Darby's Angel

Page 24

by Marcy Stewart

A tow-haired bundle of pumping arms and legs came into sight and launched into his arms. Simon groaned and snuggled his cheek against his son’s neck, sniffing the sweet scent of him, the little-boy smell of earth and green growing things.

“What are you doing out here all alone, sprite?”

“Looking for you. Mamma wants to know if you’re gonna eat supper with us or go back on the airplane.”

Simon drew back and stared into the greenest, brightest eyes in the world. “I’m not going anywhere. Not unless you and your mom go with me.”

Tay’s face nearly split with his grin. “Then you’re not mad at her no more?”

Clutching his son to him fiercely, Simon closed his eyes and rocked him from side to side. Almost. He had almost missed this. He didn’t need a lifetime to learn.

“No more, sweetheart, no more. Let’s go home.”
