Kelly was immediately indignant. “You’re surely not waiting a year to marry, are you?”
Pierce glanced at the woman in his arms, the woman he’d loved from the moment they’d met. “No, we’re surely not,” he said and kissed her, briefly but with feeling.
“Good. I’ll call Mom and tell her, although she won’t be surprised.”
“Is she psychic?” he asked, mildly curious. Actually he was much more interested in exploring the smoldering passion he could see in Chelsea’s eyes.
“I guess. She said last night that it wouldn’t be long before you two woke up. She wants all her grandchildren to be legitimate. Are you two expecting?”
A faint flush hit his face as he realized everyone in his family seemed to know about him and Chelsea. With a laugh he relaxed and confessed all. “We think so.”
He felt Chelsea’s laughter as he waited out another series of shrieks. A smile tugged at his lips. “Come over for dinner. You and Chelsea can discuss symptoms then. In the meantime, don’t call us—we’ll call you.” He hung up.
Chelsea gazed into his eyes. Little tremors began to stir deep inside her. “You’re injured,” she reminded him.
“Deep breathing is good for clearing the lungs,” he told her. He found the spot on her neck where she liked to be kissed and proceeded to do so.
“You’re not to strain—”
“I won’t,” he interrupted her protest. He stroked the smooth skin under her knit top until he had to have more. Cupping her breast, he murmured, “You can do all the work this time,” he told her.
Chelsea relaxed. “Okay, this is Anatomy 101,” she teased softly, pushing him into a reclining position.
He pulled her head down to steal a kiss. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you,” she replied, and remembered something one of her professors had said a long time ago when she was starting her medical training.
“Love,” her professor had said, “is the best medicine of all.”
It was. It truly was.
