“I can do it. If I can get a bit of help on it? That means not lying to me, even if you can. Like that stuff with Faith… What was up with that?”
The woman kept running, glancing over at him after a moment. Then she cleared her throat.
“I’d thought that we might be able to save her. It’s one of the problems of being a good person. You have to try and save the innocent ones. It’s why I’ve been working to get you on my side the whole time, Connor. You aren’t guilty. Not yet. We can still save you.”
That, he had to figure, might not be true.
It was worth trying for though. As they kept running, going slowly so Bertie could keep up, he took her hand and held it.
Even if he failed, he was finally getting a chance to escape from his past.
A thing that he hadn’t thought would happen without dying first.
“Thanks. For trying. I’ll do the same.”
A thing that would require him to change everything he was. A thing that he was more than willing to do.
