He waited a full day before seeking out the doctor again, hoping against reason that she’d just forget about his outburst and he wouldn’t get the sympathetic look he was getting now. She didn’t say anything, as he was obviously avoiding the issue, but the desire was plain in her turned down lips, the slight furrow of her brow.
Was giving the CD he'd made of Charon's file to the doctor really a good idea? There was a risk that she would give the information to the head researcher during the experiments, Dr. Arliss. Mr. Gideon was already trying to repeat the experiments, if the gasoline in Ted’s food was any indication, and Hugo had never met Dr. Arliss, so he didn’t know how dedicated he was to the lost research. Dr. McFadden would do the right thing. He held the CD out to her, "I got some more information for you."
“Hugo…” she took a step towards him, accepting the CD, but made no further moves. He decided to ignore it.
“Everything is on there. I hope it can help Ted.”
The doctor nodded, “I think it will. I’m already making progress with him. Dr. Arliss is back from vacation, and he’s been helping me. We’re trying a few things, and it seems like we might be getting Ted’s abilities under control, but it’s still too early to say for certain yet.”
Hugo smiled slightly, sticking his hands in his pockets, “That’s good.” An awkward silence settled in the room and he shifted his weight, his attention drifting away from the doctor. “Ok. I’ll talk to you later. Bye.”
“Yes, ok,” she said, a tinge of disappointment in her voice. Hugo left before she could get up the nerve to ask him how he was feeling.
Outside of the medical wing he slowed his pace down, carefully staring at the ground and the other pairs of shoes that passed by him. Now what? Despite an overwhelming amount of information, he didn’t feel like he was any closer to finding out why Mr. Gideon was the cause of Seattle going up in a mushroom cloud. He was beginning to have doubts that he’d survive long enough to find out. He didn’t think Mr. Hansen was in on the continued experimentation, because he wouldn’t have allowed Hugo to do the investigation if he was, but he still didn’t know if it was safe to tell the man everything he’d found out because of his relationship with Mr. Gideon. Hugo wanted to tell him though. He wanted to tell him his brother might still be alive. But for that he needed proof first.
Mr. Hansen was giving him access to incredibly sensitive information, would he let him live if he found out that Hugo’s investigation wasn’t in the company’s best interests? He shook his head and then had to brush his white hair out of his eyes. Mr. Hansen wanted to know what was going on as badly as he did, he just didn’t want to damage his friendship with Mr. Gideon in the process. He would wait till he had more information so Mr. Hansen wouldn’t have to ask the questions he was afraid to ask.
He’d already spoken to Mr. Hansen about his conversation with Charon and the man had confirmed what Charon had said about killing Mr. Gideon. Hugo wasn’t ready to ask why they’d let Charon live when the others had died. Then he’d asked him about Madeline.
She had predicted the second experiment’s, Apollo’s, car crash. It had been the prediction that had gotten her labeled as a fraud by Mr. Gideon. He’d been the one driving the car in the vision, and Mr. Gideon didn’t drive cars.
Reluctantly Mr. Hansen gave Hugo her current address in southern Los Angeles. Hugo planned on seeing her over the weekend. The last minute tickets for the flight were a little expensive, but he was getting paid pretty well to…do whatever he was doing.
