.
Cole.
Standing before me in all of his glory, is someone I considered a friend.
How could he do this?
What kind of sick, creature does this to people?
How could he do this to me? To his parents? To Trace?
"I see your pretty little head is twisting and turning with several thoughts. So let me clarify some things for you. When we first found out about going to protect the royal family, I got this bright idea in my head.
I could steal the throne!
It was rather brilliant really, my parents were too caught up in trying to protect the royal family, that they ever paid attention to me or Trace. But when your parents gave birth to a baby girl, I knew this would be the easiest way to get the throne.
Trace was so attached to you that he didn't care about his little brother. At first, I couldn't understand his random attachment to you, until I noticed your beauty. I knew, that if I didn't do something, you both would fall in love instantly, and I'd be thrown to the wolves."
"You’re a sick son of a bitch!"
He chuckles darkly, running his hands through his dirty blonde hair. "Really? Here I thought I was just taking what's rightfully mine! If it weren't for that stupid prophecy, you would have been mine in the first place! But my stupid brother had to come in with his dark demeanor and steal you away!"
He shakes his head and makes his way towards me. I back up until I hit the wall. When he reaches me, he puts an arm above my head and looks into my eyes. He takes his other hand and raises it to my cheek slowly caressing it. Tingles spread through my body, but not in pleasure. Instead, of pleasing me with his touch like Trace does, all Cole's touch does is make me feel empty and disgusted.
"Don't worry my sweet, soon you will be bound to me. Soon, you will understand why I did what I did. Soon, you will be mine." He slowly backs away from me, walks out the door and slams it shut behind him.
Tears stream down my cheeks, as I slide down the door, wallowing in what could've been.
Trace.
A family.
I am no longer the chosen one.
Now, I am the Dark Queen.
I will be forced into a world with no light, only darkness.
I will be forced to love someone I don't love.
And I will be forced to watch my people, succumb to the forces of darkness.
This is not the end, for it is only the beginning.
I will get my revenge!
THE END!
