As I listened to the President, I thought of Gable’s comment on the eagle, the famous predator, symbol of American freedom that swoops down on the dying and decayed.

When the room fell quiet, Wilson shook her head and sighed again.

I tried to swallow a dry lump.” Of course, I’ll do what I can to help.”

Wilson nodded her thanks as aides rolled her out of the room.

  Chapter Sixty-seven

  Monday, February 27

Natasha handed a package to Billy Joe. “Must be important. It came by express mail, and I had to sign for it.”

Billy Joe examined the brown-paper parcel before slicing into it with a jackknife.

Mama Sis and Natasha watched him withdraw two keys and a typewritten note along with a hand-drawn map locating two safe-deposit boxes. On the back of the map were instructions on how to collect the money using the enclosed keys.

Billy Joe read the note aloud: “Please accept this two-million-dollar donation for the Desire Community Center and Park in honor of Father McDade who did not contribute this money but inspired the gift...”

Natasha interrupted. “This must be a joke.”

  Billy Joe continued reading...”

Natasha interrupted again. “Is this a donation from the church?”

“The note doesn’t say exactly,” Billy Joe said. “But if it’s for real, do you realize what this means? We can build that park and youth center.”

Mama Sis swayed as if slightly dizzy. She shuffled over to Billy Joe, then spoke in a strong, clear voice. “I’s been praying and praying for the work of the Lord.”

“You sho do know how to pray, Mama,” Billy Joe said, enfolding her in his massive arms. “You sho do know how to pray.”
