“I was certain your kiss was going to be rough and it’d convince me I’d made a mistake. I was going to send you packing. You were so gentle, though, teasing my lips and making me want more.”

He moved away from her legs and gazed up at her.

“I’m hurting, Greg. You made me ache for you that night, and I need you to make me want that again.”

He stood up and reached out a hand to her. “How did it go?” She took his hand and stood.

Greg stood before her looking down at those lips and then back up to her eyes.

“Do you remember how you chose how fast we went back then? You made the choices, and it will be the same now.”

She touched his lips with her fingers, running them from one end to the other. She went up on tiptoe and kissed his lips with a peck. He gently brushed them with his own, planting small kisses across her top lip and then the lower one. His tongue licked around her lips and then entered her mouth. He could always get lost in her mouth. Tongues touched and played a game with each other. She didn’t move away as their passion increased and he pressed his lips firmly against hers.

Before this went any further, there was something else he needed to do. He pulled away and she still leaned into him.

“Beth, I wanted to ask you something before you decide to go any further.”

“What?” She’d seemed relaxed a moment ago, but now she bit her bottom lip.

It was corny, but he would do this the old-fashioned way. He got down on one knee and gazed up. Her hand went to her mouth as tears came to her eyes.

“I know you deserve better than me and I’ve fairly messed up your life, but I want you to be my wife. I want you to be Mrs. Barnes and for Josh to have my name. I asked the kids, and they’re okay with it if you are.” He pulled the ring Trudy had given him out from his pocket. It was one of a couple their grandmother had given to Trudy, white gold with a row of tiny diamonds.

She wasn’t answering. She just stared at the ring, and the minutes felt like hours.

“Yes.” Beth held out her hand as he put the ring on her finger. She flung her arms around his neck and kissed him. She kissed him some more and he held her face in his hands as he discovered every corner of her mouth. Eventually, he moved away from her.

“If I remember right, you undid my buttons,” Greg said, as he smiled at her.

She took a deep breath, reached out and undid his buttons. He watched as each button came undone and she pulled his shirt from his jeans. She pushed the shirt from his arms so it fell on the floor. Her fingers lingered on the scar on his chest from the surgery. So much had happened since their first night. He pulled her t-shirt off, and she didn’t try to cover herself. Taking her hand, he walked her over to the bed.

“Beth, we’ve been through so much, but there’s one big difference about this time. I want you to touch me as much as I want to touch you. Can I undress you?” She nodded.

She lay back on the bed, and he undid the button on her jeans and pulled down the zip. Lifting her hips up, he pulled them down. He kissed her scar on her abdomen where they had removed her kidney. He trailed kisses across her tummy and then sat beside her and kissed her hand. He licked a trail up her arm until he lay next to her neck. Pulling her hair aside, he swirled his tongue just below her ear. She made a little moan.

He helped her sit up and reached around and undid her bra and slowly pulled it away from her body. He placed his hand under her breast and bent down and gently kissed her nipple, swirling his tongue around it. Then he encouraged her to lift her butt so he could remove her undies. Removing his own clothes, he laid his naked body on hers. He was determined to go slow for her. He just wanted to feel her skin next to him. She kissed him and encircled his waist with her legs so that he could enter her.

He left her lips to look into her eyes.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to push you if you’re not ready.”

“I’m scared, but I’m more scared of us not being together. We deserve this. Love me, Greg.”

He moved into her and they made love. They kissed and their hands roamed each other’s bodies as they rocked with passion. When he rolled off her, he heard Beth laugh. He leant on one arm and peered down at her.

  “What’s so funny?”

“I remembered something I brought with me. It was going to be my surprise for the night if we could go through with this,” Beth replied with a wicked grin. She grabbed her bag off the floor and started to rummage about, and finally pulled out a jar of chocolate body paint.

“Don’t ever stop surprising me, Beth,” he said and planted a big kiss on her lips.

“I don’t plan to,” she said, and kissed him back.
