Loving Mum. This was said to be Diana’s favourite picture of herself with her youngest son. It was taken in Majorca during a royal holiday.

Just one of the boys. Harry arrives for a school carol concert at St Matthew’s church in London.

New beginnings. Just ahead of his third birthday, Harry pauses for the photographers as he arrives at nursery school, complete with Thomas the Tank Engine school bag.

Mum with ‘Uncle Ken’. Inspector Ken Wharfe looked after Harry and William before becoming Diana’s personal protection officer.

Starting early. At the tender age of ten Harry undertook his first public engagement, saluting officers parading at the 50th anniversary of VJ Day in London.

Favourite nanny. Harry films a happy Tiggy Legge-Bourke at Cirencester Park Polo Club.

All is well. Diana took Harry and William to the Thorpe Park amusement centre, having invited photographers to show they were the survivors of her failed marriage.

The saddest day. Flanked by his father, Prince Charles, and uncle, Earl Spencer, Harry walks behind his mother’s funeral cortège.

Shape of things to come. Harry gets his first ride in a tank during a visit to the barracks of the Light Dragoons in Hanover.

Comrade-in-arms. Harry with Lt Col Bill Connor, the American officer who befriended him and witnessed his bravery on his first tour of Afghanistan.

Love in progress. A proud Harry strolls with Chelsy Davy after receiving his helicopter pilot’s wings from his father.
