“Agreed. So what was your reason?”

He sits there for a second. “I guess it all just seemed like one big popularity contest depending on how many likes it got, or if it was trending, or up-voted, or, of course, how many good reviews it got.”

“So then it was about reviews?”

He laughs slightly while staring off and shaking his head. “No, it was the job . . . I think . . . but who knows, maybe it was a combination of all the aforementioned.” He shrugs his shoulders and looks at her.

Moments later, Maggie bursts into the room, followed by everyone else who interrupt their conversation and turns on the television and navigates the channels, while the rest jump on the couch.

“Oh, come on . . . this was supposed to be an evening alone with my wife. Why are you all here?” John sits up and reaches out his arms and puts his palms up.

Maggie turns away from the TV and walks toward the couch. “The president’s about to hold a press conference . . . let’s watch.” She sits down next to Peter and they clasp hands while Kristie and Nate sit down next to them.

Nate scratches the area where the implant used to be, but Kristie quickly smacks his hand away as he purses his lips and smiles.

The news reporter announces that it’s about to begin, and the live feed switches to the presidential podium just as the president is walking up.

“Good evening, my fellow Americans. For those who don’t know me, my name is Darlene Keaner, and I am your current Commander in Chief. I will get into the state of what’s left of the Union in a moment, but first I’d like to announce that tomorrow we will officially be joining the new United Nations as an ally. In brief, it basically works on the premise of all for one and one for all, obligating all countries to have a modest military proportionate to the size of their population, that will act as the world police ensuring no illegal activity is allowed anywhere on Earth. And to ensure its validity, it will be controlled and monitored by citizens using a ‘social media’ type discussion board much like the change dot org site. It will not only connect, educate, and inform everyone, to ensure no country will ever be invaded again, but it will make sure every country is helped and taken care of, as well.

By joining, it will not only allow us to participate in certain things such as making business transactions between countries, tourism, and Olympic competition, but it will save us trillions upon trillions of dollars that can be used toward rebuilding. All of which, I believe, will be vital in rebuilding our great nation and someday restoring it to what it once was . . . a great nation full of great people. And to ensure that happens, I will also be signing into law the people’s vote as the fourth branch of government . . . giving the people’s vote just as much power as the president, Senate, or Congress. Much in the same way the president receives a bill, so will the people, with the ability to vote on it equally. And the first issue that will be up for vote will be an amendment to the constitution called the Nature Resources Act, which essentially says that it’s illegal to prohibit anything that comes from this Earth, which would include the legalization of hemp, cannabis, and psilocybin mushrooms, to name a few. It will also include an Environmental Protection amendment prohibiting all fossil fuels, even though, we believe, oil no longer exists. It will focus on alternative energy like solar, wind, bioenergy, and, above all, Industrial Hemp. Hemp that’s converted into fuels such as biomass energy in conjunction with something that’s called Axle-Alternator Technology, all of which will be used to convert our cars and enable this country to finally achieve energy independence.”

She smiles and then takes a sip of water, followed by a deep breath.

“My fellow Americans, along with everyone else out there in the world watching this right now, I invite you to join us, every living soul on this planet, in taking these steps right now, which are just a few of the many that are needed to be taken by each and every one of us, on top of something that must . . . has to be done, and that’s to start making a conscious effort of doing what’s right in everything we do, and not what’s wrong. Because the actions we take in our lives, we now know, have definite consequences, so those times of sin must come to an end. It is imperative for the survival of not just our country, but the entire human race that inhabits this planet.” She pauses for a moment and looks down, but then right back up and straight into the camera. “People, it will take some time to get right, and adjustments will, of course, need to be made. But if we work together instead of fighting, in conjunction with the will of the people and those in power to do what’s right, along with the help and guidance from our friends, the Enocks, in the process of identification and deportation of all Opocks throughout the globe . . . all that, will, in time, get us back to what this country, and world, were meant to be . . . a country that’s not only for the people . . . but truly by the people.”

As the president continues, Ena leans down next to John and whispers in his ear, “I stand corrected; there might just be hope for this world after all.”
