Habeas Corpus: Black Womb (Black Womb Collection Book 1)

“Oh, yeah,” Xander nodded, the smile fading from his lips. “If your word and the stunt he pulled at the memorial weren’t enough, his Dad found a bunch of souvenirs and a living person in his basement. You don’t get much more clear-cut than that.”
“Good, good,” Genblade nodded honestly, pursing his lips. “One thing I never did know: did he ever give up why he did it?”
Xander shifted again, visibly uncomfortable. “He told some prison shrink that he did it for his Dad. That he wanted him to have something worthwhile to report on in this worthless little town so that maybe they could make it big and get out.”
“You don’t believe him?”
Xander paused, dwelling on the question a moment. “I don’t think there was a reason. I think expecting reason out of someone that far gone is like expecting blood from a stone. It’s just not going to happen.”
“Now you’re learning,” Genblade smirked, waving a finger at him.
Xander nodded, his lips locked tightly.
After a moment of silence, Genblade squirmed a little in his chains, leaning in a little closer to the glass to squint at his visitor. “Why’re you here, Xander?”
Xander chuckled, shrugging a little. “Partly because I wanted to look you in the eye one last time before they put you away for... what was it again?”
“Twelve consecutive life sentences,” he laughed.
“Twelve consecutive life sentences,” Xander repeated, unable to hide his grin.
“They say with good behaviour, I’ll be out in ten.”
Xander raised an eyebrow. “You have any intention of behaving?”
Genblade snorted. “Nope.”
Xander laughed as well, then started to get up.
“And the other reason?” Genblade perked, throwing his enemy a grin.
“Wanted to let you know something. Something important,” Xander admitted, grabbing his coat off the back of his chair.
“What’s that?”
He leaned in close to the glass, a wry smile on his lips. “It’s not over.”
Xander hung up the phone and turned to leave without another word, not even bothering to see Genblade’s reaction.
Genblade smirked as he watched Xander leave the building, the large metal doors lock shut behind him. “Round two to you, Womb,” he chuckled to himself, placing the phone gently back onto its receiver.
On the roof of the police station, Xander looked out upon his city.
Megan says I have to think positive. That I shouldn’t have regrets.
He took in a deep breath, then let out a sigh.
“If you’re innocent, you’re hurt, or you’re scared... I’ll be there.”
Xander smiled. For the first time in months, he didn’t regret saying those words. He felt good about them. Thank you, Megan.
“I love you, Sara,” he said, bringing out his knife and slicing his hand to trigger the transformation. “The fights just beginning, and I’m not giving up.”
“Black Womb lives.”
