Winners receive a two-month residency at Grez-sur-Loing, Fontainbleu, France, where

Stevenson first met his wife Fanny Osborne, funded by the Scottish Arts Council and the National Library of Scotland. Applicants must be writers living in Scotland, or be Scottish by birth. Submit no more than 3,000 words of original work (in progress or recently published), along with a brief statement of how the fellowship would be useful, and a short career history.

The Royal Literary Fund has been continuously helping authors since it was set up in 1790. It is funded by bequests and donations from writers who wish to help other writers. Its committee members come from all walks of literary life and include novelists, biographers, poets, publishers, lawyers and agents. Help is given to writers in many different situations, where personal or professional setbacks have resulted in loss of income. Grants cannot be made for works in progress. Pensions are considered for older writers who have seen their earnings decrease. To apply, contact Eileen Gunn providing a list of your work, including names of publishers, dates, and whether sole author. Of special interest to all involved in writing in higher education is Writing Matters, the RLF report on student writing in higher education. It examines the difficulties many students face in writing effectively, and proposes a range of measures to address these. The report argues that much greater attention should be paid to helping students adjust to the demands of writing at university, and that writing development is a key factor for progress in the higher education sector.
